Watching Father Hogan and the severely wounded man, Gavin couldn't help swallowing, his Adam's apple bobbing.
After a brief daze, Gavin didn't enter the room. Instead, he stood silently in the doorway, waiting for the interaction between the priest and the wounded man to fully conclude.
It took quite a while. Father Hogan and the wounded man talked for a full seven or eight minutes before the priest gripped the wounded man's only remaining left hand and rose from the edge of the bed.
Seeing that, Gavin snapped out of it, stepped into the ward, and strode to the bedside.
Hearing the footsteps, the two men immersed in conversation turned their heads at the same time.
Father Hogan was startled when he saw Gavin, while the severely wounded man instinctively groaned as he turned, then drew a deep breath as though the pain had been stirred up.
At the same time, the priest asked Gavin softly.
"Your Majesty, so it was you. I noticed someone waiting outside the door several minutes ago."
"Please forgive me for thinking it was another wounded man waiting for confession. I never imagined it would be you, Your Majesty."
With that, Father Hogan gave Gavin an apologetic smile.
Facing Father Hogan's apology, Gavin took a deep breath, then shook his head.
"There's nothing to apologize for, Father. Waiting was my decision, my choice. It has nothing to do with you."
With that, Gavin lowered his head and looked at the figure lying on the bed.
The man looked utterly miserable. Not only was he covered in all kinds of monitoring equipment, but his body's current condition alone had already exceeded the limits of what an ordinary person could endure.
