Background / History

Tang San returned to Holy Soul Village after his school studies and told his father, Tang Hao, that he possessed a second martial soul; Yu Xiaogang had recognized it. He continued handling the household work, including cooking, laundry, cleaning, and obtaining wine for Tang Hao. 9

After Tang Hao, drunk and mistaking him for Ah Yin, assaulted him, Tang San left Holy Soul Village the following morning and never returned. In the aftermath, Tang Hao massacred the village's residents to conceal the incident; Old Jack survived only because he had been away from the village. 10

Tang San has memories of a previous life associated with the Tang Sect. In that life, he stole the Mysterious Heaven Skill and other secret manuals by the age of nine or earlier, spent twenty years recreating hidden weapons, and was forced to jump off a cliff at twenty-nine. His knowledge of these techniques carries over into his present life, where he hopes to rebuild the sect. 49 149

He is the son of Ah Yin, the Blue Silver Emperor, and has inherited the bloodline of a hundred-thousand-year Soul Beast. Tang Hao knows this heritage but nevertheless considers the Clear Sky Hammer more important than Tang San's first martial soul for confronting Spirit Hall and fulfilling his expectations. 58

Following Shrek Academy's destruction, Flender accepts Yu Xiaogang's proposal to place its students and teachers within an established academy. Tang San is persistent and highly goal-driven. He waited outside the Peony Garden for seven days while pursuing Zhao Linchuan and the Crystal Plate, then continued searching after learning that a secret exit may have been used. 21 27 28

He can be calculating and unscrupulous when pursuing something he wants. After Ning Rongrong and Xiao Wu refused to sell or lend him a metal item, he decided to steal it; he later attempted to infiltrate the girls' dormitory and was caught by Zhao Linchuan. 49 51

Tang San is observant and strategically minded in combat. He studies opponents' habits, attack rhythms, and weaknesses, using that knowledge to suppress stronger or more experienced opponents, as demonstrated in his earlier victory over Yu Tianheng. 149

His ambition is particularly focused on cultivation. He seeks an Immortal Herb to elevate his Blue Silver Grass martial soul to the Title Douluo level and hints to Yu Xiaogang that Zhao Linchuan may know how to obtain or cultivate such herbs. 79 99

He is also motivated by wealth and the restoration of the Tang Sect. Tang San intends to win an arena championship reward of two thousand-year spiritual herbs and one million Gold Soul Coins, which he views as seed capital for rebuilding the sect. 149

Tang San can harbor intense and violent grudges. After recovering from his injuries, he repeatedly attempts to assassinate Ma Hongjun. He suppresses his murderous intent out of respect for Yu Xiaogang, and Oscar later persuades him to abandon it under Flender's orders. 95

Despite his confidence in his talent, prolonged failure can undermine his self-belief. More than half a year without advancement at level 31 leads him to question whether Blue Silver Grass is truly a useless martial soul. He responds by resolving to cultivate the Clear Sky Hammer rather than continue losing time to successive bottlenecks. 190 191

He remains strongly deferential to Yu Xiaogang. When his teacher refuses to explain his lineage, Tang San accepts the delay despite his lingering doubts and turns his attention toward proving himself in the Soul Master Tournament. 215

Tang San's connection to Ah Yin is foreshadowed when he suddenly feels chest pain and a sense of loss while Zhao Linchuan targets the Blue Silver Emperor. 3 He later returns home, reveals his second martial soul to Tang Hao, and ultimately leaves the village permanently after Tang Hao's abuse. Tang Hao subsequently massacres Holy Soul Village to conceal the incident. 9 10

Crystal Plate Pursuit

After encountering Zhao Linchuan's group in Soto City, Tang San becomes determined to obtain the Crystal Plate. Unable to enter the Peony Garden due to lacking money, he waits outside in hopes of negotiating; he remains there for seven days before realizing he may have been deceived by the use of a secret exit. 20 21 27 28

Shrek Academy and Third Soul Ring

At Shrek Academy, Tang San reaches level 30 and joins the hunt for a third soul ring in the Star Dou Forest. The encounter with the Man Faced Demon Spider leaves him transformed with eight spider lances; Zhao Wuji forcibly removes them, while Zhao Linchuan treats the resulting wounds. 61 62

