Background / History
Inherited Poison and Apprenticeship
Dugu Yan belongs to a family whose Jade Phosphorus Snake lineage has practiced poison for generations while suffering from its own soul poison. She initially does not know that she is poisoned. Dugu Bo brings her to the Strange Flower—Qingxi's reincarnated plant body—hoping that cultivation nearby will cleanse her toxins 2 4 18.
Although tempted by the flower's potential benefits, Yan refuses to destroy it and says she wants to cultivate through her own ability. She agrees to remain after Dugu Bo promises her the Nine-Section Jade snake if she reaches level 25 before the academy opens 2 3.
After meeting Qingxi in human form, Yan becomes her disciple. Qingxi tests her spiritual roots, teaches her cultivation and herbal knowledge, and provides the resources that cure her poisoning. Yan subsequently leaves for the academy, promises to return during breaks, and asks her grandfather to protect Qingxi's plant body 4 6.
Qingxi's Presumed Death
During Qingxi's six-year absence, Yan believes her master has died. Her grief becomes an obsession, and accumulated negative emotions place her on the verge of demonic cultivation. She attacks Qingxi on her return, mistaking her for an intruder at her master's resting place, before recognizing and embracing her 10 16.
Qingxi has her soak in the Ice and Fire Spirit Pool to remove the demonic energy and aid her cultivation. Their renewed travels lead to Yan obtaining the Blazing Poison Flame Jiao's fifth ring and wing-producing bone 10 13.
Return to Heaven Dou Royal Academy
After forming her Golden Core, Yan returns to the academy to reunite with friends and prepare for the Continental Advanced Spirit Master Academy Elite Tournament. She is recognized as the strongest student of the Heaven Dou Grade and the youngest Spirit King in the Heaven Dou Empire 24 25.
She presents Qingxi publicly as her younger sister, Dugu Qingxi, and helps arrange her enrollment and nearby accommodation. When He Shuwen becomes excessively interested in Qingxi's talent, Yan insists that the academy must not interfere with her sister's cultivation plans 26 27.
Shrek Rivalry and Team Leadership
Yan initially dislikes Shrek's bullying and lecherous behavior while acknowledging its students' combat ability. Her distrust of Qin Ming grows when he favors Shrek during the conflict with the Imperial Fighting Team. After the arena confrontation, she treats her teammates to dinner and organizes their next ring hunt 11 12 60 62 63.
Applying Qingxi's explanation of body tempering, Yan leads the hunt for Yu Tianheng's fourth ring. She rejects a low-age serpent, captures a thirty-four-thousand-year Golden Crocodile Dragon, and gives Tianheng a Body Tempering Pill before he absorbs its ring 64.
Her hostility becomes a death feud after Shrek damages the Dugu medicinal garden and injures Qingxi's origin. She refrains from poisoning them because Qingxi has instructed her not to act. Nevertheless, she offers Ning Rongrong and Zhu Zhuqing the option to sit out a future match against their former classmates 88.
Soul Emperor and Imperial Interest
Yan accompanies Qingxi into the Star Dou Great Forest to obtain her sixth ring. With her master's assistance, she absorbs the Sky Azure Bull Python's hundred-thousand-year ring and right arm bone, reaching level 63 91 93 94.
Her strength attracts political attention: Emperor Xue Ye considers marrying her to Crown Prince Xue Qinghe and later questions her about the Dugu Family's ability to absorb unusually old rings. Yan answers cautiously and remains suspicious of his intentions 94 110 111.
When reunited with Qingxi and Guang Ling, Yan struggles with no longer being the person closest to her master. Following a tense confrontation and a private conversation with Qingxi, she resolves to seek experience outside after the tournament 123 124.
Appearance
- Hair: Described as long and ink-blue during her Golden Core breakthrough; later appearances describe striking dark-purple short hair 24 108.
- Eyes: Emerald green 60 108.
- Manicure: Examines her newly painted purple nails while confronting Shrek before the finals 109.
- Dragon wings: Her Blazing Poison Flame Jiao bone manifests enormous fiery-red wings, described as over three meters long, with cyan flames at their tips 13 16.
- Academy uniform: Appears with Heaven Dou Royal First Team in pale-yellow uniforms bearing the academy crest 108.
Personality
Yan combines pride in her strength with an affectionate, playful manner toward those she trusts. She seeks Qingxi's praise, acts spoiled around her grandfather, and enthusiastically embraces Ye Lingling after their separation. Her attachment to Qingxi is especially intense: presumed bereavement nearly leads her into demonic cultivation, while Guang Ling's arrival provokes loneliness and jealousy 4 10 18 27 124.
Her protectiveness extends to her teammates. She confronts unwanted attention toward Ning Rongrong and Zhu Zhuqing, supports Rongrong's attempt to recover money from Shrek, and defends Zhuqing against Dai Mubai. Despite her threatening exterior, she also volunteers to help after the attack on Soto City's Spirit Hall because civilians depend on martial-soul awakening for a chance to improve their lives 58 102 109 120.
Yan can be vindictive, considering poison as retaliation and asking Qingxi to keep Shrek's teachers kneeling overnight. She is not indiscriminately hostile, however: she acknowledges Shrek's strength, comforts her team after defeat, and respects her friends' reluctance to fight former classmates 44 60 63 88.
