Chu Yan was born into the Chu Clan of East Sea City. Before awakening his Martial Soul, he trained his body from age three through running, boxing, and the Hunyuan Stance Technique, while also studying soul beasts, soul-guidance devices, and battle armor theory 2. His mature bearing is partly tied to memories of a previous life, in which he was an orphan 3 7.

At six, he awakened the Yan Divine Weapon: a dark-gold staff covered in ancient patterns. The weapon possesses a master-recognition trait and repelled even his father, Chu Yuntian, while responding to Chu Yan alone 2. The Chu Clan subsequently recognized him as its official heir and resolved to keep the full details of his awakening secret 2 3.

Chu Yan later disclosed to his father that the Yan Divine Weapon could independently condense Soul Rings, allowing him to obtain an exceptionally old first ring without acquiring a soul spirit through normal means 3 6.
