The Sarkaz lady smiled and pointed to a corner of the city, "Geller Patisserie, I think it's good. And the inn is right next door. You two, new to Scone Town, can go to the inn first, get a room, and then take a nice hot bath to wash away the fatigue of your journey. After that, you can go to Geller Patisserie for a perfect dessert."
"Thank you!"
After rolling down the car window, Kal'tsit nodded to the Sarkaz lady with a friendly thank you.
"You're welcome. May your journey be smooth."
It was clear that the Sarkaz girl was in a good mood while chatting.
Following the Sarkaz lady's directions, they quickly found the inn she mentioned.
Amidst Kal'tsit's deadpan expression, Kanna spent a sweet evening—eating nearly half of the patisserie's stock. It was fortunate that Kanna's physique was strong enough that she didn't have to worry about cavities from eating too much sugar. Otherwise, with her eating habits, ten out of ten people would have gotten cavities.
The next day, Kal'tsit successfully obtained a travel permit to Laterano by applying at the local church.
Since it was already afternoon, they decided to rest for another day before leaving.
Standing on a stool, Kanna looked at the Sarkaz people coming and going outside with some confusion.
"Didn't you say this was Sarkaz territory? Why are there so many Sarkaz? I thought we had already arrived in Laterano. Doesn't the 'Pontiff' here do anything about it?"
Kal'tsit was also a bit confused. When she was at the church today, she noticed that the Laterano presence here was a bit too strong. Compared to Siracusa, this place felt more like Laterano territory.
However, as she had told Kanna, they were just passing through. The residents of this town didn't seem to have any opinions on the current situation, so it wasn't their place to worry about which territory the town belonged to.
Fortunately, the inn's attendant answered their questions when bringing them dinner.
It turned out that when the current "Pontiff" took office, his strength was not the strongest among the candidates. Although he was designated as the successor by the previous "Pontiff" before his death, he couldn't suppress the other heirs.
In his helplessness, he reached an agreement with the Laterano envoys who came to mourn the former Pontiff. By agreeing to allow Laterano officials to send personnel to spread their faith, he gained support from Laterano and thus secured his position as "Pontiff" here.
Given that Scone Town was Siracusan territory, Laterano only dispatched a large number of missionaries, without any armed forces entering. This caused the religious faith in the town to become very strong, but it did not provoke any resistance from the Siracusan authorities.
In the attendant's words, they actually welcomed the arrival of these Laterano people. Although they were often startled by the sudden appearance of bright "light bulbs" late at night, these Laterano people were very law-abiding and completely unlike those "family" members who would resort to picking up whatever was nearby and starting a fight if a conversation didn't go well.
Hearing his words, Kal'tsit and Kanna exchanged glances. Good heavens, this could be considered a standard case of inviting a wolf into the house.
If anything were to happen here, this "Pontiff" would be branded a traitor to Siracusa for life.
Fortunately, as far as they could see, the Laterano people had no ambitions and simply wanted to open a gateway for evangelism from here. Otherwise, this place would have long ago become a flashpoint and battlefield for war between the two nations.
Kal'tsit understood then. No wonder the road to the application was filled with Sarkaz and Liberi people. It turned out this place had been largely "hollowed out" by Laterano.
The next morning, Kal'tsit, with Kanna in tow, successfully set foot on Laterano territory.
Compared to the desolation outside, entering Laterano territory was like arriving at a paradise. Kal'tsit spoke, "As of now, the Infected in Laterano are undoubtedly quite fortunate. They are only forbidden from entering various cities and territories, but due to the suitability of the region, even in the wilderness, as long as there are enough people, they can establish a small settlement where they can live. Moreover, Laterano's tax burden is light, and the oppression of the Infected is minimal. It's just that Laterano is very strict about entry; otherwise, countless Infected would have come to settle here."
Following Kal'tsit's guidance, Kanna saw people diligently cultivating the barren land. From the Originium Particles occasionally visible on their skin, it was clear that these were Infected residents.
Chapter 104: The Land Unloved by Young Dragons
Compared to the Infected outside who were full of sorrow and worried about their livelihood, these people with smiles and aspirations on their faces were undoubtedly living in paradise.
