"Excuse me, miss, what can I get for you?" Even though Kanna was making everyone around them uncomfortable, the restaurant owner still approached Kal'tsit with a strained smile.
"I'm terribly sorry, two of our signature dishes, please!" Kal'tsit said, gritting her teeth as she stared at Kanna.
"Of course, please wait a moment, two signature spaghetti dishes will be out shortly." The owner walked back into the restaurant with heavy steps.
"Ka~~~~~~nna~~~~~~~!!!!!" The long drawn-out tail of Kal'tsit's voice revealed that the old woman had finally lost her composure.
"Hee hee! I didn't know! It's just a few dishes, why would they react so strongly? The book even recommended them highly back then! But I really want to try that mysterious Sistag-style fruit pizza. When I was reading, it said the fruits there were big and sweet. I've never tasted them before!"
Although everything that had happened since they entered the restaurant was intentional, Kanna just wanted to see if Kal'tsit could truly remain as calm as ice, unmoved even if the sky were to fall. As it turned out, Kal'tsit was only slightly more tolerant than the average person.
Of course, she definitely wouldn't let the other party know it was intentional, so she pretended to be completely clueless. After all, ignorance is bliss.
Soon, two plates of spaghetti were served. Just as Kanna opened her mouth to speak, Kal'tsit, with lightning speed, speared some spaghetti with her fork and shoved it into Kanna's mouth.
Under the threat of Kal'tsit's "If you open your mouth again, you're dead" glare, Kanna finally suppressed her urge to court disaster. She happily hugged the bowl in front of her and began to eat with gusto.
Before leaving, Kal'tsit apologized to the owner again, then, holding Kanna's hand, walked out of the small town with a dark expression.
"You should be glad you're a child. If you were an adult, I guarantee you wouldn't have left that restaurant." Kal'tsit said urgently as they walked.
"I didn't know!"
Sensing the hint of a fishing expedition in Kal'tsit's words, Kanna continued to feign ignorance.
Kal'tsit glanced at Kanna from the corner of her eye and thought to herself, Did I really wrong Kanna? But to hit three sore spots for Siracusa people in a row... it doesn't seem like an accident.
After this incident, for the sake of her blood pressure, mental health, and to prevent the little one from causing more trouble, Kal'tsit and Kanna made a pact: Kanna was not allowed to speak casually in any situation without Kal'tsit's permission.
If Kal'tsit sent her a message indicating a wrong answer, she had to immediately shut up and let Kal'tsit handle it.
If Kanna broke this agreement, she would have to recite the entire text of the day's lesson from memory and be quizzed by Kal'tsit on local history.
Chapter 98, Chapter Ninety-Two: Dog Egg, What Price
Perhaps knowing she had angered Kal'tsit quite a bit last time, Kanna behaved like a good child for the next few days. Just as they were about to enter Laterano, news arrived from Rhodes Island: the investigation team had reached Rhodes Island.
"By the way, are you really that confident leaving Rhodes Island to Amiya? Is it really okay for you not to be there at a time like this?" Kanna asked, holding a cup of milk tea and looking at the calm Kal'tsit beside her with some confusion.
"Remember Ascalon? She's on the island. Those investigators can only see what we allow them to see," Kal'tsit replied impassively.
"I heard before that Rhodes Island has some kind of secret, related to Amiya. What if these people try to harm Amiya?" Although this was information obtained from the game, Kanna had been wandering around Rhodes Island for a day, so it was natural to hear some unclear news while speaking vaguely.
Kal'tsit glanced at Kanna. "I didn't expect your ears to be so sharp. All SWEEP members are inside Rhodes Island, and during this time, Outcast will provide twenty-four-hour personal protection. Add to that the presence of elite Operators like Misery, Pith, and Stormeye, and I'd actually like to see them try to harm Amiya. At least that would give me enough reason to keep all these guys on Rhodes Island."
"Tsk! Does Amiya know you're using her as bait?"
"I originally planned to have Outcast receive these people, but Amiya herself proposed this idea. After discussing it, the other Operators felt there was no risk, so they reported it to me. Don't you think I'd have this much time to arrange such a detailed plan in such a short period?"
"It's all because you push Amiya every day. She just wants to contribute and make you proud."
