Even days later, the negative impact of the incident had not faded. If anything, it was drawing more and more attention. After all, the death toll was simply too high: more than ten million people had died. That would have been unimaginable in the United States of Dilos's previous life! If such a horrific loss of life had happened in America in his previous world, the whole country would have descended into chaos long ago.
America in this world hadn't reached that point, but things weren't much better. Order had only just been maintained thanks to the timely, all-out efforts of the justice system. As for why America in this world could still keep order after something like this, Dilos could only say that the two worlds differed considerably in their foundations. It wasn't just their superpowers and technology that were different; even the size of the planet differed.
As far as Dilos knew, the Earth he was on now was at least twice as large as the one in his previous life. This world's United States also had a far larger land area than the America of his previous life, so naturally its population was several times greater as well. Its manpower was likewise far greater, so it wasn't surprising that it could manage this.
Even so, the death toll was far too high. What had caused it? The collapse of America's infrastructure? Kingpin's various acts of depravity? No, that wasn't enough. There were also a series of deadly incidents caused by all kinds of opposition forces, large and small, taking advantage of the chaos... The combination of all these factors had given rise to this Day of Purgatory.
Thinking about how Gabe, Chloe, and the others had remained safe despite this horrific disaster, Dilos couldn't help feeling relieved.
