Snap!
Madison slapped a hand against his own face.
Being shown up by Eugene like that felt worse than death.
Why hadn't he learned any skills related to cars back in the day!
For a moment, Madison actually regretted becoming famous so early.
His large frame had already stood out in high school, catching the eyes of many college scouts.
And it wasn't just football scouts; there were even more basketball scouts interested in him!
In short, becoming famous too early was a mistake; it made his time on the streets feel like a complete waste. Fuck...
Cursing inwardly, Madison pursed his lips and stepped aside to let Eugene pass, watching him head toward the front of the Tyrannosaurus.
Seeing Eugene snatch the repair job, William remained silent for a moment before he couldn't help but glance at the two corpses in the distance, then stumbled toward them.
Gavin focused on William's feet and chuckled softly.
"Little cop, your feet look a bit better."
"Better my ass, he's just showing off!"
Eugene leaned over the engine bay, peering at the engine while responding to Gavin.
"His foot isn't broken, but it's a severe contusion. I saw plenty of those in the service."
"Don't look at him bouncing around today; once we settle down and that adrenaline wears off, if he can even stand up tomorrow, I'll call him Daddy!"
As he finished speaking, Eugene flattened himself against the still-warm engine, reaching in to extract a bullet lodged deep inside.
Gavin headed toward the RV and sat on the steps, leaning against the door to rest for a moment.
His adrenaline had spiked during the high-speed chase, and while he wasn't exactly exhausted, he felt a strange sense of emptiness in both his muscles and his mind.
Seeing Gavin sit down, Winnie, who was inside the vehicle, pursed her lips, then trotted over to her mother and whispered a few words.
In the distance, William hopped over to the McLaren and first checked its condition.
Confirming that the McLaren wasn't smoking yet and wouldn't explode anytime soon, he climbed inside to search for supplies.
Meanwhile, Madison returned to Gavin's side and leaned against the RV to ask, "Boss, why do you think that bastard driving the McLaren opened fire on us?"
"Logically, he had already broken through. With the speed of that McLaren, even if he didn't shoot at us, he could have easily left the zombies in the dust."
"But that damn son of a bitch actually opened fire. I saw the passenger side of the Tyrannosaurus get shot through... wait?"
At this point, Madison's expression went blank, and he couldn't help but glance at Eugene and ask, "Hold on, the passenger side of the Tyrannosaurus was shot through—how did Eugene survive?"
"Haha, even suicide bombers in the Middle East couldn't kill me. You think some random bastard could take me out?"
Eugene wiggled his butt at Madison while still sprawled over the engine, and Madison spat on the ground in response.
As for Gavin, he frowned and said calmly, "I never hesitate to assume the worst of human nature, so I don't find that strange at all."
"We weren't the aggressors, but who knows what was going through his head at the time."
"Maybe he and the woman in the red dress were in the middle of something, and our gunfire interrupted them, so he grew to hate us?"
"Maybe he had finally found a good hiding spot in the Rich District, but our gunfire drew the zombies in, forcing him to fight his way out, so he took his revenge on us."
"Maybe the woman in the red dress was his daughter, and he's a protective father who feared we'd catch up and force him to watch what we'd do to her?"
"Or maybe he was just born evil, and to make his own escape safer, he chose to leave us—the unknown pursuers—behind in the Rich District along with the zombies."
Having said that, Gavin grinned.
"Don't overthink the 'why.' That kind of person had to die anyway. We're alive, and he's dead—isn't that the best possible outcome?"
As he finished, he couldn't help but lick his lips.
After the high-speed chase and the shootout, he was a bit thirsty; perhaps he should grab a soda.
Just then, Winnie walked up to Gavin holding a pink cup.
"Boss, hurry and try this! My mom just brewed some coffee!"
With that, Winnie held the coffee out to Gavin.
Gavin glanced at the cup. Great, it was Hello Kitty-themed again, just like the little Luger pistol.
He narrowed his eyes suspiciously and asked, "This isn't your mom's cup, is it?"
"Of course not, it's my cup. It's super cute, right!"
Winnie held the cup out to Gavin with a sweet, adorable smile.
