| Name | Xuan Ziwen (轩梓文) |
| Gender | Male |
| Affiliation | Sun Moon Empire; Mingde Hall, Sun Moon Imperial Soul Engineer Academy 31 35 |
| Occupation/Role | Soul engineer; one of Mingde Hall’s chief researchers, focused on civilian Soul Tool technology 35 |
| Soul Master Rank | Eight-ringed soul master 37 |
| Mentor | Kong Deming 3 31 |
| First Appearance | Mentioned as the creator of Judgment 3; first appears directly at his workbench 32 |
Background / History
Xuan Ziwen is a student of Kong Deming, the continent’s foremost soul engineer. He created the Level 4 soul-guided greatsword Judgment, which Kong Deming later gave to Xu Tianming during their soul-beast hunt 3 31.
Within Mingde Hall, Xuan Ziwen holds enough standing that Jing Hongchen cannot freely dictate his decisions. His research centers on civilian Soul Tool technology, and his philosophy differs from Jing Hongchen’s 35.
Original-Setting Trajectory
According to Xu Tianming’s recollection of the original setting, Xuan Ziwen debuted as an eighth-rank soul engineer and later independently developed the Ice Extreme War God Armor, a prototype for battle armor. Philosophical disagreements with Jing Hongchen and the appeal of the Tang Sect’s hidden weapon manual, supplied by Huo Yuhao, eventually led him to leave the Sun Moon Empire for the Tang Sect. These are remembered original-setting developments, not events already completed in the current storyline 31.
Personality
Xuan Ziwen is intensely focused on research. While engraving a Soul Tool array, he allows no outside interference; Columbina compares his concentration to Sandrone’s laboratory work 32.
He values observation and character alongside technical talent. Xiao Hongchen’s inability to identify flaws disappoints him, while the boy’s arrogance convinces him that talent alone will not carry him far. Conversely, he openly acknowledges Xu Tianming’s correct analysis despite initially doubting it 33 34 36.
His respect for established techniques does not prevent him from considering improvements. Although skeptical that a child could expose a weakness in centuries-old engraving methods, he prepares an experiment to test the claim. He is also politically cautious, choosing to summon Jing Hongchen rather than personally resolve a fight between two influential youths 36 37.
Abilities & Skills
Soul Tool Engineering
- Precision engraving: Produces Soul Tool swords and engraves their arrays by hand with a carving knife 32 33.
- Subtle fault placement: Deliberately introduces errors difficult enough that even a veteran fourth-level soul engineer might miss them after watching the full process 35.
- Technical evaluation: Activates a sword’s arrays to measure their resonance delay and prepares to re-engrave its core array to test Xu Tianming’s proposed improvement 36.
Instruction and Assessment
- Designs trials to determine whether prospective students meet his standards 35.
- Uses a deliberately flawed sword to test Xiao Hongchen’s understanding of both the manufacturing process and the finished product 33 36.
- Would accept Xiao Hongchen if he identified even one or two planted errors; the boy finds none 36.
Soul Master Strength
- Possesses eight soul rings and prepares to intervene when Xiao Hongchen launches a lethal attack at Ye Guyi 37.
- His Martial Soul and individual soul skills are not identified in the supplied passages.
Equipment & Creations
- Judgment — Level 4 soul-guided greatsword forged by Xuan Ziwen, retained by Kong Deming and later given to Xu Tianming. Xuan Ziwen recognizes it during Xu Tianming’s fight with Xiao Hongchen 3 38.
- Trial Soul Tool Sword — Crafted with intentional engraving faults to assess Xiao Hongchen’s observational ability 33 35 36.
- Carving knife — Used to engrave Soul Tool arrays 32 33.
- Storage Soul Tool — Holds his carving knife after he finishes engraving 33.
- Communication Soul Tool — Used to call Jing Hongchen when the dispute at his workbench escalates into combat 37.
Relationships
- Kong Deming — Teacher. Kong Deming keeps Xuan Ziwen’s greatsword Judgment before passing it to Xu Tianming 3 38.
- Xu Tianming — Seeks to build a relationship with him and prevent his future departure from the empire. Xuan Ziwen becomes impressed by his technical observations and later suspects that he is another disciple of Kong Deming after recognizing Judgment 31 36 38.
- Jing Hongchen — Mingde Hall Master. Requests that Xuan Ziwen accept his grandchildren as personal disciples, but agrees to let their admission depend on a trial 35.
- Xiao Hongchen — Prospective personal disciple. Fails the sword-inspection test, then accuses Xuan Ziwen of staging a fraudulent assessment with Xu Tianming 35 36.
- Meng Hongchen — Prospective personal disciple who voluntarily abandons her trial early; later guides Xu Tianming to Xuan Ziwen’s workbench 31 35.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Xu Tianming’s Recruitment Objective
Xu Tianming visits Mingde Hall specifically to find Xuan Ziwen. Using his knowledge of the original setting, he hopes to establish a rapport before Huo Yuhao’s rise and retain Xuan Ziwen’s expertise within the Sun Moon Empire. Even if friendship fails, preventing his departure remains Xu Tianming’s stated bottom line 31.
The Hongchen Siblings’ Trial
Xuan Ziwen reluctantly considers taking the Hongchen siblings as personal disciples because of Jing Hongchen’s position, but insists that they pass his assessment. Meng Hongchen withdraws early. Xiao Hongchen performs well in the basic tests but declares the deliberately flawed sword “flawless,” failing the decisive inspection 33 35.
Xu Tianming interrupts with a claim that he has found three problems. Xuan Ziwen initially doubts him because he deliberately introduced only two mistakes after the boy arrived. The analysis then shifts from identifying planted faults to challenging an established engraving practice 35 36.
| Observation | Xuan Ziwen’s Response |
|---|---|
| Excess engraving force near the sword tip causes roughly a one-second activation delay. | Confirms the diagnosis and recognizes Xu Tianming’s observational ability 35 36. |
| Increasing force while engraving the hilt’s core array allegedly adds two seconds to full-array resonance. | Measures a three-second delay and prepares to test the proposed correction. The experiment is interrupted before its result is shown 36. |
The Fight at His Workbench
After Ye Guyi slaps Xiao Hongchen, the boy attacks her with lethal intent. Xuan Ziwen prepares to intervene, but Xu Tianming tells him not to risk unnecessary trouble. Recognizing the apparent imperial origin of Xu Tianming’s Radiant Sun Martial Soul, Xuan Ziwen secretly calls Jing Hongchen and leaves the impending intervention to him 36 37.
Xu Tianming’s thousand-year first ring and ten-thousand-year second ring shock Xuan Ziwen along with the other witnesses. When Judgment appears, Xuan Ziwen recognizes his own creation and reasons that Xu Tianming may share his teacher 37 38.