Following his recovery from later injuries, Tang San repeatedly tries to assassinate Ma Hongjun. Flender calls on Yu Xiaogang to mediate, then attempts to resolve their grudge by secretly drugging both students so Tang San can retaliate in kind. Oscar drinks the wine intended for Ma Hongjun instead and subsequently persuades Tang San to abandon his murderous intent. Tang San then participates in Yu Xiaogang's special training and medicinal baths, sharing a room with Oscar at his own request. 95

Soul Fighting Tournament

Tang San enters the Soul Fighting Arena with Dai Mubai and Oscar. He identifies Ning Rongrong's abnormal improvement as possibly resulting from an Immortal Herb, intensifying his own determination to acquire one. 98 99 He is later overwhelmed by Zhu Zhuqing, surrendering after her Nether Hundred Claws tear open his back. 102

Azure Dragon Academy Exchange

Tang San accompanies Shrek Academy's group to Azure Dragon Academy for an exchange connected to an upcoming arena sparring event. He seeks to gather intelligence on prospective opponents and is determined to claim the championship's two thousand-year spiritual herbs and one million Gold Soul Coins, which he plans to use toward rebuilding the Tang Sect. 149

Despite Meng Shenji's warning not to cause trouble, Tang San's group and Yu Tianheng's group become involved in a clash with Azure Dragon Academy students. Tang San's group initially gains the upper hand. 149 151

During the visit, conflict erupts between the groups. Tang San and Ma Hongjun become targets of Azure Dragon Academy students attempting to restrain them with martial-soul-generated iron chains. 154

Heaven Dou Royal Academy and Cultivation Stagnation

After Shrek Academy is destroyed in the battle against Tianya and Ekao, Yu Xiaogang persuades Flender to seek the resources and tournament eligibility of an established academy. Tang San later trains in Shrek's exclusive Mimicry Cultivation Ground within Heaven Dou Royal Academy. 114 115 190

The improved cultivation environment initially lets him advance from level 30 to level 31 within half a month, earning praise from the academy's three education committee members. He then makes no further progress for more than half a year despite increasing his meditation time and effort. Tang San begins to believe that Blue Silver Grass has reached its cultivation limit and brings his concerns to Yu Xiaogang. His teacher considers switching him to Clear Sky Hammer cultivation, while worrying both about Tang Hao's reaction and about losing the opportunity to prove his theories at the approaching Soul Master Tournament. 190

Tang San formally requests permission to cultivate his second martial soul, reasoning that continued reliance on Blue Silver Grass would merely trap him at one bottleneck after another. Clear Sky Hammer Breakthrough and Exposed Identity

During a later soul hunt in the Sunset Forest, Tang San breaks through his prolonged bottleneck through Clear Sky Hammer cultivation. He obtains three rings with a purple, black, and black configuration, acquires a seven-thousand-year Great Strength Gorilla left arm bone, and reaches the peak of level 38. Yu Xiaogang celebrates his new potential as a tournament dark horse, while Flender remains concerned about the dangers of displaying the Clear Sky Hammer in Spirit City. 214

Dugu Bo and Dugu Yan encounter the group as Tang San finishes his ring fusion. Tang San presents a Blue Silver Grass aura, but Dugu Yan questions his sudden seven-level improvement. Dugu Bo applies spiritual pressure, causing the Clear Sky Hammer to manifest involuntarily. Recognizing the martial soul's significance, Dugu Bo withdraws and leaves with his granddaughter. 214 215

Flender fears that Tang San's identity has been exposed, but Yu Xiaogang argues that Dugu Bo will keep it secret because disclosure could provoke retaliation from the Titled Douluo behind him. Tang San asks about his origins, only for Yu Xiaogang to defer any explanation until after the tournament and make it dependent on his performance. Tang San accepts this and resolves to prove himself. 215

Yu Xiaogang also reveals that he has secured places for Tang San and his companions in the Heaven Dou Royal Team's first team following Dugu Yan and Ye Lingling's departure.
