Background / History

At age twelve, Zhang Shuai and his childhood friend Wang Qiang went to a mountain behind Malong Village, where Zhang Shuai was allegedly taken by aliens. He was later found unconscious at the summit; according to his father Zhang Haijun, he no longer recognized his parents afterward and was regarded by the village as foolish. His parents later divorced. 100

During a later period of severe depression, Zhang Shuai became close to Ye Manqiu, a village girl who raised crayfish and crabs. Her companionship and lakeside outings helped him recover over two years, though he later recognized that she had also relied on him for unpaid heavy labor. 17

After being discharged from the hospital, Zhang Shuai discovered that he could recharge his body with electricity. He concealed this change out of fear of being treated as a monster or used for research.