Abilities & Skills
Jade Phosphorus Snake Emperor and Poison Arts
Her martial soul evolves from the Jade Phosphorus Snake into the Jade Phosphorus Snake Emperor. Dugu Bo considers her poison techniques superior to his own by the time she reaches level 51 12 16.
- Recognizes Human-Faced Demon Spider venom from its effects 41.
- Uses poison needles in combat 10.
- Can turn the Soul Fighting Platform into a sea of poison while airborne 62.
- Gains Blazing Poison Phosphorus Fire from her fifth ring 13.
- Origin Spirit Liquid cures her inherited poisoning and is described by Qingxi as granting immunity to all poisons 4.
Azure Wood Heart Method
Qingxi teaches Yan this Wood-aligned immortal cultivation method. Its breakthroughs generate large amounts of life energy that can also benefit other practitioners of the method 4 23.
- Senses the pulse of nearby plants after forming her Golden Core 24.
- Manipulates thousands of fallen leaves into a floating Taiji pattern, then fires them like blades 24.
- Her breakthrough causes uncontrolled vegetation growth, including a birch tree reaching forty meters 24.
- After Golden Core formation, the method circulates automatically, including when she is not actively cultivating 44.
Wind Control Technique
Yan's Wind spiritual root supports the Wind Control Technique transmitted by Qingxi 4.
- Rides the wind at Foundation Establishment despite her martial soul having no innate flight ability 12.
- Condenses a wind blade to finish the mortally wounded Sky Azure Bull Python 93.
- Produces invisible wind blades without detectable soul-power fluctuations, placing them a centimeter from Shrek members' eyes 109.
Blazing Poison Flame Jiao Bone
The bone obtained from her fifth-ring beast gives Yan massive dragon wings. Qingxi calls it a torso bone; Dugu Bo identifies its manifestation as an external spirit bone 13 16.
- Provides winged flight independently of her wind-riding technique 13 64.
- Manifests fiery-red wings with sinister, scorching cyan flames 16.
- Can propel her at such speed that she cannot stop before colliding with a cliff when Guang Ling moves Qingxi out of her path 123.
Sky Azure Bull Python Right Arm Bone
Her first hundred-thousand-year soul bone grants two named skills 93 94.
- Sluggish Domain: Her first domain skill 94.
- Sky Azure Annihilation Thunder: A thunder-based skill associated with lightning manifesting around her right arm and palm 94.
Body Tempering and High-Age Ring Absorption
Yan's enhanced physique enables her to absorb rings beyond conventional age limits. Qingxi clarifies that her third, fourth, and fifth rings are supported by bodily strength—not simply by the Origin Spirit Liquid itself 43.
- Her first two rings upgrade from hundred-year to thousand-year rings following martial-soul evolution 25 43.
- Her fourth ring comes from a thirty-thousand-year beast 64.
- Shares the body-tempering approach with her teammates and prepares Yu Tianheng for a thirty-four-thousand-year fourth ring 64.
- Still faces spiritual danger during absorption: the Sky Azure Bull Python's resentment injures her until Qingxi leads her through a salvation mantra 93.
Herbal Knowledge and Alchemy
Qingxi transmits the Shennong Herb Classic, including herbal information and alchemical theory 4 20.
- Identifies the Three Pure Green Spirit Lotus and recites its medicinal uses and role in the ninth-grade Flying Immortal Pill 20.
- Discusses alchemy with Qingxi and sells medicinal pills for income 15 44.
- Helps Dugu Bo begin immortal cultivation by sharing the Azure Wood Heart Method and supplying cultivation resources 18 21.
Healing
- Treats injured Imperial Fighting Team members after their battle with Shrek, while Qingxi secretly removes their poison. The healing technique used is not named 61.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Red Scale: A weapon given by Qingxi and named by Yan. Binding it with essence blood creates a martial-soul-like connection. It functions as a scaled whip and releases thirty-six independently moving golden-red scales. Yan believes the scales could pierce a level-70-plus master's martial soul avatar, though this is presented as her assessment rather than a demonstrated feat 39.
- Storage jade pendant: Bears the character “Dao” and contains more space than an ordinary storage soul tool. Qingxi stocks it with spirit stones, food, and high-grade pills. She later tells Yan to crush it in an emergency so that she can come to her aid regardless of distance 12 94.
- Sixth-grade Violence Pill: Stored in the jade pendant; described as granting tenfold strength and unlimited energy for three minutes without side effects 12.
- Evolution Pill: Receives a highest-quality pill from Qingxi, who instructs her to take it secretly in seclusion. Its stated purpose is to break martial-soul bloodline limits 20.
- Imperial palace pass: Possesses a token identical to the one Xue Qinghe gives Qingxi 41.
- Diamond Soul Fighting Badge: Confirmed in conversation with Yu Feng; its acquisition is not shown in the supplied passages 126.
Relationships

Continuity Notes

- Flame Jiao bone classification: Qingxi calls the wing-producing bone a torso bone, while Dugu Bo identifies it as an external spirit bone. Yan herself points out the disagreement 13 16.
