As the wide castle gates slowly creaked open, Nalant rode out alone, heading quickly toward the east.
Traveling alone like this didn't align with noble protocol, but unfortunately, Nalant's only squad of guards had already been dispatched to Wheat Leaf Village.
As luck would have it, the location where the Elemental Sprite appeared wasn't far from Wheat Leaf Village, so safety shouldn't be a major concern.
Following the Radar Minimap, Nalant arrived near the red dot's location after a little over ten minutes.
"Fifty more meters to go."
The system's Radar Minimap was truly miraculous; as Nalant neared the target, the map zoomed in, allowing him to pinpoint the Sprite's exact location.
Tying his horse to the roadside, he held a torch in one hand and drew his longsword with the other, stepping directly off the dirt path.
He hacked through the thorny bushes blocking his way, and soon the path opened up into a small clearing.
In the center of the clearing sat a small pit half a meter wide, with wisps of heat still rising from it.
"Found it!"
Nalant stepped forward with delight, seeing a meteorite the size of two fists, glowing with a faint red hue, lying in the pit.
He tapped the meteorite gently with his sword.
Crack!
With a few crisp sounds, the outer shell shattered, revealing the little thing inside—the most precious and magical Elemental Sprite in this world.
The Sprite emitted a faint purple glow, its round, chubby body featuring nothing but a pair of tiny eyes and a small mouth.
"It's actually a purple Sprite!"
The Sprite was still fast asleep, so Nalant sheathed his sword and picked it up with extreme care.
Though the Sprite glowed, its body wasn't hot; it felt warm and soft.
Nalant quickly pulled a small porcelain bottle from his robes, poured a bit of powder onto his finger, and held it to the little creature's mouth.
This was powder ground from the Tulip medicinal herb, one of the Elemental Sprites' favorite foods.
As Nalant's finger touched its lips, the little creature, eyes still tightly shut, subconsciously opened its mouth and licked it with its tongue.
"What a glutton! Smelling something delicious even before waking up!" Nalant couldn't help but chuckle.
Smacking its little lips after tasting the medicinal powder, the creature didn't hesitate. It opened its mouth wide, revealing two tiny front teeth, and bit down hard on Nalant's finger.
"Sss!"
Nalant gasped, enduring the pain as he watched the Sprite swallow the medicinal powder mixed with his blood.
Hum!
Once the Sprite finished consuming the blood, its body suddenly erupted with a brilliant purple light. The light rippled outward like a wave, and then the little creature slowly opened its eyes.
"Migu! Migu!"
The moment it opened its eyes, the little creature looked at Nalant with its large, watery eyes. Simultaneously, a wave of intimate mental fluctuation appeared in Nalant's mind—the mental contract between him and the Sprite.
Though the little creature couldn't speak, it could convey its joy, anger, sorrow, and happiness to Nalant through these mental fluctuations.
"I really hate to sell it!"
Looking at the Sprite that shared a mental connection with him, Nalant felt a pang of reluctance to trade it for gold coins. But without gold, how could he resolve the crisis looming in a week?
"Burn her! Burn her!"
Just as Nalant was struggling with his decision, shouts suddenly erupted from outside the woods.
"What's going on? Why are serfs making such a racket in the wild in the middle of the night?"
Nalant frowned slightly, tucked the purple Sprite into his robes, and headed back toward the dirt path.
As soon as he returned to the path, he saw a large crowd of people approaching with torches from a hundred meters away.
"Burn her! It's this Daughter of Misfortune who brought the Dark Creature tonight! If she doesn't die, she'll bring disaster upon us soon!"
"That's right, burn her! Let the Lord burn her!"
"A Daughter of Misfortune?"
Nalant finally understood what was happening from their shouts.
A "Daughter of Misfortune" was an existence feared by everyone in this world, from kings and nobles down to commoners and serfs.
Because a Daughter of Misfortune brought bad luck and disaster to everyone around her.
Usually, after a meteor shower, one of three things happened.
The first was that there was nothing inside, just an ordinary meteorite.
The second was that the meteor shower birthed an Elemental Sprite, bringing great wealth to whoever found it.
The third was the deadly one: the meteor shower hid a terrifying Dark Creature.
For some unknown reason, these "Daughters of Misfortune" were like beacons for Dark Creatures. Whenever they were within a three-mile radius, the falling meteors would inevitably contain Dark Creatures, and often the number of creatures would surge, threatening an entire territory.
