"Mission difficulty increased. New mission: establish a nation and unify the continent within twenty years. High difficulty." "Blue Star world training mission rewards increased. Congratulations, you have obtained: the best Super Twin Martial Souls (Martial Soul type selection is no longer limited to Douluo Continent), one copy each of the Method of Soul Master Cultivation, Soul Beast Compendium, and Rank 10 Soul Master's Handbook."
The moment the Artifact Spirit's voice fell silent, Jing Chen could feel that something seemed to have appeared within his body. His body felt warm.
At the same time, an exquisitely crafted ring suddenly appeared on the middle finger of Jing Chen's right hand.
Jing Chen: ???
"So the increased reward means the Twin Martial Souls went from top-tier to super?" Jing Chen was somewhat speechless, unsure how to complain.
The mission time had been cut in half, increasing the difficulty by far more than double, yet the reward had merely changed from top-tier Martial Souls to Super Martial Souls.
Oh, no, that was not quite right. They had also changed from random to best.
Taken literally, it meant these two Martial Souls were the most suitable for him rather than being randomly drawn. That was fairly important.
The Method of Soul Master Cultivation, Soul Beast Compendium, and Rank 10 Soul Master's Handbook would also be quite useful.
But even so, these rewards still seemed somewhat mismatched with the increased difficulty.
"Artifact Spirit, what are these two Martial Souls?" Jing Chen accepted reality and curiously asked about their names.
At the same time, he studied the ring that had suddenly appeared on the middle finger of his right hand. This should be a Storage Ring, right? Was it meant for holding the handbook?
Silence. The Artifact Spirit did not respond again.
"As cold as ever." Jing Chen sighed helplessly. After receiving no answer, he gave up on asking.
He had more or less figured out the Artifact Spirit's temperament. Aside from speaking to him when issuing or concluding missions, it ignored him at all other times, cold to the point of being nearly heartless.
"Douluo Continent, awakening Martial Souls at six... and I need to complete the training mission before I turn twenty-one. That really isn't much time." Jing Chen muttered to himself.
The mission time limit was twenty years, and he was currently one year old. In other words, he needed to complete the mission before turning twenty-one.
He was still fairly confident that he could finish the mission within the time limit. After all, he was not actually a one-year-old child.
His understanding of the Douluo world, along with what he had learned in the Blue Star world, would all become things he could rely on in this world.
Jing Chen temporarily stopped studying the ring in his hand. He slowly stood, lightly stretching his limbs to get accustomed to his body.
At one year old, he was the height of an ordinary child, a little over seventy centimeters tall. He was not fat, though he still had some baby fat.
He wore a long shirt and trousers, with a hat on his head to cover his sparse hair, which had yet to fully grow in.
Jing Chen was fairly satisfied with this outfit. At least he was not naked and would not have to worry about clothes.
"Douluo Continent, Soul Masters, Soul Beasts..." Jing Chen's childish face looked slightly solemn. This forest made him feel uneasy.
He still could not determine whether the forest he was in was an ordinary one or a Soul Beast Forest inhabited by Soul Beasts.
If it was the former, that would be fine and relatively safe. If it was the latter, he needed to consider how to safely leave the forest.
The Soul Beasts of this world were different from ordinary animals. Their combat power was extraordinary. If he encountered one, his chances of survival would be slim.
"Yiyi. (There's a wolf over there.)" The little tiger Yiyi stood on all fours beside Jing Chen's left foot and let out a low growl toward the forest ahead.
Jing Chen's expression changed slightly. He hurriedly looked in the direction Yiyi indicated. Though he could not see a wolf, he had complete faith in Yiyi's words. If it said there was one, there definitely was.
"Yiyi, let's hide first," Jing Chen said in a low voice. With his current body, all he could do if he encountered a wolf was hide.
"Yiyi. (I can protect you.)" Yiyi looked back at Jing Chen, as though saying that there was nothing to fear with it around.
Jing Chen froze briefly and looked at Yiyi with slight surprise.
Out of trust in Yiyi, he did not move. He believed Yiyi truly had the ability to protect him.
