Background and History

At three years old, Naruto is malnourished and shunned by villagers who associate him with the Nine-Tails. When shopkeepers chase him over stolen food, Uchiha Yu pays for it and declares him under Uchiha protection. Yu takes him to an Uchiha-run restaurant, arranges free meals for him, and brings him home 94 95. Mikoto’s care helps Naruto feel welcome, though he is initially hesitant to impose on the family. Sasuke first reacts with jealousy; after arguing and wrestling, the two begin to warm to each other 96.

Years later, Naruto is healthy and a leading Ninja Academy student. Yu has publicly revealed his identity as the Fourth Hokage’s son, and discrimination against him is no longer tolerated by the Military Police Force 130 131. Naruto recruits Sasuke and Hinata for the Chunin Exams, hoping to prove their strength to Yu 131. During the exams, the three face monsters and traps created by Yu’s formations 148 149.

Appearance

Naruto’s appearance changes markedly after entering the Uchiha household:

• As a young child: Malnourished, with a slight build but round cheeks 94 95.
• Later: Blond-haired, healthy, and said to closely resemble the Fourth Hokage as a child 131.

Personality

Naruto initially longs for affection and fears that even a new friend might hate him. He quickly grows attached to Yu, whom he calls “big brother” 95. As he grows older, he is cheerful and competitive with Sasuke, but can still be trusting enough to fall for a scam 131 133. He shows concern for Hinata during the Chunin Exams 149.

Abilities & Skills

Nine-Tails Cooperation

Naruto develops a close partnership with Kurama, who can accompany him outside his body or appear as a summoning beast 131.

• Kurama can join Naruto on the battlefield; the two also bicker casually 131 139.
• Naruto can combine his chakra with Kurama’s to create multiple Nine-Tails shadow clones 188.
• In a later battle, Kurama merges with Naruto to form an orange-yellow chakra covering 189.

Ninjutsu and Sage Mode

• Rasengan: Naruto learns Jiraiya’s techniques rapidly and can vary the size of a Big Ball Rasengan in his hand 138.
• Shadow Clone Technique: He creates large numbers of clones across the sea during a later fight 289.
