Chapter 36: Fierce Battle with the Yin Corpses
"Roar!!"
Upon spotting the delicious blood-food, the ghost-fire in the pupils of the two beast-like Yin Corpses flared intensely. With an excited roar, they lunged violently at the four of them.
"Brother Chen! Leave that remaining Yin Corpse to you. We will slay these other two as quickly as possible, then come to your aid!"
With no time for further talk, Situ Kong shouted with a grave expression. He slapped the storage bag at his waist, and a segmented whip-like magical tool flashed with brilliance, leaping into his palm. With a crackling sound, it whipped up gusts of wind, rapidly coiling toward the tiger-lion-like Yin Corpse charging at him.
Han Shuitong and Liu Han also rushed toward the giant ape Yin Corpse on the other side without a word. Light flickered in their hands; Liu Han produced the strange dagger he had used against Chen Lin, while a jade sword with a dark, shimmering green glow appeared in Han Shuitong's palm, its brilliance clearly extraordinary.
Seeing that the three had already engaged, Chen Lin took a deep breath. His gaze flashed, locking onto the remaining gaunt Yin Corpse, and he charged forward without hesitation.
Mid-sprint, he slapped his storage bag, producing two low-grade "Diamond Talismans," which he quickly pressed into his body.
Instantly, a hazy halo of spiritual energy appeared around Chen Lin, shielding his entire body.
These talismans were the most common low-grade variety, the kind most frequently crafted by novices. Although they could only provide a spiritual shield for a short time and had limited defensive power, having something was better than nothing.
The Sea Opening Realm Yin Corpse was shrouded in death energy, making it impossible for Chen Lin to sense its cultivation level. However, the ghost-fire dancing in its eyes—and the way it stood its ground, tilting its head to size Chen Lin up instead of mindlessly charging like other ghosts upon seeing prey—suggested its intelligence had been greatly awakened.
"Fo... food!"
Seeming to discern that Chen Lin's cultivation was truly meager, the gaunt Yin Corpse's rotting lips curled back in a hideous, terrifying grin, and it stuttered out the word "food." Immediately, it hunched forward and, with a strange smile at the charging Chen Lin, lunged as well!
Chen Lin felt a jolt of alarm, realizing this Yin Corpse possessed intelligence and would be difficult to handle, but there was no turning back now.
"Creak... creak..."
The sharp sound was the grinding of the Yin Corpse's teeth. The instinct to feed and the desire to slaughter made it see Chen Lin as a delicious, mouth-watering feast. It couldn't wait to grab him, tear his head and limbs apart, suck his blood, and savor his fresh, tender flesh.
Its face was ferocious, and thick, yellowish, foul-smelling fluid dripped from its rotting lips, making it look like a malevolent ghost. Its sharp nails were like daggers, with bits of flesh from unknown creatures still lodged between them. It whipped up a gust of baleful wind, fierce and swift, aiming to pierce Chen Lin's skull!
This strike brought with it whistling baleful winds and miserable, swirling mists, with faint sounds of ghostly wailing that could chill one's soul!
If it were an ordinary cultivator, seeing this scene would be enough to make them lose their footing, let alone fight back. But was Chen Lin an ordinary cultivator?
"Hmph!"
Chen Lin let out a cold snort, his gaze icy. Perhaps because the Yin Corpse was slightly overconfident, the strike was fast and vicious but lacked any real technique—and that gave him an opening!
Chen Lin remained calm, his feet tracing the Seven Stars pattern, his body moving with his intent like a flurry of illusions! As he surged forward, a faint sound of thunder rumbled—it was the Heaven-grade Immortal Art, Thunder Flash Step, which he had exchanged for at the Immortal Treasury Pavilion!
Although Chen Lin reacted quickly and dodged by a hair's breadth, the air current stirred by the Yin Corpse's strike whipped across his face like a sharp lash, leaving a stinging, burning pain.
It was truly a Sea Opening Realm ghost; even a casual strike left Chen Lin feeling a sense of dread. Yet, he didn't idle. The moment he dodged, his legs lashed out like steel whips, stirring up biting winds and leaving a trail of afterimages as he kicked fiercely at the Yin Corpse's waist!
"Awoo!"
The Yin Corpse was sent tumbling sideways by the force of that thunderous kick, slamming hard into a rock. The rock shattered into pieces, a testament to the power of the blow!
But the Yin Corpse quickly flipped over, stood up, let out a roar, and lunged at Chen Lin again!
Seeing the Yin Corpse charge back as if nothing had happened, Chen Lin was truly shocked. He knew his own strength best; even if it was just a casual strike, it carried far more than a thousand pounds of force.
His legs still felt a hint of numbness, yet the Yin Corpse seemed to feel nothing at all, hiding a formidable defense beneath its gaunt frame!
