Background / History

Wang Xiaogang initially acts as a wealthy, burly class bully. His family operates a timber business, and several classmates follow him for free meals and drinks. Alongside Li Wei, he publicly mocks the withdrawn Su Ke by suggesting that he matches the description of the campus “sex fiend.” He tries to humiliate Su Ke by lifting his chin, but Wei Lan stops him and calls out his refusal to confront the thugs at the school gate. 7

When Wei Lan is surrounded by three hoodlums, Su Ke asks Wang Xiaogang to help. Wang Xiaogang refuses, warns that the thugs might carry knives, and runs away. 8 He later watches Su Ke defeat the hoodlums with military boxing and is deeply affected by the display. 10

The following day, Wang Xiaogang apologizes for his prior behavior and asks Su Ke to be friends, even offering to call him “Boss.” Su Ke accepts the friendship while rejecting the hierarchy implied by the title. Wang Xiaogang then warns him that the defeated hoodlums may seek revenge. 12
