Background / History
Former leadership and seclusion
Yun Shan previously led the Misty Cloud Sect before Yun Yun succeeded him. He and Queen Medusa had fought for years while both were peak Dou Huang cultivators. By the time of Xiao Yan’s Three-Year Agreement, Yun Shan is in seclusion on the sect’s back mountain 18 70 98.
Intervention after the Three-Year Agreement
After Xiao Yan defeats Nalan Yanran, Yun Leng attempts to detain him over Mo Cheng’s death. When Hai Bodong and Ling Ying intervene, Yun Leng summons Yun Shan with a whistle. Yun Shan accepts Yun Leng’s account and orders Xiao Yan to remain at the sect until the matter is resolved 17 18.
Yun Shan offers to release Xiao Yan if the two Dou Huang protectors can withstand three of his moves, then forces their combined defense into retreat. Shen Shihuang intervenes and proposes that both sides withdraw. Although reluctant to antagonize another Dou Zong, Yun Shan refuses to risk appearing weak before the Imperial Capital 18 19.
Shen Shihuang destroys Yun Shan’s wind techniques, knocks him into the mountainside, and eventually pins him beneath his foot. Faced with another Brahma Dragon-Subduing Seal, Yun Shan yields and allows Xiao Yan’s party to leave 19 20.
Conflict with Mountains and Rivers Academy
The academy’s recruitment campaign threatens the sect’s dominance. Yun Shan initially questions whether its students can really become Dou Zong experts, but his elders point out that even the alliances formed there could endanger the sect. He is particularly concerned that Xiao Yan’s talent will secure him admission 68.
Accompanied by Protector Wu, Yun Shan intercepts the ship carrying Queen Medusa and young Snake-People Tribe members toward the academy. Li Bufeng knocks him back, nearly destroys the fleeing Protector Wu with a finger attack, and exposes the outside assistance behind Yun Shan’s breakthrough. Yun Shan is left injured and increasingly worried about Xiao Yan’s possible connection to the academy 69 70 71.
Return to power and attack on the Mite’er Family
Yun Shan removes Yun Yun from office and retakes the Sect Master position. Under his renewed leadership, the sect expands aggressively and continues pursuing the Xiao Family, damaging its reputation throughout the empire 94 99.
He orders the Mite’er Family’s destruction for sheltering surviving Xiao Family members. Despite dismissing Xiao Yan aloud, he privately fears that the young cultivator will eventually surpass him. The attack fails when Xiao Yan returns and kills the sect’s two attacking Dou Huang experts 94 95 96.
Wedding scheme and final battle
After Shen Shihuang visits the sect and exposes its connection to outside forces, Yun Shan summons Gu He. He arranges Gu He’s marriage to Yun Yun to obtain the sixth-tier alchemist’s support and exploit Yun Yun’s relationship with Xiao Yan. The invitation gives Xiao Yan only until the following day before the ceremony 98 99.
The scheme unravels when Yun Yun questions her teacher’s involvement in the Xiao Family’s suffering and Gu He refuses to remain his pawn. Shen Shihuang then defeats Yun Shan again, deliberately leaving him alive for Xiao Yan 100 101.
Blood Mist Venerable’s arrival restores Yun Shan’s confidence, and he attacks Xiao Yan directly. Despite being a three-star Dou Zong, he cannot decisively overcome Xiao Yan’s Heavenly Flames and strength-enhancing secret technique. After Yao Lao is captured, Xiao Yan unleashes a three-colored fire lotus, destroys Yun Shan’s defense, and follows with Eight Extremities Collapse. Yun Yun’s plea for mercy does not prevent Yun Shan’s death 102 103 104.
Personality
Yun Shan usually presents himself as calm and authoritative, treating his demands as justified by his strength. His concern for the sect’s prestige overrides his initial reluctance to fight Shen Shihuang: he believes retreat would make the Imperial Capital regard him as weak 18 19.
His ambition becomes increasingly ruthless after he resumes leadership. He targets families that protect his enemies and uses his own disciple’s wedding as a political weapon. His contempt for Xiao Yan masks a clear recognition of the younger man’s talent and fear of his future growth 94 95 99.