After entering Laterano, Kanna roughly understood why Kal'tsit had said that the Infected from outside couldn't get in.
As Kanna and her group, who didn't have searchlights on their heads, were constantly subjected to inspections from the moment they entered Laterano, and because Kal'tsit was Infected, they were denied entry into all the cities.
It was fortunate that they were only passing through Laterano. Even though they were not allowed into cities with non-Infected populations, they could still get sufficient supplies from the Infected gatherings outside, so it didn't pose much difficulty for the two of them.
However, Kanna also felt uncomfortable with Laterano's policy of outward leniency and inward strictness. Laterano was indeed a good place, but its unconditional preferential treatment was only for those Sarkaz with halos above their heads. Others always fell short by a sliver. Even though the Laterano guards they encountered on the road did not treat them differently because they were Infected, Kanna still wasn't impressed.
"What's wrong?" Kal'tsit asked, somewhat strangely, noticing Kanna had become rather dispirited after entering Laterano. After all, her body wouldn't catch a cold. She was so energetic in Siracusa before; why had she become so downcast in the better environment of Laterano?
"It's nothing. Before coming, I thought I would like it here, but after arriving, I found that reality and imagination are not the same. I don't like this country, and I don't know why. Let's leave quickly!"
Touching her horns and taking a deep breath, Kanna dispelled the annoyance in her heart and, uncharacteristically, urged Kal'tsit to hurry.
Hearing Kanna's words, Kal'tsit was slightly taken aback, then stepped on the accelerator. "Whether you like it or not, it will take us at least a week to cross the Laterano border. If you're uncomfortable, you can go sleep in the back of the car!"
"Okay!" Kanna climbed from the front passenger seat to the back and quickly fell asleep curled up on the cushion.
Kal'tsit, driving ahead, thoughtfully glanced towards the location of Laterano's capital, Laterano, and silently changed her original plan of passing through the middle of Laterano, opting for a detour around the side to their intended destination.
For the next few days, Kanna, as she had said, spent her days eating and sleeping, appearing to want to catch up on all her sleep. This prompted Kal'tsit to speed up her driving.
Finally, after about a week, the vehicle arrived at the border between Laterano and Iberia.
Upon entering the city, they saw a Liberi wearing a Rhodes Island uniform standing by the roadside, looking around for something.
Kal'tsit drove over and rolled down the car window.
Seeing Kal'tsit in the car, the person became very excited and walked over, "Hello, Doctor Kal'tsit. Operator Luosha reporting."
Kal'tsit nodded, "Hello, Luosha. I am Kal'tsit. To make a long story short, have the documents we need to go to Iberia been prepared?"
Luosha nodded, "They have been prepared. However, there probably won't be time today. If you don't mind, you can rest here for one night and get the travel permit at the border management office tomorrow morning."
Kal'tsit nodded, "Then I'll trouble you."
Hearing Kal'tsit's words, Luosha could tell he was very pleased. "It is an honor for all of us field operators to be able to do something for Doctor Kal'tsit. The resting place has already been prepared for you."
"Kanna! Wake up, we're resting here for a day and leaving Laterano tomorrow."
Hearing Kal'tsit's words, Kanna groggily poked her head out of the car, rubbing her eyes.
Seeing the operator in the Rhodes Island uniform standing beside them, Kanna waved hello enthusiastically, "Hello, my name is Kanna!"
"Hello Kanna, my name is Luosha. I'm the field Operator in charge here!" Seeing Kanna, Luosha first glanced at Kal'tsit in surprise. Thinking it was impossible for a Feline to give birth to a Vayvan, he then nervously shifted his gaze to Kanna and greeted her with a smile.
Kanna clearly saw his actions, but thinking that Kal'tsit would likely give her a hard time if she laughed, she held back.
Led by Luosha, the group drove to a house and went inside.
"This style is very Rhodes Island!" Upon entering, Kanna felt a sense of familiarity with the house's arrangement. After recalling, she realized it was the same decorative style frequently used within Rhodes Island and couldn't help but exclaim.
"That's right. I've been away from Rhodes Island for three years, and I still remember every corner of the place," Luosha nodded proudly.
