Lu Heng had only been controlling Starlight for two and a half hours.
She had already cast all her questions aside and focused on the battle before her.
For superhumans, this was merely an appetizer.
But right then—
Lu Heng's phone rang.
He answered it. "I'm busy. Don't disturb me."
Annie was uncomfortable lying down, so she turned over onto her stomach.
A few seconds later—
The phone rang again.
"Damn it, do you believe I'll blow your head off?"
Lu Heng answered the call, and Starlight nearly let out a breath of relief.
"Guardian, I know reproduction is crucial to the development of human civilization. The heat generated in that instant produces a great deal of high-energy protein, but what we need right now is powerful torque!"
The caller caught Lu Heng by surprise. It was Queen Maeve.
"Your ability to organize language is comparable to that of an adult bicycle. I'm in a very bad mood right now, and I'm about to explode. Do you understand?"
Faint screams came through from Queen Maeve's end.
There were also Homelander's occasional attempts at reassurance, though his tone made it clear that he was already struggling to restrain his laser eyes.
The two of them seemed to be carrying out a rescue operation.
"There's a job I need you to handle."
Maeve summarized it briefly.
"Does it pay?"
"Uh... you'll gain the gratitude of nearly two hundred people, as well as my personal friendship."
"No. I've got a deal worth several hundred million that's about to go down the drain. I don't have time to chat nonsense with you."
Lu Heng hung up.
Starlight pressed a hand against Lu Heng's shoulder, golden light flickering in her eyes.
"Maeve doesn't call easily. She must have something urgent."
"I told you, it's a deal worth several hundred million..."
Less than two seconds later, the phone rang again. Lu Heng was just about to turn it off.
Then he saw that it was Homelander.
He answered.
"Hey, brother, help us!"
No way, Homelander!
It had only been a few hours. How had he become this pathetic?
"Brother, you're Homelander. What problem could there possibly be that you can't solve?"
Lu Heng was still in the mood to chat, while Homelander on the other end was frantic enough to turn to ash.
"Come quickly! We're on a plane, and terrorists have hijacked it!"
"Are these terrorists all Supermen? They dared hijack your plane?"
Maeve's voice sounded beside Homelander.
"Stop fucking talking and get over here!"
"There are children here! If you can save them—"
"I'll do anything you want!"
Lu Heng's eyes lit up.
Oh? Anything?
Lu Heng leaped from the apartment balcony. A sonic boom exploded behind him as he instantly arrived thirty thousand meters in the air.
At Mach thirty, it took him less than twenty seconds to lock onto the target.
A Boeing 767.
It was rapidly falling toward the Atlantic Ocean.
The left engine had completely died, while the right one was belching black smoke and barely still running.
The cockpit at the nose had been sliced open, and every instrument on the flight deck was ruined. This was obviously Homelander's handiwork.
The entire fuselage was shaking violently. Lu Heng slowed down, hovered beside the plane, and used his x-ray vision to peer inside.
One hundred and thirty-seven passengers were in a state of extreme terror.
Most were curled up in their seats. In first class lay the corpses of two terrorists.
What should have been an effortless rescue operation had somehow been turned into this mess by Homelander.
Homelander and Maeve stood together.
Maeve wanted Homelander to lift the plane, but he had no point of leverage in midair. Unlike Lu Heng, he had no biological force field. One wrong move, and he would punch through the aircraft like it was tofu, leaving a huge hole in it.
The wind howled.
Like a god, Lu Heng tore open the cockpit door and slipped inside.
He turned and welded the cockpit door back into place.
It was the equivalent of farting after taking off his pants, but he was more than happy to show off before an audience.
"Brother! You're here!"
Homelander looked delighted when he saw Lu Heng.
Maeve, meanwhile, let out a long breath. With the two of them working together, they should be able to save the plane.
"What's the situation?" Lu Heng asked.
"The control system is dead, the engines are wrecked. This plane is nothing but a pile of scrap metal now," Maeve said quickly.
Lu Heng glanced at Maeve.
"What did you say on the phone just now?"
Maeve froze for a moment.
"Huh?"
"You said you'd do anything I wanted, right? Those were your words."
Maeve's expression turned subtle, and Homelander's face looked strange as well.
"Is this really the time to discuss that?!"
"Of course it is. What if I remembered wrong? Say it again."
Homelander hurriedly tried to stop him. "Hey, brother, maybe you don't know this, but Maeve and I used to be together. You know... and don't you already have Starlight?"
Lu Heng told Homelander to calm the passengers, then crossed his arms and looked at Maeve.
Maeve gritted her teeth.
The plane was still falling, and its altitude had dropped to six thousand feet.
Inside the cabin, the two little girls were watching them.
"Yes! I'll do anything! Hurry up and save them!"
"Your words, not mine."
Lu Heng smiled.
Then he turned and flew out through the hole in the cockpit.
Homelander leaned closer. "You got her to agree?"
Maeve gave an irritated snort.
"You two are birds of a feather. Neither of you is any good!!"
Lu Heng flew directly beneath the plane and adjusted his posture. His biological force field expanded outward from the surface of his body.
It covered the entire aircraft, and the plane's descent began to slow.
Lu Heng felt as if he were holding up a leaf.
The little girl by the window pressed herself against it and saw the scene below.
A black figure was holding up the plane, looking completely relaxed.
"Oh my God!"
Something even Homelander couldn't do had been achieved so easily by Guardian?
More and more people pressed themselves against the windows to watch.
Maeve and Homelander were no exception.
"Didn't you say you couldn't lift the plane? Why can he do it?"
Homelander looked baffled too.
"I don't know! Logically, at that angle of force, he should punch straight through the plane!"
"Bullshit!"
Maeve cursed under her breath.
"Really! Do you think I never tried before? My body is strong enough to easily pierce through a fighter jet. I don't know how he's doing it either!"
Homelander felt like he had been unfairly blamed for nothing.
He should have just let the plane crash. At least then Maeve wouldn't think he was slacking off.
"Guardian!! It's Guardian!!"
Someone shouted.
Then everyone began cheering.
At the very least, they weren't all thanking God.
