Some people grew more clear-sighted the longer they lived, able to see through all the ways of the world.

Others only grew greedier with age.

They pinned their hopes on obtaining everything.

Even after reality had knocked them down, they still greedily eyed everything within their reach, wanting to seize it all in their hands.

They were the same. They had already used most of the things capable of extending their lives and preserving their vitality, and now they could no longer keep themselves alive.

The divine kingdom was indeed alluring.

But the longer one lived, the more complicated and difficult to change one's thinking became.

Their state of faith could only barely be considered acceptable.

If they wanted to enter the divine kingdom, they could only rely on their past merits. Though entering the divine kingdom would not make them Prayer-Ascendant Angels, they would at least become Prayer-Ascendants.

As high-ranking members of The Church, they knew more or less about certain secrets of the divine kingdom.

For example, devout believers could enter the divine kingdom and become Prayer-Ascendants. Once there, those Prayer-Ascendants would gain eternal peace. They would not need to do anything every day except pray.

For devout believers, that truly was paradise. They did not need to labor or deal with all sorts of problems; it was enough to simply pray as they pleased.

But for people like them, who occupied high positions, it was torture.

They already had no need to labor. Generally, they were the ones finding fault with others, and they could command all sorts of clergy to do things for them whenever they wished.

The power, benefits, and prestige they wanted would all vanish once they entered the divine kingdom.
