Background

Shinmoku was born in Konohagakure and was taken to Kumogakure by his uncle, Uchiha Shifangtai, on a spy mission. Shifangtai had avoided the Uchiha clan’s planned coup and brought his remaining family with him; the Uchiha clan was subsequently annihilated while they were away. 1

After six years undercover, Shinmoku’s cover was exposed. He escaped while seriously wounded as Shifangtai stayed behind to delay Killer Bee, Yugito, and Kumogakure jōnin. Before making his stand, Shifangtai entrusted Shinna’s safety to Shinmoku. 1 2

During the escape, Shinmoku awakened a system whose stated purpose was to revive the Uchiha clan. After returning to Konoha, he submitted intelligence reports to the Third Hokage, requested access to the Flying Raijin Jutsu scrolls, and entered the Chūnin Exams using a Shadow Clone to satisfy the three-person team requirement. 1 3

Despite his cynical attitude toward surveillance and village politics, he chooses to protect Konoha when Orochimaru offers him a place in the destruction of the village. He also takes responsibility for younger allies during the Forest of Death, providing supplies, shelter, and guidance while refusing to solve every danger for them. 8 9

He is independent-minded and rejects the idea that the Uchiha clan’s future—or his own life—must be dictated by the clan’s past. This conviction allows him to overcome Ryūchi Cave’s trial of heart. 19
