Background

Shizune's parents died during wartime after their squad captain secretly executed them rather than evacuate them for treatment. Their injuries had been minor and survivable, leaving Shizune with lasting trauma surrounding wounded comrades and violence. The captain was later stripped of his ninja status and imprisoned, but this did not ease her loss. 36

Tsunade recognized Shizune's medical talent and took her as a disciple, enabling her to become a jonin through medical ninjutsu despite her reluctance to fight. Shizune has remained at Tsunade's side for roughly twenty years and serves as her assistant. 30 36 46

Shizune initially views Dan as a rival for Tsunade's attention. After Dan proposes that becoming Tsunade's disciple would make him her junior brother, she agrees to accept him into the household. 31

Medical Contest

As part of Dan's entrance test, Shizune prepares to spar with him, only for him to demand a contest of medical ninjutsu instead. She considers the challenge reckless due to her years of training under Tsunade. 32 33
