Ch. 401Challenge Issued
Chapter Summary
Key Plot Points and Events
- Chen Xiao is instructed to refine the origin of a mysterious formation grotto-heaven and take control of it. Wen Che gives him the grotto-heaven’s ice-colored key, though he is visibly relieved when Chen Xiao allows him to keep it.
- Wen Che explains the history of the Chaos Territory in Huashi Heaven. It formed roughly 300,000 years ago after Hanling City was destroyed, while Wen Che entered the area 130,000 years ago and hid inside the grotto-heaven.
- The grotto-heaven is extremely dangerous. Immortals who wandered inside could not absorb its spiritual energy, while Fruit Status Immortals who entered mysteriously died without leaving remains. Wen Che survived only because he could control the grotto-heaven’s origin, though even he was not its true master.
- Chen Xiao retrieves a fragment of the Bridge to Heaven and places it in his Fruit of Merit, where merit power begins reforging it. He and Wen Che then leave the grotto-heaven.
- Chen Xiao learns from Purple Heaven Venerable that the Mystic Yellow Dao Academy ranking battle began ten days earlier. He sends Wen Che to cultivate secretly inside his Golden Immortal Kingdom and hurries back to Mystic Yellow Mountain.
- Chen Xiao discovers that his disciple Lian Shang has killed three Mystic Immortal disciples of the Tianji Sword Sect during the Dao Assembly. Lian Shang is driven by hatred because the sect was responsible for his family’s destruction and his forced massacre of thirty million people in the lower realm.
- Shadow, Chen Xiao’s first Tribulation Disciple, is the other Talisman Dao disciple to advance. Despite being only a True Immortal, Shadow’s movement techniques and talent allow him to compete against stronger opponents.
- Hengxuan, sect master of the Tianji Sword Sect and a late-stage Luo Tian High Immortal, confronts Chen Xiao over Lian Shang’s killings. He demands that Lian Shang be handed over and challenges Chen Xiao to a life-or-death duel.
- Chen Xiao accepts the challenge. The duel attracts the attention of everyone at the Mystic Yellow Dao Assembly and temporarily halts the other competitions.
- Before fighting, Chen Xiao uses a Luo Tian Fruition Talisman, instantly raising his cultivation to the mid-stage Luo Tian Fruition realm. Hengxuan begins by attacking with the Seven-Star Sword Art, wielding an imitation of the Seven-Star Immortal Sword.
- Chen Xiao counters with the Great Coiling Dragon Sword, then uses the Grand Freedom Mysterious Gold Killing Art. Hengxuan blocks it with “Seven Stars Gather Spirits,” prompting Chen Xiao to launch the Never-Retreat Wheel Pearl Hand Seal and Wisdom Seal.
Character Developments
- Chen Xiao: Demonstrates increasing authority and confidence. He protects Wen Che, supports Lian Shang’s revenge, and accepts Hengxuan’s challenge without hesitation. He also recognizes his dependence on external talismans and resolves to strengthen his personal cultivation.
- Wen Che: Becomes Chen Xiao’s subordinate and gains permission to retain the grotto-heaven’s key. His fear of the grotto-heaven’s danger and of heavenly tribulation is emphasized, revealing why he remained hidden for so long.
- Lian Shang: Continues acting on his deep hatred toward the Tianji Sword Sect, killing their disciples without restraint. His relationship with Chen Xiao shows trust: he relaxes only after Chen Xiao promises to face Hengxuan.
- Shadow: Gains recognition as a capable and exceptionally talented disciple despite his relatively low cultivation.
- Hengxuan: Shifts from an angry sect master into an openly aggressive challenger. He underestimates Chen Xiao, believing Chen Xiao’s reputation comes mainly from the aid of stronger allies.
- Purple Heaven Venerable and Mo Qingtian: Act as Chen Xiao’s senior allies and protectors, managing the political tension caused by Lian Shang while criticizing Chen Xiao’s disappearance.
Significant Themes
- Dangerous secrets of the Immortal World: The grotto-heaven and Chaos Territory show that the Immortal World contains ancient powers and mysteries beyond Chen Xiao’s current understanding.
- Revenge and justice: Lian Shang’s killings are presented as repayment for the Tianji Sword Sect’s past atrocities, raising the tension between formal competition rules and personal blood debt.
- Power and reputation: Hengxuan challenges Chen Xiao partly because he doubts that Chen Xiao’s reputation reflects his true strength. Chen Xiao must defend both himself and the prestige of the Talisman Dao.
- External power versus personal cultivation: Chen Xiao uses a powerful talisman to raise his cultivation but recognizes that reliance on such treasures is temporary and that genuine strength must ultimately come from himself.
- Authority and loyalty: Chen Xiao’s treatment of Wen Che and Lian Shang establishes him as a leader who offers protection while allowing his subordinates to pursue their own goals.
