In the wilderness, quite a few animal carcasses lay around a gradually rotting corpse. The place seemed to have become a small mass grave.
If someone possessed spiritual sight, they would have seen a mosaic-like mass wandering around the area in confusion. It vaguely resembled a human figure. White mist continuously seeped out from the surrounding corpses and was absorbed by the humanoid mass, making it more solid.
"Caw, caw, caw!" A flock of crows flew over from afar. Drawn by the rotten flesh below, they descended and began pecking at it.
The blurry figure stopped wandering and stared at the crows. His still-muddled mind understood that, before long, these creatures would die, and new White Qi would become available for him to absorb.
The blurry figure instinctively knew that the white aura was important, so he quietly waited for those lives to perish.
Just as the blurry figure had expected, not long after pecking at the rotten flesh, the crows suddenly let out shrill cries and collapsed to one side.
But the blurry figure waited and waited, yet no white aura rose from their corpses. Instead, a sensation appeared in his consciousness. The crows stood up again and resumed pecking at the rotten flesh.
Gradually, the blurry figure became clearer, and Wang Yuan's appearance could now vaguely be made out. He also became much more lucid.
For instance, he remembered that his name was Wang Yuan, why he was here, and what state he was currently in. He could even think normally again.
"My current state... if nothing unexpected happened, I'm a ghost." Wang Yuan readily accepted the fact that he had become a wandering spirit. Although he had remembered many things, he had also lost many things—not merely his life.
For example, he could now calmly watch the crows peck at his own corpse. Neither physically nor mentally did he feel disgusted. In the past, if he had seen so many rotting corpses, he would have run far away already.
Thirteen ignorant consciousnesses were connected to his own. They continuously transmitted cool currents of aura, and it was precisely these cool currents that had allowed Wang Yuan to regain his clarity.
Those thirteen ignorant consciousnesses belonged to the thirteen crows still pecking at his corpse. Their feathers were falling out, while black down grew back in. Their bodies also seemed to be swelling larger.
The bacteria that had killed Wang Yuan had not killed these crows. Instead, they had caused the crows to mutate and, for some unknown reason, connect to Wang Yuan's consciousness.
Through the mental connection, Wang Yuan could convey his will to the crows. However, they could only understand simple commands. He could tell them to fly onto a rock over there, but he could not order them to dance, because they had no concept of dancing.
Still, Wang Yuan was not in a hurry. He remembered reading some information about crows. On Earth, the smartest known birds were not parrots capable of mimicking speech, but crows. The childhood story The Crow Drinks Water reflected their clever thinking. Their brains were much smaller than a dog's, yet their overall intelligence was roughly comparable to that of a dog.
After some training, these Mutated Crows would surely be able to carry out more of his commands. More importantly, Wang Yuan could also view what the crows saw and heard through their mental connection.
"The most urgent matter is finding more resources." Wang Yuan's expression was grave. He could feel his Soul Body wrapped in a layer of White Qi. The White Qi protected his Soul Body, but it was being consumed every moment. Once it disappeared, his Soul Body would be completely exposed.
Although he did not know what would happen if his Soul Body were exposed, an instinctive sense of urgency told him that exposing it would be nothing good.
The problem he now faced was that this stretch of wilderness had practically become a dead zone. Other than the thirteen crows and microorganisms, there were basically no other living beings. The nearly decomposed animal corpses could no longer provide much White Qi. Once the supply of White Qi ran out, Wang Yuan would very likely disappear entirely.
"Luckily, unlike the ghosts described in those supernatural tales, I don't die upon seeing daylight. With the White Qi blocking it, I can stay in sunlight for a while. Of course, it could also be that the sunlight in this other world is different." Wang Yuan watched the setting sun dye the wasteland red and comforted himself with that thought.
"So my immediate goal is to migrate and find a place with a large concentration of living beings to replenish the White Qi being consumed. Not only do I need it, these crows need more food as well." The cool aura transmitted by the crows was even more important than the White Qi. The White Qi merely protected his Soul Body, while the cool aura strengthened it. Naturally, the amount the crows could provide each day was limited.
Afterward, Wang Yuan continued testing and gradually came to understand his current abilities. He was now in the state of a Soul Body, with neither sight nor hearing. In their place was a spherical Perception Field. Its range in the air was three meters, and within those three meters, he could see and hear everything clearly. However, once it came into contact with a solid object, its range rapidly shrank.
For example, the Perception Field could only spread about ten centimeters into the soil beneath his feet. It could reach even that far only because the soil had gaps in it. Wang Yuan had tried sensing stone, and the Perception Field could only spread one centimeter into it.
As for Wang Yuan's ability to move, even at full speed, he was only about as fast as someone taking a leisurely stroll. His mobility came from a kind of Interference Force generated by his Soul Body. It was somewhat similar to the Telekinesis he had known about before, but it was currently far too weak. Other than pushing himself forward, it could probably only make a leaf tremble. Its range of interference was exactly the same as that of the Perception Field.
"What a miserable state." Wang Yuan understood that his current condition had been caused by his own stupidity. One such lesson was enough. "What was that saying again? What doesn't destroy me only makes me stronger."
After an unknown amount of time had passed, Wang Yuan glanced over the wilderness covered in white bones. The White Qi was almost gone, while the crows' mutations had been completed. Each had grown two or three times larger. Their pitch-black feathers had grown back, and their claws and beaks reflected a cold gleam, looking exceptionally sharp.
"Then let's go. Let's find a new gathering place for life." The remnant soul drifted forward slowly, followed by the thirteen crows. The autumn wind blew through the wasteland, flattening the dead grass and partially covering the pale bones. By next year, those bones would probably nourish even more green grass.
By then, no one would know what had once happened here, while the journey of Wang Yuan, the remnant soul, was only just beginning.
