Power Progression
| Stage / Realm / Level | Chapter | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Broken soul / Abyssal worm | 410, 423 | Ordinary souls with broken cores that fall into the Abyss may become worms, then develop into Lesser Demons. |
| Lesser Demon | 4, 14 | Comparable to a Black Stone Breed at its limit, but gains extraordinary traits early. Its core Abyssal authority is the Demon Contract. |
| Formal Demon | 61, 362 | Comparable to the Steel Breed. Advancement requires accumulated flesh, blood, and souls; the Will of the Abyss extracts most of this accumulation and grants a portion of its “number” back to the demon. Formal Demons wield spell-like abilities and Abyssal authorities. |
| Variant / Heterogeneous Demon | 14, 16, 410 | An exceptional demon type that can exceed ordinary demonic limits. Variant Demons may possess two or three times a normal demon’s attributes through the Expansion Effect; Heterogeneous Demons resist Abyssal “Corruption” because their soul cores remain unbroken. |
| High-ranking Demon | 405, 423, 427 | Normally equivalent to the Golden Breed. High-ranking demons undergo major stat inflation, with a typical maximum value of 1,200; Naimus reached 902 upon advancing. |
| Demon Lord | 368, 413, 642 | A high-ranking demon that occupies and rules an Abyssal layer. A lord’s territory functions as a small plane and is the basis of its virtual Divinity; outside it, a Demon Lord is generally limited to acting through projections. |
| Demon Prince | 822, 841 | A demon that has absorbed virtual power and constructed part of a soul rank with the Abyss’s fragmented numbers. Demon Princes can cross world-possibility crystal-wall systems and observe additional possibilities. |
Origin and Nature
Demons are Abyssal beings formed from damaged souls. Ordinary souls whose cores are broken may fall into the Abyss, become worms, and eventually evolve into Lesser Demons. Souls that retain unbroken cores instead become Heterogeneous Demons, anomalous beings that resist Abyssal Corruption but struggle to fully integrate with the Abyss or obtain its permissions 410 423.
A demon’s growth is tied to the Will of the Abyss. Flesh, blood, and souls provide accumulated power, but only the Will of the Abyss can convert sufficient accumulation into the numerical increase needed for advancement. The Abyss takes most of the accumulated power during this process, leaving only a portion to the advancing demon 61.
Appearance
Demons do not possess a single standard form. Their bodies vary dramatically according to type, evolution, vessel, and acquired traits.
- Some resemble the stereotypical image of a demon: muscular bodies, black scales, scarred spiraling horns, and predatory eyes 188.
- Serpentine demons may possess tails and multiple arms; one summoned demon wielded six swords with its six hands 188.
- Some demons are nearly human in appearance, with only subtle features—such as cheek scales—revealing their nature 188.
- Cambion demons commonly have red skin and horns, while incubus demons may possess bat wings and cloven hooves 400 439.
- Certain exceptional demons have non-corporeal true forms. Naimus manifests as indistinct black mist that can condense into an unclear humanoid shape 398.
Abilities & Traits
Demon Contracts
Lesser Demons can invoke the power of the Abyss through Demon Contracts, using their blood to form Demon Script and bind an agreement 4.
- Contracts can grant power, bind obligations, or establish conditions for summoning.
- Demons may conceal supplementary clauses in decorative-looking Demon Script, making contracts especially dangerous for uninformed signatories 16.
- Most demonic agreements are not inherently trustworthy; outside rare contracts that are particularly difficult to violate, demons commonly treat contracts as disposable tools 28.
- A demon with the appropriate Precepts or traits can strengthen a contract’s binding force further 1.
Possession and Vessels
Demons generally require vessels to act effectively on the Material Plane. They may possess living beings, form special bodies, or cultivate vessels capable of carrying their true-body attributes 17 194.
- Possession can leave visible or detectable demonic traces on the host 16.
- A vessel must be carefully cultivated and linked to the demon’s true body to display its full power 194.
- Destroying a vessel normally sends the demon’s true body back to the Abyss rather than killing it outright 194.
- The loss of a vessel weakens the returning demon, leaving it unable to properly exert its attributes until it replenishes itself with flesh and souls 194.