Watching the Yin Corpse charge again, Chen Lin remained vigilant but not panicked. In truth, he had many more ways to deal with the creature. He could simply bring out the top-grade magical tool, the Mother-Son Void Spirit Sword, and dance with it for a long time. But clearly, Chen Lin intended to keep a low profile, merely stalling the Yin Corpse until Situ Kong and the others finished off the other two.
In a dangerous place like the Demon Prison, he naturally had to keep a few trump cards hidden.
Practicing a mysterious ancient scripture, Chen Lin's internal spiritual energy was pure and vast. He unleashed the Heaven-grade Immortal Art Thunder Flash Step, the Six Prisons Mad Blade, and various martial arts techniques from his past life one after another. Combined with his formidable physical body, every strike was as powerful as thunder and lightning, capable of subduing tigers and dragons. He fought the Yin Corpse to a standstill in the short term, shattering rocks and churning ghost mist wherever they went, drawing the side-glances of the others!
"Haha! Good, Brother Chen truly has hidden depths! Just give us three incense sticks of time, and we can finish off these two Yin Corpses!"
Situ Kong was overjoyed. A smile appeared on the corner of Han Shuitong's mouth, and even Liu Han's expression softened, though his gaze toward Chen Lin grew a hint more grave.
But the good times didn't last. The Yin Corpse seemed to grow truly enraged. With a shrill roar, it leaped backward, breaking away from the fight with Chen Lin. Chen Lin paused, not giving chase, but stood his ground, staring fixedly at the Yin Corpse, ready for anything.
The Yin Corpse tilted its head to stare at Chen Lin, the ghost-fire in its eyes flickering. The fact that it had been entangled for so long by a blood-food it deemed weak was, to it, unforgivable!
"Fo... food... this... ends... now!"
Suddenly, the Yin Corpse grinned hideously, a look of unspeakable, sinister terror. At the same time, it suddenly extended its five fingers, which were as thin as withered wood, and pointed at Chen Lin!
"Whoosh! Whoosh! Whoosh! Whoosh! Whoosh!"
The five fingertips suddenly emitted a whistling wind, and immediately after, five black pillars of energy, each as thick as a finger, shot toward Chen Lin with the speed of a thunderbolt.
These black pillars spat out dark light, accompanied by the sound of tearing wind and chilling baleful intent, as if they meant to slaughter everything in their path!
"Brother Chen, watch out! That's a divine ability! Damn it, this Yin Corpse can actually use simple divine abilities!"
Situ Kong, still fighting nearby, seemed to sense something. He turned his head just in time to see the Yin Corpse fire the five black pillars, and his expression changed instantly.
"What?!"
Chen Lin's face shifted. He wanted to dodge, but the five pillars were simply too fast—too fast for him to react in time!
"Puff! Puff! Puff!"
The sound of flesh being pierced rang out. Chen Lin let out a muffled groan, feeling a wave of intense pain in his chest. He looked down to see five wounds torn into his robes, the skin and flesh mangled and blurred, with fresh blood gushing out!
Fortunately, the Dragon-Elephant Nirvana Art Chen Lin practiced had tempered his body, and it had been further refined by the Essence of Li Fire, preventing the pillars from piercing through him entirely. Even so, the sight drew the startled attention of the other three.
"What a formidable physical body! Even if a sect disciple spent decades tempering themselves with the Hundred Refinements Art, they couldn't reach this level!"
Situ Kong had originally thought Chen Lin would be unable to resist at all and might even perish directly under those terrifying black pillars, but he never expected that Chen Lin would only suffer superficial wounds!
At this moment, he exchanged a glance with the other two, and they all saw the shock reflected in each other's eyes. Liu Han's expression shifted, and the gaze he cast toward Chen Lin was now filled with deep wariness.
The Yin Corpse was clearly taken aback as well, evidently not expecting this lowly ant to have survived that last strike unscathed. However, possessing only rudimentary intelligence, it was thoroughly enraged by Chen Lin. Its ten fingers flickered like spinning wheels, launching a barrage of black energy pillars that streaked across the sky, intent on blasting Chen Lin into smithereens.
Chen Lin's face darkened, his gaze growing colder as he looked at the Yin Corpse. Yet, he chose to restrain himself, opting not to launch a ruthless counterattack but instead weaving constantly to dodge the black beams.
Staring at the black energy pillars that pursued him like soul-reaping specters, Chen Lin remained as cautious as he could, yet he still inevitably sustained several more wounds.
A divine ability of the Sea-Opening Realm? It seems it's nothing more than this. Ordinary disciples of the Xiantian Realm can use magical artifacts to condense spiritual energy into blades or sword light, though I must admit, these black pillars really sting when they hit!
Chen Lin cursed incessantly in his heart while dodging, his disdain for the divine abilities of the Sea-Opening Realm growing. Little did he know, the technique this Yin Corpse wielded was merely the most basic of divine abilities. Even so, it was not something a typical practitioner of the Xiantian Realm could withstand; not everyone possessed a body as tempered and refined as Chen Lin's.
