Chapter Twenty-Seven
The Furnace's wars of expansion had lasted for more than a century. The supernatural forces closer to The Furnace had long since been utterly destroyed.
Thus, in every war, The Furnace would construct teleportation arrays to rapidly send troops to the territories of more distant supernatural forces and launch invasions.
A dazzling white light flashed, and Lynn followed the crowd out of the teleportation array, feeling slightly dizzy.
Once he regained some clarity, he found himself before an endless forest. Enormous trees towered into the clouds, their branches and leaves interwoven as though they had completely sealed off the sky. Sunlight could not penetrate it, and the forest was filled with a gloomy aura.
Groups of Wizard Apprentices emerged from the teleportation array, hoods pulled over their heads and robes draped around them. Beneath the dense shadows, they appeared especially ghostly.
Lynn lowered his head to look at his own robe. Despite being in an unfamiliar environment, the tension in his heart refused to fade.
Before the teleportation, Lynn and the other Wizard Apprentices had already learned the nature of this mission.
The place where they stood was a vast forest known as the Emerald Island Forest.
Viewed from above, one would see lush trees packed tightly together, completely blanketing the earth like a green island floating upon the land, standing in stark contrast to the surrounding terrain.
That was how this forest came to be called the Emerald Island Forest.
Numerous powerful supernatural forces lay hidden around the Emerald Island Forest. The two most famous were the Bitter Heart Sect and Night Shadow Bunker, whose leaders were both Level 3 Great Wizards.
The Furnace Army had once swept through the Bitter Heart Sect and completely destroyed the other forces around the Emerald Island Forest, with Night Shadow Bunker as its ultimate target.
However, only after the Furnace Army pushed deep into the Emerald Island Forest did it realize the severity of the problem.
The Bitter Heart Sect had merely pretended to surrender. Once the Furnace Army had advanced alone into the depths, they directly cut off its retreat.
The Bitter Heart Sect and Night Shadow Bunker joined forces against The Furnace's invasion, successfully trapping the Furnace Army within this dense forest.
Yet the Emerald Island Forest's terrain was complex and dangerous. Not only did powerful Magic Beasts lurk within, but there were also unpredictable natural traps.
As a result, the Furnace Army was not immediately destroyed by the allied forces of the two factions. Instead, it became locked in a prolonged stalemate.
Under such circumstances, the Furnace Army decided to disperse its strength, breaking the whole into smaller units and sending its troops into the forest in batches to wage guerrilla warfare against the enemy.
Lynn and the other Wizard Apprentices had been sent into this forest to support the Furnace Army's operations.
Of course, besides these apprentices, several Official Wizards had accompanied them as well.
"The target is too large. Split up and rendezvous with the main army."
One of the accompanying Official Wizards made the decision and directed everyone to disperse.
Everyone carried The Furnace's specially made tracking method. Even without a leader, they could accurately sense the Furnace Army's direction.
Moreover, most of those who had come along were students of wizards, and their individual abilities were not poor. Even without clear command, the apprentices could operate independently.
Hearing the Official Wizard's words, the apprentices nodded in agreement.
They formed groups of two or three and swiftly disappeared into the dense forest.
Although most of this reinforcement force consisted of Wizard Apprentices, that did not mean everyone was a Level 3 Wizard Apprentice. There were even some Level 2 Wizard Apprentices among them.
Most of these Level 2 Wizard Apprentices traveled with senior brothers or sisters.
As for Lynn, he naturally formed a group with Colin. They stood in a corner, pulling on their robes and lowering their hoods.
As long as they did not speak, they had almost no presence at all.
"Good thing you're already a Level 2 Wizard Apprentice. At least you can cast a spell. Otherwise, this mission would really be hell-level difficulty for you."
Colin sighed, his voice carrying a trace of sympathy.
Lynn nodded helplessly, feeling equally resigned.
He had thought he could cultivate peacefully in the Potion Garden, lying low until he became a Level 3 Wizard Apprentice, or even an Official Wizard, before emerging.
But who would have expected the Black Dragon Witch to directly order apprentices like them into compulsory combat?
"By the way, what type does your Ivgried lean toward?"
Colin knew that the two of them were Nature Wizard Apprentices, so there was little point in discussing the specifics of spellcasting. He instead asked directly about Lynn's type of Seed of Life.
He only knew the name of Lynn's Seed of Life, not its precise function or effects.
"It leans toward defense."
Lynn answered briefly, then continued speaking quietly with Colin.
At that moment, a gentle female voice drifted over.
"Would you two mind if I joined you?"
Neither Lynn nor Colin needed to look up to know that it was Sonia speaking.
Her helpless tone, along with the pretty face revealed beneath her hood, carried a faint but unmistakable helplessness.
After the apprentice force broke into smaller units, most teams consisted of two or three people who already knew one another.
Sonia sadly discovered that the people she could call friends were not wizard students at all, but were still working in the Potion Garden.
For a moment, Sonia could not find any suitable teammates and fell into an awkward situation.
Traveling alone was not particularly appropriate. A team of two or three could at least take turns keeping watch and looking after one another.
But if she were alone, even resting would be difficult to guarantee. Who knew how long it would take to find the main force and reunite with the others?
Yet she could not simply find random people to form a team with. She could not trust strangers with her back.
After considering it over and over, Sonia turned her gaze toward Lynn and Colin.
She was fairly familiar with the two of them, making them viable options. Besides, they were both Rosalind's students, and even combined, their combat strength probably could not match hers.
Even if she had misjudged them and the two tried anything, they would not be able to beat her.
"Oh? Aren't you afraid the two of us will hold you back?"
Seeing Sonia's pretty face, Colin smiled and asked.
"If we can't win, can't we just run? Colin, you're the best at running. As for Lynn..."
Sonia paused, her gaze falling on Lynn. Clearly, she did not understand his strength and still thought he was only a First-Level Wizard Apprentice.
"Not long ago, I just broke through to Level 2 Wizard Apprentice. I have some ability to protect myself now..."
Lynn replied calmly.
"A Level 2 Wizard Apprentice? That's great! Even if you can't beat someone, I can take you with me when I leave."
Hearing this, delight flashed through Sonia's eyes. After becoming a Level 2 Wizard Apprentice, one could draw upon energy particles. It was a tremendous improvement; he was no longer completely useless dead weight.
Lynn and Colin exchanged a glance before finally agreeing to let Sonia join.
After all, their Seeds of Life had limitations, while Sonia had none. If she joined the team, she could effectively increase their combat strength.
Should anything arise, Sonia could deal with it directly. They would have an additional reliable fighter.