One could imagine how lords felt when a Daughter of Misfortune appeared nearby, and what the commoners thought.
Under such circumstances, there was an iron law in this world—the Daughter of Misfortune must die!
Once a Daughter of Misfortune appeared, she had to be sent to the stake immediately.
"Who's there!" Just then, the crowd ahead spotted Nalant. The man leading them was none other than Nalant's guard captain.
"It's me!" Nalant mounted his horse and replied in a deep voice.
"My Lord! Why are you out in the wild alone so late at night?" Recognizing Nalant's voice, the guard captain, Quick, was startled and hurried over.
"I heard there were two Dark Creatures in Wheat Leaf Village, so I came to investigate. What is going on here?"
"My Lord, a 'Daughter of Misfortune' appeared in Wheat Leaf Village. Perhaps she is the one who drew the Dark Creatures here tonight!" Captain Quick replied respectfully.
"Take me to see her!"
"The Lord has arrived!"
"Greetings, my Lord!"
"Greetings, my Lord!"
Quick held a torch and led Nalant toward the crowd. At his announcement, the serfs knelt one after another, offering their respectful greetings.
"Rise!" Nalant commanded the serfs.
"My Lord, this girl is the 'Daughter of Misfortune' found in Wheat Leaf Village. Her name is Vivian."
Taking advantage of the moment, Captain Quick brought a girl with her hands and feet bound before Nalant's horse.
The Daughter of Misfortune looked only fifteen or sixteen years old.
She was thin and gaunt, wearing nothing but a patched linen dress, and she didn't even have shoes.
A girl of this age would still be a flower in a greenhouse in his previous life, her beautiful life just beginning, but in this world, she would be sent to the stake in a moment.
"Quick, how did you determine she is a Daughter of Misfortune?" Nalant asked after observing her for a moment.
After a Daughter of Misfortune awakened, there were usually obvious physical changes. However, because some of the original owner's memories were lost during his soul-transmigration, Nalant hadn't noticed anything unusual at first glance.
"My Lord, it's her eyes!" Quick didn't overthink it and answered casually. After answering, he barked at the girl, "Look up! Let the Lord see your eyes!"
The frail girl trembled and slowly raised her head.
Then, Nalant indeed saw a golden ring-shaped pattern around the girl's brown irises.
If this were his previous life, he might have thought it was a fashionable girl wearing colored contact lenses, but here, it was damning evidence of her status as a "Daughter of Misfortune."
"My Lord, should we take her back to Wheat Leaf Village for disposal now? If we delay, she might bring misfortune to the territory!"
As natives of this world, neither the serfs nor Captain Quick felt any pity for the Daughter of Misfortune.
Because she was the source of disaster, and the "disposal" Quick spoke of meant burning her at the stake to send the misfortune back to hell.
"Ding! Daughter of Luck discovered. System Codex has automatically recorded one Daughter of Luck. Please check the detailed information, Host!"
But just at that moment, the system's notification sounded in Nalant's mind.
A Daughter of Luck?
Nalant was surprised and immediately opened the system to check.
'Dark Creatures are bloodthirsty and powerful beings. Every appearance of a Dark Creature brings bloodshed and disaster!'
'However, the Creator is fair. Where there is a dark side, there is a light side. The light side is the powerful Daughter of Luck!'
'They possess various magical talents and are the key to restraining Dark Creatures!'
When Nalant opened the System Codex, he was shocked by the changes.
The System Codex had transformed into an ancient, exquisite, and heavy tome, and the first page revealed unbelievable information.
To further confirm this, Nalant continued to the next page.
'Daughter of Luck: Vivian (Semi-awakened)'
'Specialty: Archery'
'Special Talents: Precise Perception, Deadly Strike!'
'She is a powerful archer. By the day she grows into a God-Archer, even a Frost Bone Dragon will tremble before her.'
'She is also an excellent general. In her primary awakened state, the archers she leads will master archery within a week, and the soldiers will permanently gain the 10% talent of Precise Perception!'
(Note: In the primary awakened state, the limit for each teaching session is 10 people! The number can be increased after raising the level of awakening!)
This Daughter of Luck is still in a semi-awakened state; her talents cannot be used, and her aura can be detected by Dark Creatures. A potion can be used to complete her primary awakening.
Primary Awakening Potion Formula: One portion of Long Taro Flower, one portion of White Bell Grass, two portions of Silver Shuttle Grass...