"I recall you submitted an application to return?" Kal'tsit asked Luosha after putting down her backpack.
"Yes, it's a bit embarrassing to say, but despite my efforts in Laterano for three years, there hasn't been much progress. The people here are too stubborn. Not many Infected are willing to interact with us, and most Sarkaz choose to leave Laterano after becoming Infected."
Luosha couldn't help but sigh at this point.
Kal'tsit nodded upon hearing this. "I understand the situation in Laterano quite well. When you came here three years ago, I actually thought you'd be quickly defeated by the reality here and return to the Island. I didn't expect you to persevere for so long before making a decision. But it's not too late. Once Kanna and I leave, you should withdraw from here and report back to Rhodes Island. Your talents are being wasted here."
Luosha's eyes welled up with tears upon hearing this. "Thank you, Doctor Kal'tsit. I will work hard when I get back."
As the two chatted, melodious violin music drifted from the side. They followed the sound and found Kanna holding the violin like a cello, resting it against her chest, her bow gently stroking the strings.
After the piece concluded, Luosha clapped his hands. "A beautiful performance. Although the technique is a bit rusty, it's undoubtedly a perfect piece. May I have the honor of knowing its name?"
"Speak softly love" Kanna picked up the violin and placed it in its case.
"Hehe, sorry about that. I learned the violin from Amiya for a few days, and when I saw a violin here, I couldn't resist playing it."
"Gentle Confession, the name is as beautiful as the song. When I was at Rhodes Island, Amiya and I discussed the violin. She's a very talented child." Hearing Kanna mention Amiya, Luosha's expression became even happier. He slapped his forehead, dashed into the house, and brought out a large cake.
"I was a bit surprised when Rhodes Island sent a letter, because the letter said it would be best to prepare a sufficiently large dessert after your arrival. I estimated your itinerary, and I've been preparing for the past few days. Please try it, it's a freshly made cake today."
Chapter 105 Chapter Ninety-Nine: The Old Man of Iberia
"Wow, preparing such a big one every day, can you eat it all yourself?" Kanna was very satisfied looking at the cake brought out. This person is good; worth befriending.
"Don't underestimate the love Laterano people have for sweets. Of course, after confirming you wouldn't be coming each evening, I'd share the cake with the children around here," Luosha said with a smile, taking out a plate and handing it to Kanna.
"You've spent too much!" Kal'tsit didn't take the plate but nodded and sat down to the side.
"Um, Luosha, are you eating?" Kanna asked Luosha, pointing to the cake in front of her.
Hearing Kanna's words, Luosha waved his hand. "I've eaten quite a bit these past few days, you can have it yourself…"
After Luosha finished speaking, Kanna's eyes narrowed. Her hands moved with the sound of wind, and to Luosha's astonishment, she finished the entire cake, enough for seven or eight adults, in less than a minute.
Smacking her lips, Kanna gave a thumbs-up to Luosha, whose eyes were nearly popping out. "The cake is good, Kanna likes it very much."
"This… this… Doctor Kal'tsit, this…" Luosha, shocked by Kanna's terrifying eating, couldn't even speak properly for a moment.
"Don't worry, Kanna has a very strong digestive system. She's the number one danger to the kitchen at Rhodes Island," Kal'tsit said, pinching her brow and helplessly trying to appease the flustered Luosha.
"Hahaha, I didn't expect that after I left for three years, such an interesting little fellow would come to Rhodes Island." It took a while for Luosha to accept reality after looking at the empty plate. Thinking that even the usually stoic Kal'tsit described her this way, he could imagine what the kitchen was like every time Kanna went for a meal at Rhodes Island.
And so, the next morning, Luosha, holding a stack of documents, led Kal'tsit to the Entry-Exit Administration Bureau to complete the registration. He then watched the two leave Laterano.
The vehicle soon entered its destination, Iberia.
However, compared to Siracusa, which was family-oriented, and Laterano, which was outwardly lax but inwardly tight, Iberia presented another appearance.
Upon entering, Kanna's first impression was silence.