"...I'm very sorry, but we have no choice." Kal'tsit lost the argument to Kanna once again.
"Speaking of which, Outcast mentioned something during our contact yesterday." Looking at the gloomy sky overhead, Kal'tsit thought about the message she had received regarding Kanna.
"What?"
"You can control Catastrophes?"
"Hiss! Cough, cough, cough... Are you sure Outcast's grandmother told you that?" Hearing Kal'tsit's sudden question, Kanna inhaled some milk tea into her windpipe and coughed for a few moments before finally clearing her throat. She glared at Kal'tsit indignantly.
"Alright, can you create Catastrophes?"
"Only things like thunderstorms and rain. I can't do anything else, and I can't learn it..." Fearing that Kal'tsit might suddenly make some inexplicable request, Kanna quickly replied.
"Like that time in Victoria? What about the price?"
"Price? What price? I'm not driving... Okay, there's no price. Lightning doesn't kill me anyway. It takes quite a bit of energy to trigger one, but I just start it, and the rest is up to heaven. So, later, I can even recharge a lot of energy by summoning a lightning strike." Just as she was about to joke around, she was met with a cold stare from the prescient Kal'tsit. Kanna rested her chin on her hands and said boredly.
Hearing Kanna's words, Kal'tsit fell silent again, likely plotting something.
Stopping their conversation, Kanna glanced out the window. At first, she was interested in the new scenery of Siracusa and Laterano, which was no less impressive than the wasteland. But after looking for a while, she grew weary.
She withdrew her gaze and focused on her system.
Speaking of which, this system was truly strange. Other systems either issued all sorts of life-threatening missions to announce their presence or acted like parents, nurturing the protagonist into a plump state. But her system was so laid-back that she often forgot she even had it.
The rewards for key missions were always vague, giving her no motivation to complete them. Yet, there were no punishments or restrictions, and the mission difficulty fluctuated wildly. It had even been down for a long time recently. She really didn't know what its purpose was.
If it were just based on its name, with Kanna having learned Prayer for Rain, she could claim to be the Lord of Thunder based on this skill alone.
After all, in her own opinion, even if she couldn't do anything about the Sea Creatures to the south, the Demons to the north couldn't possibly evolve so frequently like the Sea Creatures, right?
So, if she went north and created a Catastrophe zone, even if the Demons could withstand a hundred hits, could they withstand a thousand, or even Catastrophes lasting for years?
As she said herself, it didn't take much energy to trigger a Catastrophe, but replenishing it by continuously summoning lightning strikes onto herself was very fast.
So, as long as no one interfered and the consumption and replenishment were calculated properly, an endless Catastrophe zone, as long as Kanna was alive, was not a problem.
However, Ursus and Yan could still withstand the invasion of Demons for now, so she didn't need to resort to such a mutually destructive method to fight them.
At this moment, Kanna, after browsing back and forth for a long time, finally found a feedback section in a corner of the system.
This feedback section was very small and placed inconspicuously, which was why Kanna hadn't noticed it before.
Curiously, she tapped it, and a line of text popped up:
"This feedback section is used to collect system user evaluations and responses. It is the only channel for users to communicate with the system. All questions and suggestions regarding this system can be mentioned in the feedback section, and the system will respond promptly."
Kanna stared blankly after reading the message. So, this system wasn't some cold, boring machine. It could actually chat!
Kanna was no longer sleepy. Riding in the carriage all day had bored her to death.
"Hello! System Overlord, System Bro, System Your Excellency... are you there?"
"..." Three periods appeared before Kanna's eyes, signifying the system's speechlessness.
"You can clearly communicate, so why hide this interface so secretly? Are you looking down on me?" Kanna continued to huff and puff mentally.
"This system's purpose is to cultivate the host into the Thunder God of this plane. As a Sovereign, it must have independent thought. However, in previous uses, I found that a relationship that was too close to the host was not conducive to the host's development. It was highly likely to cause the host to become overly dependent on the system, thereby losing accurate judgment of themselves.
But if the system completely refrains from communicating with the host, it deviates from the system's purpose. Therefore, this system adopted a self-hiding method to sever the initial contact with the host.
However, if the host actively finds the contact point left in the system, communication can still be established."
"So, I'm not the first user? Will I encounter other system holders?"
