Background / History

Shikaku was known in Konoha as a member of the Nara Clan and was described as belonging to the village's highest-IQ clan. He knew Minato Namikaze and encountered the infant Yin Xiang during Kushina's outing through the village. 4

The Third Hokage later compelled Shikaku to lead a special one-student class for Yin Xiang. Though reluctant because he disliked trouble, Shikaku accepted out of respect for Minato as well as the Hokage's request. His assignment was to cultivate Yin Xiang into a capable advisor for the future Hokage. 13 14

Shikaku initially refused to teach the Nara Clan's Shadow Manipulation Technique, instead offering instruction in combat logic, tactical maneuvering, and practical battlefield judgment. After Yin Xiang challenged him to prove he could independently develop the clan art, Shikaku agreed to show him the secret scroll if he succeeded. 14

Personality

Shikaku is openly averse to inconvenience, often calling leadership and official duties a “drag.” Despite this, he is dependable when responsibility is placed on him and takes his mentorship of Yin Xiang seriously. 13 34

Yin Xiang's Mentor

Shikaku becomes Yin Xiang's sole team leader after the latter graduates. He explains that his purpose is to prepare Yin Xiang to support the future Hokage, then begins teaching him chakra control, tactical reasoning, and combat fundamentals. 13 14

During their first formal spar, Shikaku counters Yin Xiang's powerful attack with a substitution and stresses that a ninja must never lower their guard. He recommends C-rank missions to build practical experience. 15

Early Missions

Shikaku leads Yin Xiang through D-rank missions, with Yin Xiang using Shadow Clones to help when clients' hospitality leaves Shikaku doing much of the work. He later joins Team 3 and Yin Xiang for a C-rank escort mission, where Yin Xiang exposes and attacks a disguised Orochimaru. 16 17

He continues to guide Yin Xiang through shogi and conversation, acknowledging the youth's growing reputation while encouraging his interest in sealing techniques. 18

Land of Honey Mission

Shikaku accompanies Yin Xiang and Team 3 on what is initially presented as a B-rank escort mission but is revealed to involve a war between the Land of Honey and the Land of Filling. He works with Yin Xiang to assess the enemy's likely forces and supports the decision to proceed. 19 20

He critiques and refines Yin Xiang's plan to weaken the enemy by drawing ninja squads out through posted missions. Throughout the operation, Shikaku provides strategic oversight, cautions Yin Xiang about the dangers of facing jonin, and witnesses his student's first killing. 22 24 25

The “Shikaku” present for much of the mission is eventually revealed to be the Third Hokage in disguise. The real Shikaku remained in Konoha, impersonating the Hokage and handling his duties until the team returned. 28 34
