Background / History

Infiltration of the Chūnin Exams

Before the Forest of Death examination, Orochimaru kills three Grass Village ninjas who passed the written test. Shinmoku identifies him as their killer, completing a system investigation mission, but does not expose him 6.

Orochimaru targets the surviving Uchiha. By the time he confronts Shinmoku, he has already placed the Heaven Curse Seal on Sasuke. He initially considers Shinmoku another potential target, then loses interest because Shinmoku lacks the hatred, obsession, and desperate desire for recognition that he wants to see. Shinna’s eyes appeal to him, but Sasuke remains his chosen target 8 9.

Forest of Death Confrontation

After injuring Anko, Orochimaru intercepts Shinmoku’s group and invites him to help destroy Konoha. He uses Shinmoku’s poor treatment and constant village surveillance as arguments for defection. Shinmoku refuses, and Shinna immediately traps Orochimaru in Sharingan genjutsu while Shinmoku decapitates him 8.

The apparent killing blow does not end the encounter. Orochimaru attacks with sword-bearing snakes, Hidden Shadow Snake Hands, and a giant snake summon. At the shrine, he urges Shinna to kill Shinmoku, presenting the destruction of her bond with her only living relative as a route to greater power. Shinna reads the tablet and leaves without answering him 13.

Ryūchi Cave Negotiation

While traveling toward Konoha disguised as the Kazekage, Orochimaru is intercepted by Shinmoku’s shadow clone. Shinmoku asks for access to Ryūchi Cave rather than attempting to stop the invasion. Orochimaru offers his snake contract scroll and explains the cave’s leadership, contract arrangements, and dangerous Sage Mode trial 18.

Shinmoku refuses to sign through Orochimaru’s scroll because he fears deception. Orochimaru nevertheless supplies Ryūchi Cave’s general location, parting with the remark that he hopes Shinmoku dies there 18.

Orochimaru maintains his Kazekage disguise at the finals, exchanging courteous but barbed remarks with the Hokage.
