Mito Uzumaki knocked on the door of Toji's residence.
A widow with crow's feet at the corners of her eyes knocking on the home of a Hokage in his prime, full of vigor and high spirits, in the dead of night—of course it was for private matters that could not be discussed with outsiders.
Toji and Chiri received her together in the sitting room.
Looking at the two before her, whose appearances were still youthful, Mito sighed. "You two are still as young as ever."
"If you wished, you could remain young as well," Chiri said. Even after becoming the Third Hokage's wife, she still showed Mito every bit of respect and had not become conceited because of her changed status.
"There is no need. This is the path I chose. Growing old slowly and passing away peacefully will be enough. You have Toji by your side and can preserve your youth. That is a rare blessing."
After a brief moment of melancholy, Mito finally turned to business. She first said to Chiri, "Chiri, I need to speak with the Third alone."
Understanding, Chiri silently left the sitting room.
Mito then untied the Book of Seals from behind her waist, placed it on the table, and pushed it toward Toji.
Toji watched this unfold without the slightest ripple in his heart.
It was both reasonable and expected.
The Book of Seals should have been under the Hokage's control from the start. It was only because he had smeared Tobirama early on, steering him toward darkness, and tirelessly poisoned Hashirama and Mito against him that the legitimate succession of the Book of Seals had been interrupted for a generation.
