Chapter 5: The Forget-Love Pill?
"Senior, you..."
"Immortal Master, what are you doing?"
Xiao Ling'er and Father Xiao, having witnessed this scene, stared at Bai Lin in confusion. Had it not been agreed that Luo Mu would not be harmed? Why, now that the matter was settled, had he resorted to such measures?
"Do not be nervous. I have merely immobilized him for the time being," Bai Lin said with a faint smile, offering an explanation.
Just as Bai Lin had claimed, the moment the white orb of light entered his body, Luo Mu felt his entire frame cease to obey him. It was as if his body no longer belonged to him, a sensation that left him both shocked and furious.
Is this the gap between a mortal and a cultivator? In the eyes of a cultivator, mortals are nothing more than ants! Though he could not move, Luo Mu's mind remained clear. The scene unfolding before him made him feel the insignificance of a mortal once more, and the helplessness of being at the mercy of a cultivator!
Caught off guard and easily immobilized by Bai Lin, Luo Mu felt shock and rage, but no fear. From the moment his father had departed, Luo Mu had forgotten the meaning of fear. All that remained was an indifference—an indifference that had seeped into his very marrow.
After the initial shock, Luo Mu wanted to see exactly what Bai Lin intended to do to him.
"Do you two truly believe this brat's words? Do you really think he would give up on Junior Sister Ling'er so easily?" Just as Luo Mu sought an answer, Bai Lin's voice reached his ears.
It was clear, however, that these words were directed at Father Xiao and Xiao Ling'er.
"This... Senior, since Brother Luo Mu has already spoken, it means he will no longer associate with Ling'er from this day forward. Ling'er has spent many years with Brother Luo Mu and knows him well; he is a man who keeps his word!" Xiao Ling'er had only just stepped into the Qi Refining stage and had no concept of the true power of other cultivators. In her eyes, Bai Lin remained a figure to be looked up to, and she still harbored a sense of fear toward him. Luo Mu was already pitiful enough, and she was terrified that Bai Lin might harm him.
If that were to happen, Xiao Ling'er feared her conscience would never be at peace.
"Ling'er is right. Little Luo is not that kind of person!" Father Xiao, also familiar with Luo Mu, added quickly.
"Not that kind of person? Are you questioning my words?" Bai Lin's tone revealed clear displeasure.
He could tolerate Xiao Ling'er's skepticism, as she was a fellow cultivator and he had ulterior motives regarding her, but Father Xiao was merely a mortal in his eyes. That a mortal would dare to question him filled Bai Lin with intense irritation.
Father Xiao was shrewd; he immediately sensed the danger and wisely shut his mouth, saying no more.
"This man may speak sweet words, but do you two know what he truly thinks?" Seeing that Father Xiao had fallen silent, Bai Lin felt a surge of triumph. A look of arrogance appeared on his face as he spoke slowly.
"Junior Sister Ling'er is now a true cultivator. What mortal wouldn't want to cling to her? To rise to glory through her status is a windfall any mortal would dream of. As her fiancé, do you really think he would give up so easily?"
"Hmph! Do you think I cannot see through his attempt to use your status for personal gain? I have seen plenty of your kind—base, lowly mortals!"
Bai Lin spoke with relish, but to Luo Mu, the words were grating, like sharp objects scraping against his eardrums. They filled him with extreme rage, and even Father Xiao and Xiao Ling'er looked visibly uncomfortable.
In the eyes of mortals, cultivators had always been supreme beings. They had assumed cultivators were different, but the Bai Lin before them proved that, aside from possessing powers mortals lacked, their hearts were no different.
A cold sneer formed in the depths of Luo Mu's heart, and his reverence for cultivators vanished by more than half.
"Junior Sister Ling'er, for the sake of your future and to ensure you are not pestered by some common mortal, which would hinder your cultivation, you must handle this properly to avoid any future regrets!" Bai Lin, oblivious to the expressions on the three faces, continued on his own.
Without waiting for Xiao Ling'er to retort, Bai Lin reached for the small, exquisite cloth bag hanging at his waist. A flash of white light appeared, and a pill the size of a thumb materialized in his palm.
"Have him take this," Bai Lin said to Xiao Ling'er with a smile, extending his palm toward her.
"What is this?" Xiao Ling'er took the pill, examined it closely, and looked up at Bai Lin with a nervous expression, fearing he might have tampered with it.
