Background

Born as the Zhu Clan’s Second Young Lady, Zhu Zhuqing was raised under a brutal inheritance system in which only one sister could inherit the main family name. She was bullied and pressured from childhood, while members of her extended family were reduced to impoverished lives if they failed to meet the clan’s standards. 107 119

Her residence within the Zhu Mansion resembled a prison: it was enclosed by reinforced doors and high walls, guarded closely, and supplied through the servant Zhu Laoqi. 106 Zhu Laoqi eventually helped her escape by concealing her inside a water vat on his supply cart. 106 107

Zhu Zhuqing fled toward the Star Dou Great Forest, pursued by her elder sister Zhu Zhuyun. Zhu Zhuyun publicly offered reconciliation and promised to plead with Dai Weisi, but Zhuqing rejected her overtures, recalling past betrayals. Zhu Zhuyun then directed two Spirit King elders to pursue her into the forest, ordering that they bring Zhuqing back alive or recover her corpse. 108
