Kraun stopped. The newcomer had dropped to one knee, his right hand over his chest. "Sir Knight, thank you for saving Del Smith's life."
He didn't move, accepting the salute without hesitation. Although he had partly been experimenting at the time, the outcome had indeed been that he saved the man.
Without his Talisman, the man's fate would have been no different than to mutate and then be killed.
Noticing that the man's frame was clearly smaller than it had been a few days ago, he stepped forward and helped him up. "You should also thank yourself for having such a strong will."
Del stood and gave a slight bow, smiling. "Without your help, sir, what good would my will have done? I've heard that knights need squires to feed their horses and maintain their armor. I was wondering if there might be a chance for me to become your squire."
The man smiled bashfully and continued, "I'm a blacksmith from a nearby village. I dare say my forging skills are much better than those of the blacksmith who used to work in town. And after what happened, I've noticed that I'm a lot stronger than I used to be."
Del rolled up his sleeves, showing off the muscles in his arms. The setting sun cast an orange glow over him.
What an interesting fellow. Even in such difficult circumstances, he was looking for a chance to get ahead. That was a fine quality in itself.
Kraun couldn't help recalling how he had tried to convince Nick to let him become a Crusader.
He extended his arm, palm upright and facing the man. "Come on. Punch my hand with all your strength. If I'm satisfied, I'll consider your offer."
"Okay!" Del replied eagerly. He hadn't expected to get this opportunity.
