Background / History

Kakashi is an elite Jonin of Konohagakure and the leader assigned to Team 7 after Sasuke, Naruto, and Sakura graduate from the Ninja Academy. His former teacher was not formally an elite Jonin, but possessed strength Kakashi considers comparable to the Third Hokage’s. 14 16

Before Sasuke’s placement on Team 7, Iruka strongly recommends him to Kakashi as the most talented student he has taught. Kakashi initially receives the claim with skepticism, but quickly revises his assessment after observing Sasuke’s combat ability. 15 26

Sasuke attacks independently, but uses clones, Transformation, Sharingan Genjutsu, and Body Flicker to seize the bells; Kakashi recognizes both Sasuke’s exceptional battle intelligence and the failure of the test’s teamwork objective. 16 23 26

Land of Waves Escort

Kakashi leads Team 7 and Tazuna out of Konoha. He pretends to be killed by four assassin ninja so his students can develop synergy, but Sasuke defeats the attackers before Kakashi reveals himself. 31 32 34

When Zabuza attacks, Kakashi engages him directly but is trapped in Water Prison after expending much of his chakra on Sharingan Genjutsu. He remains trapped while Sasuke confronts Zabuza’s Water Clone. 35 37