"No, when each system holder enters a world, a new worldline will be generated from the main world, and they will be independent and never interact."
Chapter 99: Encountering the Silver Wolf
"Is that so? Then it's not interesting." Although Kanna still put on a brave face, the worry in her heart had actually subsided.
From the moment she entered this world, she had wondered if there would be other transmigrators. What would happen if they met? But after the system's answer, her long-held uncertainty finally eased.
"Speaking of which, didn't I hear that you systems have beginner's gift packages? Why didn't you give me one? And a dedicated system space?" Since it could chat, Kanna shamelessly began to try and trick her system, following the tropes of online novels.
"Your current body is the beginner's gift. Your original body turned to dust during the transmigration process. Upon arriving on Terra, only a wisp of your soul remained. I, through a colleague, copied the body of the last person you saw before you came and sent it over, then sent your soul into it.
This body is extremely powerful and fits the system's development direction very well. However, it currently seems that you have developed less than one ten-thousandth of your body's strength. If you hadn't found the contact point, you wouldn't have had the chance to contact me."
After reading this, Kanna had a look of sudden realization. No wonder she had woken up looking like Kanna. It turned out she had already died once.
Recalling the moment before her consciousness faded, the last person she saw was indeed Kanna. It seemed she had struck it rich.
"As for a dedicated space, it is not within the scope of this system's abilities. This system only provides the acquisition and usage methods for lightning-element and related auxiliary skills."
"Only lightning? What about electromagnetism? Radio waves?"
"I've reviewed your experiences. Didn't you already successfully use laser and electronic pulse abilities yourself before? Why are you asking such a question???"
The final three question marks clearly mocked Kanna's lack of intelligence.
At that moment, Kanna felt incredibly angry, being mocked by the system...
"Then what's the deal with your missions?"
"To prevent the system and host from colluding for cheating, this system's missions currently adopt the most advanced completely random method. Therefore, the missions you receive and the time you receive them are completely random, and I cannot control them. However, the host can live for a very long time, and there are no penalties for mission failure. If all else fails, you can just wait a bit longer, and there will eventually be missions that satisfy you."
Seeing these new words, Kanna looked helpless. She had originally thought that after talking to the system, she could trick it into giving her some benefits, or at the very least, get some preferential treatment on missions. But she had already used up the former, and the latter was something this trash system couldn't control.
"Beep beep beep!" A squad of heavily armed Lupos suddenly appeared ahead. Judging by their perfectly uniform suits and the short crossbows in their hands, these people were clearly not to be trifled with.
They were cautiously searching for something. Upon seeing the approaching vehicle, some of them pointed their weapons at it vigilantly.
Seeing the other party cautiously approaching, Kal'tsit generously rolled down the car window, signaling that there was no "danger" inside the vehicle.
"Apologies, we are merely passing travelers and have no intention of interfering with your work."
Seeing only a woman and a child inside the car, the approaching searchers visibly relaxed.
Just as everyone's attention was drawn to the newly arrived vehicle, Kanna saw a silver wolf emerge from behind the nearby trees. It covered the mouth of the last person with one hand, while the long sword in its other hand cleanly pierced through their chest and then twisted forcefully. The person trembled and then went limp.
Before the people in front could turn around, the wolf swung its sword, slitting the throats of the two closest individuals. Then, the silver wolf quickly ducked back into the woods. Everything appeared precise and deadly.
A few seconds later, smelling the blood, the remaining people suddenly realized their teammates had been killed.
Their shouts also attracted the attention of the people by the car. Realizing the vehicle had no connection to the enemy, those people lost any remaining patience and waved Kal'tsit to drive away.
While driving, Kanna reached out of the window, dropped a miniaturized Lightning Wedge behind a nearby rock, and suppressed its detonation. Kal'tsit, noticing Kanna's action, did not stop her.
After the car had driven dozens of meters away, a thunderous explosion suddenly erupted behind them. The thunderclap caused the Lupos to shift their attention to the side of the road, giving the silver wolf another opportunity.
Taking advantage of the two opportunities created by Kal'tsit's group, the silver wolf quickly eliminated the entire squad.
