Background / History
Yan is one of Spirit Hall's Golden Generation and a personal disciple of Pope Bibi Dong. He possesses the Flame Lord, a top-tier fire- and earth-attribute beast martial soul noted for violent offensive power, exceptional defense, and the ability to challenge higher-ranked opponents 24.
During an encounter in the Sunset Forest, Yan attacks Ning Xiaochun and is stopped by Shui Bing'er, whose ice attribute freezes his fire attack and nearly freezes him solid 22. He escalates the conflict into a wagered duel against Ning Xiaochun and Shui Bing'er, promising to kneel and kowtow if defeated 23.
Yan uses Flame Lord possession against the pair, but their combined control and support abilities overwhelm him. Ning Xiaochun's Soft Muscle Evil weakens him, while Shui Bing'er's ice skills restrain him; Ning Xiaochun then uses the martial soul fusion skill Ring Reduction to lower Yan's soul power and seal his rings. Shui Bing'er leaves him frozen between life and death, forcing him to honor the wager and apologize 24 25.
After returning to Spirit Hall, Yan reports Ning Xiaochun's twin pagoda martial souls and Ring Reduction to Bibi Dong, though the report is humiliating for him. Bibi Dong subsequently confirms that Yan has reached level forty-one, making him a four-ring Soul Ancestor 34. He later admits his feelings for Shui Bing'er and decides to pursue her despite her connection to Ning Xiaochun 35.
Yan travels to Tianshui Academy with Chrysanthemum Douluo and Ghost Douluo to seek a marriage alliance with Shui Bing'er. Dean Leng Ningshuang delays the matter until Shui Bing'er comes of age, but Yan remains confident he can win her over 38 39. With Bibi Dong's approval, he later returns with a lavish dowry and attempts to force the marriage despite Shui Bing'er's betrothal to Ning Xiaochun 45 47.
Shui Bing'er publicly rejects him, then accepts his challenge: if he wins, she must marry him; if he loses, he must never trouble her again. She defeats him in one move, freezing half his body 48 49. Yan calls on Chrysanthemum Douluo and Ghost Douluo rather than accepting the loss, and later provokes Ning Xiaochun into a duel. Ning Xiaochun defeats him with successive weakening skills and Soul Tools, then leaves him severely injured and unconscious 50 53. His injuries damage his cultivation foundation, cap him at level eighty-nine, and prevent him from becoming a Title Douluo 54.
Following his treatment, Yan protests that Ning Xiaochun's victory was unfair, but Bibi Dong dismisses his excuses and reprimands him for being defeated by a Support System Soul Master. Though humiliated, he becomes eager to regain her favor and continues hoping that Spirit Hall's pressure will eventually separate Shui Bing'er from Ning Xiaochun 55.
Appearance
During Flame Lord possession, Yan undergoes a pronounced fire-aligned transformation 24.
- His body grows taller and more muscular.
- His skin turns deep burning red, likened to heated iron.
- His short fire-red hair stands upright and ignites into flames.
- His eyes become crimson.
- His scorching aura withers and chars nearby vegetation.
Personality
Yan is arrogant, hot-headed, and prone to underestimating opponents. He considers his status in Spirit Hall's Golden Generation and the power of his Flame Lord martial soul grounds for confidence against weaker-ranked foes, even when their abilities are unfamiliar 22 24.
His defeats deeply wound his pride. After losing to Ning Xiaochun and Shui Bing'er, he leaves humiliated and vows revenge; after Shui Bing'er defeats him again, he resorts to calling on elders rather than accepting the result 26 49. His pursuit of Shui Bing'er becomes possessive: he disregards her established engagement and seeks to pressure her through Spirit Hall's authority and a lavish dowry 45 47.
Following his crippling defeat by Ning Xiaochun, Yan refuses to accept responsibility and initially attributes his loss to sorcery and underhanded methods. Bibi Dong's rebuke leaves him desperate to restore his standing, making him increasingly submissive to her authority and her plans regarding Shui Bing'er 54 55.
