After Dilos had talked Alec's ear off, Alec finally took his words to heart. But what mainly convinced Alec to make up his mind was the trouble that had started appearing on his body.
While they had been talking, the bruises on Alec's body had gradually begun to fade. His healing ability wasn't as outrageous as Wolverine's, but it was still pretty impressive. The problem was that, not long after he healed, strange, irregular, blood-red patterns began appearing across his body. The areas covered by them caused him excruciating pain.
At first, the pain was just stinging and aching. But as time passed, Alec felt as though every muscle, every nerve, even every cell in his body was being bitten by thousands of ants, only to be repaired again and again. For a while, the agony left him wishing he were dead, yet unable to die.

"I've gotten a rough understanding of what happened. After Clark rescued Alec when he nearly fell off the dam, he had the very bad luck to get struck by lightning. Even worse, Alec was carrying a small piece of Green Kryptonite at the time. The two interacted, and Clark's energy was transferred into Alec."
"That explains why Alec has Clark's abilities and why Blue Kryptonite can suppress them. Fortunately, I always carry lead-wrapped Blue Kryptonite with me. Otherwise,
