Jiraiya attended the Ninja Academy alongside Tsunade, Orochimaru, and Sosuke. He was loud, competitive, and often provoked by Orochimaru, while Tsunade frequently restrained or punished him for his antics. Despite being underestimated for his temperament, he was selected by Hiruzen Sarutobi as one of the Third Hokage’s disciples alongside Tsunade and Orochimaru. 3 5 9

During the Chunin Exams, Jiraiya displayed a far greater level of ability than his peers expected. He survived a Grass ninja’s explosive plants and Fire Style techniques, then summoned Gamaken to turn the match around. Although his combined attack with Gamaken threatened to damage the arena, Sosuke intervened to contain it. 82 83 84

Jiraiya, Tsunade, and Orochimaru later became renowned as the Konoha Sannin.
