If I hadn't advanced to Transcendence, would my life have been treated with just as much disregard as those who'd been chosen for sacrifice?

Kraun understood that, in the eyes of the higher-ups, many things could be sacrificed to achieve their goals.

He couldn't change anything, and there was nothing he could do about it. All he could do was become stronger.

He wanted to be able to decide who lived and died, rather than let others decide whether he lived or died.

"Did I see those two Witchers still in town?" Nick squinted as he tried to remember. "I remember the white-haired one. What was his name again?"

"Geralt. I know them well now. They'd originally planned to spend the winter here," Kraun replied.

"Invite them in and find them a place inside the church. Transcendentalists deserve special treatment, and the town is short on Transcendentalist fighters."

"That was already my plan."

Kraun led the Witcher and his apprentice to the lodgings prepared for them.

"Big brother, what happened? Why is everyone being gathered near the church?" Alan asked, tilting up his small face.

"A powerful demon has appeared in the Andes Mountains. It can release a Gray Fog that makes people lose their way. Ordinary people who stay in the fog will slowly turn into deformed monsters. The Holy Fire burning atop the church's Clock Tower can drive the fog away."

Geralt frowned. "This isn't a solution. Winter is coming, and people will freeze to death outside. Can't the church come up with another way to deal with it?"

Kraun explained, "The church has developed a lantern that can be charged through devout prayer. Its light can drive away the Gray Fog, too. But the lanterns were only developed recently, so mass production will take time."
