Background / History

At the Battle of the Two Gods at Jialing Pass, Tang San possessed the coexistence of the Sea God and Asura God divine positions. As the Asura God, he defeated Bibi Dong and Qian Renxue in a single exchange, bound Bibi Dong with Asura Judgment, and nearly killed Qian Renxue after her godhood shattered. 1

A deep red gate interrupted his attack on Qian Renxue. Tang San’s attempt to destroy the gate failed; the resulting backlash sent him and Xiao Wu flying away, shattered his dual-god state, and left him reverted to his Sea God form and unconscious. 1 4

While he remained unconscious, his father Tang Hao entered Teyvat on the mission to escort the Traveler twins and was defeated and sealed by the Sustainer of Heavenly Principles. Tang San later learned that Tang Hao had died in Teyvat, making revenge one of his stated motives for entering the other world. 2 4 43

After awakening, Tang San joined the mission to seize a Gnosis and survive for ten days. He entered Teyvat confident that, as a god, he stood on the same level as the Seven. 43 44

Tang San encountered and defeated an injured Primo Geovishap, then headed for Liyue Harbor while disregarding a strange stone core left behind by the creature. 45 47 Mistaking the floating Jade Chamber for a royal structure built through exploitation, he attacked it without investigating the situation. 48

On the Jade Chamber, Tang San killed several Feiyun Commerce Guild inspectors after misinterpreting Ningguang’s investigation as oppression of civilians. Moon Carver and Mountain Shaper confronted him and initially knocked him into the sea. 49 50

The ocean greatly amplified Tang San’s Sea God power. He retaliated against the adepti with increasingly destructive attacks, forcing Cloud Retainer and Shenhe to intervene; Shenhe temporarily severed his access to the sea by freezing a large section of it. 50

Tang San’s appearance is primarily defined by the divine regalia of his active godhood.

Tang San is initially composed and assured in battle, facing Bibi Dong and Qian Renxue with calm confidence despite their combined attack. 1 His confidence becomes overt arrogance after awakening: he dismisses Teyvat as “a mere foreign world,” assumes he is comparable to the Seven, and considers seizing a Gnosis simple. 43

He is intensely vindictive toward those he believes have humiliated or wronged him. Tang Hao’s death drives his desire for revenge, while being knocked from the Jade Chamber provokes him into escalating his assault on Liyue’s defenders. 43 50 His actions in Liyue also show a tendency to make immediate moral judgments from incomplete information, treating the Jade Chamber investigation as proof of oppression and responding with lethal force. 49