As a country with a vast coastline, Iberia suffered heavy losses during the "Great Silence" that nearly caused the nation to collapse. Furthermore, the subsequent activities of the "Sea Creatures" and their followers, who established a cult group called the Abyssal Church within Iberia, had caused the country to fade from mainstream continental attention.
As the vehicle passed by on the road, the Iberians on both sides simply watched quietly, neither greeting nor rejecting. They were as silent as the name "Great Silence" itself.
However, what made Kanna curious was that in Siracusa, Kal'tsit had deliberately concealed her body to avoid being seen as Infected. In Laterano, after openly admitting to being Infected, she had to stay in the wilderness, only spending one night in a nearby "village" before leaving. But upon arriving in Iberia, Kal'tsit openly drove into the city without concealing her Infected status.
"Iberia is different from other countries. They don't discriminate against Infected here. However, due to the proliferation of cults, it's not a suitable place for most people to live. Coupled with Iberia's increasingly stringent religious rule, the once glorious Land of Gold has become what it is today."
It was evident that Kal'tsit spoke of Iberia with more remembrance and lamentation, lamenting the changes over time.
While Kal'tsit was having a meal with Kanna in a small restaurant in the city, the door opened, and a handsome old man walked in from outside.
Upon seeing the old man, everyone in the shop, including the owner, appeared very nervous. However, the old man merely pointed to Kal'tsit's location and said, "Give me a portion of the shop's specialty."
With that, he sat down opposite Kal'tsit.
Kanna glanced up at him before continuing to tackle the ten-person feast in front of her. Kal'tsit, upon seeing him, showed no signs of panic or other emotions, calmly enjoying her meal.
When the shopkeeper served the old man his meal, Kal'tsit had just finished eating.
"Why don't you wait for me?" the old man said.
Kal'tsit remained silent, sitting there quietly, her gaze seemingly signaling him to begin.
After saying "excuse me," the old man began to tackle his food.
"Kal'tsit, you're not this serious with all those handsome uncles at Rhodes Island. Do you have a thing for this type?" Kanna suddenly said, breaking the increasingly stifling atmosphere.
Hearing her words, the old man was clearly caught off guard. He was so surprised that he didn't pay attention and choked.
"Cough, cough, cough! My apologies. I didn't expect Kal'tsit to bring such an interesting little fellow to Iberia." The old man took a sip of the water Kal'tsit handed him and finally felt much better.
"Tonight's study session will be doubled!" Kal'tsit first sternly declared to Kanna before continuing, "My apologies, the little one is ignorant. I hope 'Saint' and your friends will bear with us."
The old man, whom Kal'tsit addressed as 'Saint,' glanced at the several individuals standing at the doorway who had drawn their weapons because of Kanna's remark. He frowned slightly. "She's just a child, speaking without thinking. Do you really need to draw your swords?"
"Apologies, Your Excellency!" Hearing the reprimand, the group apologized as they sheathed their weapons.
"Kal'tsit, these Iberians are as boring as fossils..." Kanna naturally noticed their movements and couldn't help but retort sarcastically, "Pulling out knives to my face, do they think I have no temper?"
"Shut up. Say one more word and your evening studies will be doubled." To prevent Kanna's loose tongue from causing inexplicable trouble, Kal'tsit immediately suppressed Kanna's defiance.
Kanna was very angry about this. She pulled the shopkeeper next to her, pointed at the most expensive dish, and rubbed her stomach before holding her hands up in front of him.
"Uh... little one, do you mean you want ten orders of this dish?" The shopkeeper's legs trembled slightly, but his mind was still working. Although Kanna hadn't said a word, he understood her meaning.
After speaking, he looked at Kal'tsit.
"Bring her ten orders," Kal'tsit said, taking a stack of money from her bag.
"Since you're in Iberia, Kal'tsit, how can I let you pay? I'll treat you to this meal. Shopkeeper, please serve the food. Send the bill to the church later; you won't be shortchanged a single cent," the old man stopped Kal'tsit from handing over the money.
Only after hearing the old man speak did the shopkeeper nod and retreat into the kitchen.
"May I ask what brings Your Excellency Kal'tsit to Iberia this time? And bringing such an interesting little companion!" the old man asked very elegantly while dining.