Seeing this, Gavin felt relieved.
It seemed this precocious brat wasn't trying to set him up with her mother.
Gavin had zero interest in a woman like Doris, who was nearing fifty; even if she wasn't quite fifty, she had to be at least forty-six or forty-seven.
Gavin had eaten too much pork in his life to be interested in that.
Taking the cup and sipping the warm coffee, Gavin looked off into the distance.
The scenery was truly beautiful.
This was the road connecting the Rich District of Coskana to the Coskana International Airport, a flat, straight stretch of nearly nine kilometers.
All that could be seen was the calm Halbert Lake on the left side of the road and the Wildlife Park on the right.
Although it was February, the pastures in the park were far from as beautiful as they were in spring or summer.
Yet, that incomparable sense of vastness still brought a comfortable smile to Gavin's face.
There were even a few Texas wolves chasing a small herd of bison across the wilderness.
How nice.
Gavin smiled even more happily.
Because those were neither zombie wolves nor zombie bison.
While Gavin was drinking his coffee, Eugene crawled out from the Tyrannosaurus engine and laughed boisterously.
"Done. The engine is perfectly fine; it's no problem once you get the foreign object out."
After saying this, Eugene leaned in next to Gavin, glanced at the coffee, and snapped at Winnie.
"Hey, kid, didn't you see I just survived a gunfight too? Why isn't there any coffee for me!"
"What are you rushing for? You'll get yours when it's ready. Can't you see I don't even have any yet!"
Madison found an opportunity to snap back at Eugene, and Eugene laughed, walking over to Madison's side and joking with him while leaning against the RV.
After the two chatted for a moment, Doris brought over more coffee, giving a cup to both Madison and Eugene.
Savoring the warm coffee, Eugene shouted from afar to William, who was checking the corpses.
"William, come over and have some coffee! Stop being the one who never gets a hot cup!"
"Alright, I'll be there soon."
William said he would be quick, and he truly was; within a minute, he returned carrying two bags of crystal meth.
Showing the meth to Gavin, William spoke up.
"Gavin, I can confirm the driver had a history of drug use. He might have just had some not long ago."
"Oh, fuck. No wonder he was like a god of war; it turns out he was a drugged-up war god..."
Gavin couldn't help but curse. He had just been pondering why a guy who was high would shoot at him—another wasted thought!
After Gavin cursed, Madison couldn't help but roll his eyes, lamenting.
"So he was a junkie. That makes perfect sense!"
He made a funny face with his large features and continued, amused.
"Who expects a guy who's high to follow the rules with you?"
"Not to mention him firing two magazines at us while he was already on the run."
"Even if he had run into the middle of the road, dropped his pants to jerk off, and had a passionate shootout with zombies at the same time, I wouldn't find it strange at all!"
"Haha..."
Madison's words drew a round of laughter, and even Winnie was laughing non-stop, her slightly chubby cheeks turning red.
Although Texas wasn't Florida, every state in America had at least a little bit of Florida in it.
Listening to everyone's laughter, William couldn't help but smile too.
But after the brief laughter, he seemed to remember something, and his eyes suddenly stung.
Suppressing his emotions, he turned around, intending to throw the crystal meth off the road.
Noticing William's movement, Gavin pondered for a moment, then suddenly raised his hand.
"Wait, don't throw it away yet!"
"What?"
Gavin's words made William turn his head in disbelief.
Holding the crystal meth in his hand, he roared at Gavin in shock.
"Holy shit, my idol, the god of cowboys, you... you don't mess with this damn stuff too, do you?"
The moment William's voice fell, everyone looked at Gavin in astonishment.
Facing their gazes, Gavin waved his hand dismissively and cursed.
"Get the hell out of here, all of you. I'm not low-level enough to rely on crystal meth for dopamine; I don't even touch weed."
"I just think that drugs like this might be useful to keep around."
"For instance, if we ever need to pry someone's mouth open in the future to get important information, but that person refuses to talk even if they die..."
"Then I think, as long as we give them a little crystal meth and keep them hooked for a while, the information we want will most likely appear~"