Spell-like Abilities and Abyssal Authorities
Formal Demons gain varied spell-like abilities and Abyssal authorities as part of their advancement 362.
- The Standard Demon used Control Crimson, creating crimson lances to strike multiple clergy at once 190.
- The Six-Armed Snake Demon combined illusion magic and swordsmanship into Illusory Sword Art, including the concealment technique Formless Sword 193 194.
- Pain Demons can use pain, Sacrificial Fire, and related curse spells; their high-ranking evolutionary path leads to Fear Demons 423.
- Clown Demons specialize in control and trickery, including shapeshifting, invisibility, duplication, remote summoning, forced laughter, and environmental manipulation 402.
Corruption
Demons inherently carry the destructive, chaotic power of the Abyss. High-ranking demons may possess the Power of the Abyss trait, allowing their power to corrupt targets and impose the taboo of Corruption 427.
Artificial demons formed from human desire possess thought-system power, while ordinary demons represent destruction and collapse due to their incomplete souls 540.
Soul Defense
High-ranking demons can acquire Demon Seed, an evolved form of demonic immortality that greatly reinforces the soul against equal-value damage 427.
- High-ranking demons are difficult to purify even on the Material Plane 427.
- Permanent destruction generally requires severing the demon’s return to the Abyss and overwhelming it with several Golden Breeds or a Saint-level opponent 427.
- Holy-attribute attacks are especially harmful to demons and other negative-attribute beings; a Steel Breed demon may be melted and spiritually purified if unable to return to the Abyss 355.
Demonic Types
- Lesser Demons — The most common initial demon form; examples include quasits and imps 399 423.
- Pain Demons — Curse-oriented Formal Demons that manipulate pain and Sacrificial Fire 423.
- Fear Demons — High-ranking evolutions of Pain Demons that provoke, harvest, and weaponize fear 423.
- Berserker Demons — Powerful, physically imposing demons known for immense arms and brute force 355.
- Clown Demons — Trickster demons with control-, deception-, and environment-oriented abilities 402.
- Cambion Demons — Horned demons capable of interacting with emotions and original sins to develop dream- and illusion-based powers 400 536.
- Incubi and Succubi — Demons commonly evolved from souls saturated with lust and greed; male souls tend toward incubi and female souls toward succubi 439.
- Variant Demons — Exceptional demons that surpass ordinary demonic attribute limits 14 16.
Society and Hierarchy
The Abyss is divided into layers, each with its own passages, factions, and local conditions. Information travels poorly between layers, and many layers can only be accessed through specialized methods or rituals 399 432.
Demonic society is fundamentally unstable. Demons possess no universally recognized morality or basis for trust, so factions are maintained primarily through strength rather than loyalty 28.
- Demon Lords rule individual Abyssal layers and often establish cities or towns within their territories 399.
- A lord’s territory strengthens its authority to the point that it functions as a small plane 368.
- Demon Lords are extraordinarily dangerous within their own territories, where they are effectively invincible against most opponents below Saint, Mythical Breed, or godhood 413.
- High-ranking demons commonly scheme to seize a lord’s throne, while alliances between Demon Lords are maintained through contracts filled with deliberate loopholes and mutual suspicion 405 435.
- Demon Princes stand above Demon Lords as major representatives of Abyssal power capable of intervening across world possibilities 822 932.
Material Plane Presence
The Material Plane is valuable to demons as a source of souls, flesh, faith, and potential new Abyssal territory. A small Material Plane can be dragged into the Abyss and transformed into a new layer, allowing its conqueror to become a Demon Lord 399.
Demons can enter the Material Plane through contracts, summoning rituals, possession, and specially prepared vessels 4 188 194.
- Demon Warlocks use summoning arrays and contracts to call demons and magic beasts into battle 188.
- Summoned demons may seek human souls and flesh immediately upon arrival 188.
- Long-term presence on the Material Plane creates vulnerability: a demon’s vessel can be destroyed, its aura detected, or its connection to the Abyss disrupted 16 194.
- High-ranking demons are harder to permanently eliminate because of their reinforced souls and ability to return to the Abyss 427.