She looked in the direction the vehicle had departed, a hint of curiosity in her eyes. Although the previous time she had used the other party's arrival to find an opportunity to strike, the sudden explosion that followed was definitely the work of the other party. However, after searching her memories, she found she didn't recognize the two of them. So why would they help her?
Despite harboring a trace of doubt, her objective had been successfully achieved. The silver wolf did not linger and soon disappeared into the forest.
"Do you know them?" Kal'tsit continued to stare straight ahead.
"No!" Kanna replied calmly upon hearing Kal'tsit's question.
"Then why did you help her? Siracusa's composition is very complex. Don't think that everyone you save is a good person."
She didn't believe Kanna would help a stranger out of pure interest.
"Uh, how should I put it? How about you just consider it that I was satisfied with her 'performance'? Or perhaps, I had a premonition that Rhodes Island and she have a connection. That Lupo might become our companion."
As a member of Penguin Logistics, Kanna believed Lappland would not die here. Besides, since they had interacted, returning a small favor was just a casual thing to do. When the Doctor returned, Lappland would also stay on the island with Penguin Logistics for a while.
Back when they fought the suicide bombers and Sea Creatures, Lappland's Silence had saved her own life. Helping her now was also fulfilling a wish of her own.
Kal'tsit clearly didn't believe her. However, she didn't believe that this Little Dragon Person had any connection with the Siracusan mafia either. After all, she had seen the Lupo's actions, and the other party had observed them. If they had truly known each other, she wouldn't have acted so indifferently.
PS: These two chapters are a supplement to the system, explaining why Kanna couldn't turn back into her dragon form. Although I often forget about the system, since it's set, it can't be ignored. As for her appearance opportunities, it's probably the same as before, appearing occasionally and not affecting the reading experience. Of course, if you're not satisfied with this approach... there's nothing I can do, as my brain isn't that good either QAQ.
Chapter 100: Not Just Attraction...
Soon, the vehicle drove to a border town between Siracusa and Laterano.
Speaking of which, Siracusa had a standard Italian style, while Laterano was like the Holy Roman Empire. With the two bordering each other, Kanna felt a unique sensation.
Upon entering the town, Kal'tsit frowned slightly.
While the previous towns were also controlled by Siracusan "families," they were clearly well-managed. Even with a dark underbelly, it didn't affect normal life.
But as soon as they entered this town, they saw a group of people happily engaging in "zero-cost shopping."
Many shops around had been smashed, and at the end of the road, two groups were fiercely exchanging gunfire.
"It seems like a 'regime change' is happening here. Tsk! This is a rare sight in Siracusa. We really have bad luck." After observing for a short while, Kal'tsit had a good grasp of the situation.
In Siracusa, a stable town was usually led by a major family, with numerous smaller families orbiting around it. The leader of the major family was the town's Pontiff. For their own benefit and that of their family, they would strictly monitor the numbers of other families. To ensure the town's development, the Pontiff would also act with sufficient fairness. In this social structure, so different from other countries, ordinary people in Siracusa actually lived relatively stable lives.
Of course, there were special circumstances, such as "regime change." A Pontiff usually served a lifetime, but after their passing, a civil war was inevitable to vie for the new position.
"Have the gangs degenerated to this point? After a round of fighting like this, the town's economy will regress by at least ten years. They're changing leadership, and it's the ordinary people who suffer."
Kanna had read about "regime change" in books but never imagined it would be this chaotic.
"Look at what shops are being smashed?"
"Huh? Restaurants, what's that? An entertainment center?" Hearing Kal'tsit's words, Kanna observed her surroundings carefully. She suddenly realized this "zero-cost shopping" was also strange.
Their attacks seemed highly targeted. Two adjoining restaurants; one was smashed to pieces, while the other was completely unharmed, with people sitting inside watching the fight next door.
"These smashed shops must be the 'headquarters' of the opposing faction. Although Siracusa's gangs appear chaotic, they actually have their own rules within the chaos. Otherwise, if a regime change meant city-wide riots every time, the civilians of Siracusa would have fled to other countries long ago. But this has nothing to do with us. We're heading to the church in the west; hopefully, that won't be a battlefield."
Kal'tsit looked at the rising smoke to the west, feeling a sense of unease.
"Isn't this Siracusa? Why would there be a church? Why are we going there? Will there be Sarkaz people like the Outcast's grandmother there?"