"Junior Sister, do not be nervous. This is a first-grade intermediate-tier Forget-Love Pill. It is incredibly precious, as the success rate for refining it is low and the ingredients are hard to find. Many cultivators choose to take the Forget-Love Pill after suffering a heartbreak. Once consumed, it will make you completely forget the person you loved most in your heart. It is truly miraculous!"
"To ensure this man forgets you entirely and never bothers you again, having him take the Forget-Love Pill is the best choice!" Bai Lin explained with a confident, beaming smile.
The Forget-Love Pill?
None of the three had ever heard of such a pill, nor had they imagined such a miraculous medicine could exist. However, as it was a product of the cultivation world, it was not strange that they were ignorant of it, and its miraculous effects were even less surprising.
Holding this thought, and seeing Bai Lin's calm and confident demeanor, Xiao Ling'er was nine-tenths convinced. Father Xiao stood by in silence, lost in deep thought, his mind unreadable.
Luo Mu, unable to move his body, knew nothing of this pill. However, upon hearing its effects, his anger toward Bai Lin deepened. When Bai Lin insisted that Xiao Ling'er feed it to him personally, the rage in Luo Mu's heart transcended mere anger.
"Is what you say true, Senior Bai Lin?" Xiao Ling'er breathed a sigh of relief; as long as Luo Mu's life was not in danger, she was satisfied.
"I am a dignified cultivator; would I lie to you, Junior Sister?" Bai Lin replied, his expression unchanging.
Bai Lin's composure caused the last shred of doubt in Xiao Ling'er's heart to dissipate. Naive and inexperienced, she knew nothing of the malice in human hearts and was easily swayed by his words.
At this critical moment, Father Xiao acted as if he had heard nothing, remaining completely silent and refusing to intervene. Bai Lin was delighted, secretly mocking how sensible Ling'er's father was.
Clutching the Forget-Love Pill, Xiao Ling'er walked toward the immobilized Luo Mu.
Our paths have diverged. Having him take this pill to forget me completely is the best outcome, she thought as she stood before him, looking at his familiar face.
As she slowly brought the pill toward his lips, a chill washed over Luo Mu. Beneath that chill lay a pain that reached into his very marrow.
Surprise, disbelief, sorrow, and irony—a complex array of emotions flickered through Luo Mu's calm eyes. In his profound despair, he could only watch helplessly as the pill entered his mouth, unable to do a thing. It was another reminder of his own weakness.
Yet, the moment the pill touched his lips, the bond between him and Xiao Ling'er was severed forever.
It was not even anger; it was a deep, hollow sadness. Years of affection were utterly destroyed by this single pill. The finality of it was so absolute that Luo Mu found it difficult to accept.
He had lost his father only days ago, and now, the woman who was to be his wife had become a total stranger.
Luo Mu had never dreamed that the woman he had cherished and protected for years would, for the sake of her own future, personally feed him a Forget-Love Pill. What he saw now was reality—the absolute, cold reality of human nature when faced with desire.
Watching as Xiao Ling'er pushed the pill into Luo Mu's mouth, Bai Lin's smile widened. He called out to Xiao Ling'er and led the way out of the room, his gait filled with unbridled triumph.
Xiao Ling'er cast one last deep look at Luo Mu. Her face was etched with intense shame; unable to meet his eyes, she lowered her head and followed Bai Lin closely.
Father Xiao sighed, shook his head, and left the room without a word.
Only after the three had departed did Luo Mu regain his senses, his body finally freed from Bai Lin's control. Though his face remained calm and expressionless, tears streamed down his cheeks, and his half-hidden eyes eventually returned to a state of hollow stillness.
If not for the tear tracks still damp upon his face, no one would have been able to discern his current state of mind.
"Thirty years east of the river, thirty years west; never bully a youth because he is poor! Father, you have already sacrificed your life for your son; how could I bear to let you down in the afterlife? No matter what it takes, I will surely step into the ranks of the cultivators, and I will certainly become an existence that other cultivators look up to!" Gently wiping away the unevaporated tears on his cheeks, Luo Mu spoke with a firm and resolute tone.
"Even if it means death, I will not hesitate! Father, this is the promise I make to you, and likewise, an account I must settle with myself!" After a pause, Luo Mu added once more.
As the words fell, Luo Mu's expression shifted violently. His hands instinctively clutched his lower abdomen as a twisting pain surged from within, turning his face deathly pale and causing cold sweat to pour down his forehead.
"How can this be? Could there be something wrong with the pill?" Recalling that so-called Forget-Love Pill from just moments ago, Luo Mu's complexion turned even more ghastly.
