Background / History

Yu Xiaogang is the son of Yu Yuanzhen, leader of the Blue Lightning Tyrant Dragon Clan. His martial soul mutated into Luo Sanpao, leaving him unable to advance beyond level 29 and poorly regarded within his clan. He was ultimately driven from the sect, though his blood relationship with Yu Yuanzhen remained intact. 4 27 28

He spent years studying and discussing soul master theory. Bibi Dong was initially drawn to his gentle, learned manner and his ability to speak persuasively about theory; however, she later concluded that he largely recited predecessors’ work without producing recognized research or practical achievements of his own. 10

Yu Xiaogang developed the Ten Core Competencies of Martial Souls and sought Spirit Hall’s recognition and resources for his research. At the time Bibi Dong tried to defend him, however, she could not explain the theory’s contents or cite concrete accomplishments connected to it. 4

Following his humiliation by bandits, Yu Xiaogang abandoned his ambition to prove himself through theory. When he returned to the clan, he told Yu Yuanzhen that he had already discarded his theory manuscripts. 30 54

Yu Xiaogang subsequently married Ning Feng through an alliance between the Blue Lightning Tyrant Dragon Clan and the Seven Treasure Glazed Tile Sect. Though their marriage is mutually beneficial rather than deeply affectionate, they live in relative harmony. He also takes concubines as part of his effort to secure the clan’s continuation. 112

When Deng Tianxin publicly criticizes his theories, Yu Xiaogang quickly assumes Bibi Dong is orchestrating a conspiracy against him and suspects that she sought him as a means of infiltrating the Blue Lightning Tyrant Dragon Clan. 26 27

He avoids confrontation when overwhelmed. He believes Deng Tianxin’s fabricated claim that Bibi Dong has a child, distances himself from Bibi Dong, and flees rather than hear her explanation. 8 9 After being beaten by bandits, he finally recognizes his own limitations and resolves to return home, marry, and invest his knowledge in raising a powerful son. 30 31

Although he initially seeks only a quiet, ordinary life, Yu Xiaogang becomes intensely invested in securing a successful heir. Yu Xiaogang meets Bibi Dong while she is preparing to take Deng Tianxin as a disciple. Deng Tianxin calls Bibi Dong “Mommy” and claims that Yu Xiaogang is intended to become his stepfather. Yu Xiaogang finds the story believable enough to distrust Bibi Dong, withdraws from her, and ultimately breaks off their relationship. 7 8 9

Theories Challenged

The Ten Core Competencies of Martial Souls gains public attention, but Deng Tianxin dismisses the work as largely useless. Yu Xiaogang overhears the criticism and interprets it as part of Bibi Dong’s supposed attempt to destroy him and control his clan through marriage. 25 26 27

Bandit Ambush and Self-Reckoning

While fleeing toward the Blue Lightning Tyrant Dragon Clan, Yu Xiaogang is ambushed by bandits led by Bald Scar. His level 29 spirit power fails to deter them, and Luo Sanpao’s hypnosis smoke cannot stop their attack. The bandits beat him, steal his belongings—including his theory manuscript—and ridicule both his martial soul and research. 28 29

The assault forces Yu Xiaogang to acknowledge that neither his martial soul nor his theories have made him strong. He chooses to abandon his hopes of proving himself through research and instead plans to return to his clan, marry, and raise a son who can succeed where he failed. 30 31

Return to the Blue Lightning Tyrant Dragon Clan

Yu Xiaogang returns home in a disheveled state and kneels before Yu Yuanzhen. He asks to marry a simple woman and live peacefully while raising a child. Yu Yuanzhen, pleased that his son has accepted reality, offers the possibility of a concubine-born daughter from the Seven Treasure Glazed Tile Sect or several women from their own clan; Yu Xiaogang agrees to follow his father’s arrangements. 53 54

Yu Xiaogang also confirms that he has thrown away his theory manuscripts, demonstrating to Yu Yuanzhen that he has given up his previous obsession with proving their worth. 54

Marriage and Fatherhood

Over the following year, Yu Xiaogang enters a marriage alliance with Ning Feng and takes concubines to make multiple preparations for the continuation of the Blue Lightning Tyrant Dragon Clan. He studies martial-soul mutation in detail, hoping that one of his children will inherit or develop a superior dragon martial soul. 112

When Ning Feng gives birth to a son, Yu Xiaogang is deeply anxious and treats the child with great care. He names the infant Yu San, placing his future hopes and his desire to restore the family’s honor upon him. 112 113

Yu Yuanzhen’s acceptance of Yu San gives Yu Xiaogang a rare experience of paternal warmth. Determined not to repeat his own failures through his son, Yu Xiaogang vows that Yu San will not become like him. 115
