Either strange peaks rose in clusters, strange trees sprawled across the land, or exotic flowers and rare grasses bloomed everywhere.
With clouds and mist curling through it all, it seemed like a land beyond the world.
Yet in such a place, there was one utterly incongruous region. It was pitch-black, like scorched earth, giving the impression that endless flames had once been ignited here and burned for countless ages, until they had seared through the entire land and left it charred black.
There were no strange trees twisting their roots through the ground here, nor were there any magnificent flowers in bloom.
It was black from end to end. The soil was black, the ground was black, and the mountains were black as well. And this black was difficult to describe—not the ordinary black people spoke of, but a deathly, lifeless black, devoid of even the slightest trace of vitality. It hollowed out the mind and instinctively repelled anyone who saw it.
This was where the great canyon lay, at the deepest end of the painting scroll. For tens of thousands of miles around it, everything was like this.
Li Su moved swiftly. Once he had put some distance between himself and the mountain hollow, he immediately accelerated and headed straight for the depths. Thus, in less than half a day, he reached the interior and stepped onto the edge of the charred-black earth.
