Background / History
After ten thousand years of development, Shrek Academy grew from an academy into the academy-city of Shrek City. It draws talented students from across the Three Great Empires, possesses a formidable faculty, and holds influence described as surpassing that of the former Spirit Hall. For qualified spirit masters, it is considered the preferred academy on the continent 9 11 293.
The academy is located at the junction of the Douling, Heavenly Soul, and Star Luo Empires, near the Star Dou Great Forest. It remains independent of all nations and is not governed by an imperial power; Shrek City itself is a major trade center between the former Douluo Three Kingdoms 293.
Shrek's tradition has emphasized martial-soul cultivation over soul guidance devices. Many of its elders and students view soul tools as a temporary advantage, believing that a Spirit Saint-level soul master will defeat a soul engineer in a one-on-one battle. This leaves Shrek comparatively weak in soul guidance master cultivation despite its prestige in training soul masters 9.
Campus and Organization
Sea God Pavilion
Sea God Pavilion, located on Sea God Island at the center of Sea God Lake, is the academy's true core. It is home to the academy's senior elders and serves as the site of their highest-level meetings 190 191.
A confidential underground world beneath the pavilion contains 108 cultivation rooms suited to different martial-soul environments. Inner Court disciples ordinarily receive one opportunity for deep meditation there 216.
Academic Divisions
Shrek Academy is divided by Sea God Lake into the Outer Academy and Inner Academy. The Outer Academy contains the Spirit Department and Soul Guidance Department 293.
| Area / System | Details |
|---|---|
| Spirit Department | Occupies most of the academy's color-coded teaching buildings. Its reputation and rigorous training form the foundation of Shrek's standing as a soul master institution 294. |
| Soul Guidance Department | Uses gray teaching buildings and accounts for roughly one-third of the academy's buildings 294. |
| Inner Academy | Its students wear red uniforms, while the detailed layout of its grounds is withheld from ordinary maps 293 294. |
| Soul Fighting Arena | An enclosed oval arena that accommodates roughly 10,000 spectators; Outer Academy students use it for sparring and arranged challenges 294. |
Advancement System
Shrek uses annual assessments based on survival of the fittest; only students strong enough to meet the standard remain enrolled 294.
- Internal advancement — Upper-year Outer Academy students may take the Inner Court advancement assessment. Passing grants Inner Court disciple status 294.
- External advancement — Students from other academies require a recommendation letter before attempting the Inner Court assessment 294.
- Difficulty — External candidates rarely pass; in many years, no outside student enters the Inner Court 294.
- Exchange students — Sun Moon exchange students receive special arrangements, including Inner Academy instruction twice weekly and recurring chances to pass an Inner Academy assessment 293 297.
Educational Culture
- Shrek emphasizes strength, practical combat, and continual assessment as the basis for advancement 294.
- The academy promotes a powerful institutional identity centered on Shrek's honor, particularly among its tournament teams 166 167.
- Its campus commemorates the Golden Iron Triangle and the first-generation Shrek Seven Devils with statues in Shrek Plaza. A Shrek teacher identifies Tang San as the Sea God and credits him with protecting Shrek and the Three Great Empires during the Battle of Jialing Pass 298.
Story Role / Major Arcs
All-Continent Advanced Soul Master Academy Soul Fighting Tournament
Shrek enters the tournament as its longstanding champion. Since the tournament's founding, its representative team has won repeatedly, and other academies generally regard encountering Shrek as an almost certain elimination 84 101.
Before the tournament, four of Shrek's official team members are killed and six severely injured during an encounter with an Evil Soul Master, despite Xuan Zi's protection. The academy therefore arrives with only three nineteen-year-old main-team members and seven reserve members under fifteen, accompanied by only one Soul King-level teacher rather than its usual high-level escort 101 191.
- Shrek's Reserve Team defeats Tianling Advanced Soul Master Academy in five minutes. Its leading youth reveals six one-hundred-thousand-year soul rings, shocking the audience and rival teams 102.
- Against Zhengtian Academy, Shrek continues fielding its Reserve Team despite Zhengtian having three Soul Kings. The reserves sustain serious injuries before Huo Yuhao reveals his Ice Empress martial soul 116.
- After some official members recover, Shrek reveals two six-ring Soul Emperors. A White Tiger Soul Emperor overwhelms Douling Royal Soul Master Academy largely alone, restoring Shrek's standing among the tournament's strongest teams 121 122.
- Shrek reaches the grand final against Sun Moon Royal Soul Master Academy despite its depleted roster 140 143.
Final Controversies and Defeat
During the grand final, Shrek invokes a special tournament privilege earned through its past championships to register two additional contestants at the last moment. The Tournament Committee rules that the late additions are permitted under Shrek's special registration rights 165 166.
Shrek's coach Wang Yan also arranges for Huo Yuhao to provide Spiritual Detection and Sharing assistance to Bei Bei during the individual elimination round. The assistance gives Bei Bei an advantage against Li Yan, but a later live demonstration confirms the cheating accusation 167 171.
The resulting penalties include:
- Shrek is declared the loser of the affected first-round match, though it is allowed to continue competing 172.
- Bei Bei receives a lifetime tournament ban 172.
- Huo Yuhao is suspended 172.
- Wang Yan is expelled and banned for life from participating in the tournament; academies employing him risk losing tournament eligibility 172.
Sun Moon Royal Soul Master Academy ultimately wins the tournament championship, ending Shrek's championship run. The tournament losses, cheating case, and injuries lead Shrek's Sea God Pavilion to review the academy's failures and reputation damage 212 191.
Student Exchange Program
Following the tournament, Shrek initiates negotiations for a student exchange with Sun Moon Royal Soul Master Academy. Mu En views the defeat as a reason for Shrek to reconsider its reliance on its former reputation and adapt to the growing importance of soul tools 212.
The negotiations are tense due to Shrek's actions during the tournament. Shrek ultimately agrees to concessions, including three ten-thousand-year soul bones and access for Sun Moon students to the underground cultivation world. The exchange is scheduled to begin two years later and last two and a half years 217.
When the exchange begins, Shrek receives Sun Moon students including Su Luoheng, Xiao Hongchen, Meng Hongchen, Nana, and other Practical Control Soul Guidance Department students. Shrek supplies them with handbooks, maps, residences, combat testing, and access to Inner Academy instruction and assessments 292 293 294.
Relationships
- Sun Moon Royal Soul Master Academy — Shrek's principal tournament rival and later exchange-program partner. Their rivalry culminates in Sun Moon's tournament victory and subsequent negotiations conducted from a position of strength 84 212 217.
- Three Great Empires — Shrek is formally independent from them, despite being situated at their junction and holding significant continental influence 101 293.
- Tournament Committee — Granted Shrek a special late-registration privilege due to its repeated championships; later investigated and penalized Shrek's team for cheating 166 171 172.
- Mu En — Sea God Pavilion Master who convenes the academy's post-tournament review and supports reform through the exchange program 191 212.
- Yan Shaozhe — Dean of the Spirit Department and a principal representative in negotiations with Sun Moon Royal Soul Master Academy 212 214 292.
- Xuan Zi — A ninety-eighth-rank Super Douluo and senior Shrek figure whose actions during the tournament contribute to the academy's weakened negotiating position 211 212.
- Huo Yuhao — Reserve Team member whose Spiritual Detection and Sharing is used in the confirmed cheating incident; later selected as one of Shrek's exchange students 171 217 292.