Thoughtfully observing Yiyi's new form, he carefully sensed its condition through the special connection between them.
"In this life, Yiyi reincarnated as a Dark Demon Evil God Tiger?" Jing Chen understood Yiyi's race in this life.
The Dark Demon Evil God Tiger was a Soul Beast from Douluo Continent, one that had appeared during Tang San's era.
It was a Super Soul Beast that wielded six attributes: evil, darkness, lightning, wind, time, and space. Its bloodline quality was extraordinarily high, and few Soul Beasts could compare to it.
"Awoo..." As Jing Chen pondered this, a giant dark-purple wolf twice the size of an ordinary wolf rushed toward them, letting out an excited howl.
"Yiyi! (Come on!)" Yi Yi, the Dark Demon Evil God Tiger, cried out just as excitedly. Its short little limbs moved swiftly as it charged at the purple giant wolf.
"Yiyi, be careful. Don't let your guard down," Jing Chen quickly warned, watching the imminent battle without blinking.
"Yiyi! (Watch this, divine beast!)" Facing the giant wolf's snapping jaws, Yiyi bent its limbs and leaped with all its strength.
Yiyi easily cleared the giant wolf's biting mouth, then forcefully planted both hind paws on the wolf's upper jaw.
Though Yiyi was only the size of a small dog, the force of that kick was anything but light. The giant wolf felt as though it had been struck by a rock. Its expression twisted in pain, its head sank, and its body staggered along with it.
Fortunately, the giant wolf reacted quickly. It adjusted in time and steadied itself. Yet at the very moment it regained its balance, a stabbing pain came from its neck.
Yiyi had already jumped onto the giant wolf's neck. Its sharp tiger claws gripped the wolf's hide tightly and dug deep inside.
Its scorpion-tail-like tiger tail pointed downward, and the hook at its tip effortlessly pierced the giant wolf's skin, plunging deeply into its body.
The fur on Yiyi's body lit up with black light, while the black light around its tail hook was especially intense. Faintly, energy could be seen flowing backward from the hook into Yiyi's body.
"Awooo! Awooo! Awooo!" The purple giant wolf howled in pain and panic, struggling violently in an attempt to throw Yiyi off.
Yiyi's tiger claws held on tightly, as if it had fused with the giant wolf. No matter how the wolf struggled, it was useless.
"Is Yiyi absorbing this Soul Beast's energy and life force?" Jing Chen was delighted, but he was also thinking.
The giant wolf's size and abnormal energy were not something an ordinary animal could possess. It was clearly a Soul Beast.
As for its age, there was no way to know. Jing Chen did not yet know how to judge a Soul Beast's species or cultivation age.
A few minutes later, the purple giant wolf was dead. A pale yellow Soul Ring floated out from its corpse.
Only through that yellow Soul Ring did Jing Chen realize that it had been a Hundred-Year Soul Beast.
The major Soul Beast classifications on Douluo Continent were ten-year, hundred-year, thousand-year, ten-thousand-year, Hundred Thousand Year, and million-year Soul Beasts.
Their corresponding Soul Ring colors were white, yellow, purple, black, red—or orange—and gold.
A yellow Soul Ring was the mark of a Hundred-Year Soul Beast.
"Yiyi! (I'm amazing, right?)" Yiyi ran back on its short little legs, raised its tiny head, and looked at Jing Chen proudly.
"Amazing!" Jing Chen crouched down, helping Yiyi smooth out its slightly disheveled fur from the battle as he smiled and praised it.
"The Dark Demon Evil God Tiger's devouring ability really is quite formidable," Jing Chen praised softly.
He could sense that after absorbing the Hundred-Year Soul Beast's cultivation, Yiyi had grown somewhat stronger.
The immediate effect of that increase was rather terrifying. It meant Yiyi could grow rapidly by continuously devouring Soul Beasts.
"Yiyi, I'll be relying on you in the future." Jing Chen smiled.
At those words, Yiyi lifted its head high and revealed a human-like, smug smile. Don't worry. I'll protect you from now on.
Jing Chen smiled and looked around. For the next few years, he might have to spend quite a bit of time in this Soul Beast Forest.
