Background / History

Zabuza defected from the Land of Water's Kirigakure and became a rogue ninja. Kirigakure continues to pursue him, leaving him without a secure place to settle and forcing him to rely on paid work despite the danger. He views the ninja world as hostile to rogue shinobi, arguing that the major villages monopolize legitimate work while condemning those outside their system for how they survive. 35 43 45 46

He works for Gato in the Land of Waves because he and Haku need a place to hide. Although Gato provides shelter, Zabuza rejects being treated as his subordinate; Gato pressures him to complete the mission by threatening to expose his location to Kirigakure. 43 45

Sasuke bargains for a swordsmanship duel against the Water Clone. Zabuza entertains the proposal, acknowledges Sasuke's unusual maturity, and allows him the first three moves. 36
