Background / History
Madison played alongside Gavin King on the Dallas Cowboys’ offensive line for four years. At 207 centimeters tall and approximately 310 pounds, he was a formidable professional athlete whose size made him especially difficult to outfit after the apocalypse. He previously played through a serious leg injury after a cortisone injection during the 2011 Super Bowl final; the resulting post-season trade turmoil contributed to his resentment toward the Cowboys’ owner. 2 4 6 7
He grew up in Chicago and is married with six children—four sons and two daughters. When the outbreak began, he unsuccessfully tried to contact his family and later struggled with guilt over not returning to look for them. 4 8 30 179
Madison reached Gavin’s room while fleeing zombified teammates during the initial outbreak. Panicked and initially unable to accept the situation, he nevertheless chose to scavenge alongside Gavin, armed himself with a military knife, and pledged to protect his quarterback as he had on the field. 2 3
Appearance
Madison is an exceptionally large Black man with the build of a professional lineman. His height, heavy musculature, and unusually large feet make him conspicuous among both survivors and zombies. 2 7 341
- Stands 207 cm tall and weighs roughly 310 pounds. 2
- Has feet too large for ordinary stores to reliably stock shoes in his size. 7
- Later loses weight and muscle mass because the apocalypse disrupts his former training, supplements, and diet. 182
- Often reinforces his limbs with improvised cowhide protection during field operations. 115
Personality
Madison begins the apocalypse terrified, excitable, and prone to panic, but he gradually becomes steadier under pressure. He draws confidence from his football partnership with Gavin, repeatedly framing their survival as a continuation of their quarterback–lineman relationship. 3 9 102
He is loyal, dutiful, and protective, though he often defers too readily to Gavin rather than voicing his own judgment. His humor is crude and impulsive, particularly around women and during banter with Eugene, but he can show genuine care for children, teammates, and vulnerable survivors. 21 72 133 182
Madison also has a persistent interest in the possibility of intelligent zombies and questions Gavin’s theories when he believes the group may be overlooking a threat. 113 114
Abilities & Skills
Physical Strength
Madison’s size and athletic conditioning give him exceptional raw strength and close-range stopping power.
- Kicks down doors during house-clearing operations. 104
- Can pin or restrain other adults with little difficulty. 147
- Forces zombies back out of a vehicle through sheer strength while under siege. 112
- His weight class is so overwhelming that even Edward is at a major disadvantage against him in an unarmed match. 341
- His conditioning has declined without his former training regimen and supplements. 182
Firearms and Close-Quarters Combat
Madison develops into a dependable field fighter, particularly with shotguns, though he is not considered among the camp’s most technically skilled armed combatants. 57 125
- Uses military knives, a Viking battle axe, revolvers, and several types of shotguns. 3 53 57 70
- Clears dormitories with Gavin, killing zombies methodically despite visible tension. 57
- Uses a drum-fed shotgun to hold back large zombie groups during the Richard Town escape. 112
- Breaches a terminal door under fire during the Silver City operation. 340
- Gavin rates Madison’s knife and dagger proficiency below the camp’s stronger armed fighters. 125
Driving
Madison is an aggressive and highly capable driver of his modified Dodge Ram TRX, which he nicknames the “Tyrannosaurus.”
- Drives at extreme speed while pursuing the RV and Ford, reaching approximately 150 mph. 17
- Performs high-speed turns and drifts while navigating zombie-infested roads. 17
- Later drives convoy vehicles during field operations. 114 329
Camp Organization and Training
Although he usually follows Gavin’s lead, Madison can take charge when needed.
- Organizes field, internal, and logistics personnel during a manor emergency. 165
- Helps distribute firearms and ammunition, including handguns for women and children and a Benelli M4 for Old Robert. 73
- Trains Winnie at the firing range and supervises her first attempts with a precision rifle. 182
