At night, Ye Yuexin lay quietly alone on the rooftop.
He stared at the starry sky, lost in a daze.
Red Bean still hadn't come by, so it seemed she had been delayed by something. That was fine, though; judging by the current situation, their batch of new Genin would likely be sent to the battlefield to serve as cannon fodder before long.
The night sky of Konoha in the ninja world was truly beautiful. Except for rainy days, the sky was always clear. Moreover, the moon was noticeably larger than it had been in his previous life.
Ye Yuexin felt that he had hit a bottleneck in his cultivation. It wasn't that he lacked ideas, but rather that he lacked relevant data and his knowledge base was insufficient.
Consequently, he had no way to verify many of his theories.
Take, for instance, his favorite throwing knives.
The three knives at his waist and the one empty slot in his holster were the products of his concentrated imagination.
Why say that? Because all three of his knives were completely different.
First was the first blade.
The name of this knife was Body Cutter, and Ye Yuexin's design goal for it was to be indestructible.
After acquiring the Wind attribute, Ye Yuexin began using the sharp nature of wind to nurture it, starting from the tip of the blade.
By now, he had already nurtured more than half of it. One had to realize that Ye Yuexin had spent a full two years nurturing this single, tiny throwing knife.
Even now, when placed in the knife pouch, wisps of sharp aura still leaked out. Fortunately, Ye Yuexin had been suppressing it with chakra the entire time; otherwise, the pouch would have been shredded long ago.
Although it hadn't reached the point of being truly indestructible, Ye Yuexin had tested it, and it cut through ordinary rock as if it were mud. It was effortless and smooth.
Furthermore, it wasn't just the sharpness of the blade.
The throwing technique he had painstakingly developed gave it the invisibility and speed of the wind. Ye Yuexin had stumbled upon this technique while meditating on a cliff. It required a certain understanding of wind, and of course, a wild imagination.
Once thrown, the knife could harness the natural acceleration of the wind. Ye Yuexin hadn't fully grasped the underlying principles, but he had managed to make it work.
Perhaps that was just how things went sometimes—not knowing exactly why one succeeded.
Then there was Ye Yuexin's second knife, which he had only conceived due to the influence of Uchiha Itachi.
To put it bluntly, it was because Ye Yuexin was constantly being controlled by genjutsu.
In truth, because Ye Yuexin possessed the soul of an adult, his resistance to genjutsu was quite high.
Although, given Itachi's current strength, it could only leave him in a momentary trance, no one could say for sure what would happen once Itachi grew stronger.
Thinking of S-rank genjutsu like Tsukuyomi in the future made Ye Yuexin's scalp tingle.
After all, genjutsu was a very common occurrence in the ninja world. Having high magic resistance didn't mean he was completely immune.
With no other choice—since his talent for genjutsu was low and he couldn't learn it—Ye Yuexin decided to practice breaking it.
Thus, his second knife was born: Soul Cutter.
This one was specifically designed to deal with genjutsu.
Ye Yuexin had put the most effort into this particular blade.
Even though he had the imagination to conceive it, he lacked the data to research it.
First, Ye Yuexin had to find a material capable of storing spiritual energy. Given his knowledge base at the time, he was essentially a blank slate, knowing absolutely nothing.
With no other options, Ye Yuexin had to use the most tedious method: testing them one by one.
Edison hadn't known what material to use for a lightbulb filament at first, either; he only succeeded after testing over three thousand materials.
Ye Yuexin figured he could emulate that approach.
As it turned out, Ye Yuexin was luckier than Edison.
He managed to find the right material after testing only a few hundred. Speaking of that process, he had been nearly driven mad by his lack of money at the time.
Buying materials cost money. After school, he would go out to set up a stall. How could the street food of his great China lose to that of the island nation? Business had been quite good. What Ye Yuexin sold was the timeless snack, "grilled cold noodles."
Don't ask how he learned to make them; at the time, in order to practice and improve his business, both he and Red Bean had eaten until they were sick.
Back then, Ye Yuexin had tested almost every slightly hard object he could find. In the end, he even spent two months' worth of savings to buy a diamond slightly larger than a needle tip to test it.
But none of the results were ideal. The diamond, needless to say, was a failure. It couldn't even hold spiritual energy, let alone store it.
Spiritual energy was the foundation of a ninja; after all, chakra was a combination of physical energy and spiritual energy. Thus, Ye Yuexin was quite adept at manipulating it.
At the time, Ye Yuexin had wondered if he should change his approach. After all, there were many paths to take.
But just as he was about to change his plan, he succeeded, quite suddenly.
It was crystal—a substance similar in shape and appearance to a diamond. Ye Yuexin hadn't even intended to test it at first.
Although crystal wasn't very expensive, it looked too much like a diamond, and that so-called diamond had wasted two months of his hard-earned money.
So, Ye Yuexin had been reluctant to buy it from the start. But in the end, he tried it anyway. And he succeeded. It really felt like fate was playing a joke on him.
That's right, Ye Yuexin's second throwing knife, Soul Cutter, was transparent. It was polished from crystal. Although it wasn't as hard as the first blade, it was a lethal trump card. One could tell from its name that Ye Yuexin intended to cultivate it into a blade capable of severing the soul.
He had plenty of ideas and theories, but he had no clue how to implement them yet. So, he would have to wait for the future.
The blade had been transparent like glass at first, but after two years of nurturing, it had turned a sky-blue, translucent color. Looking closely, one could see needle-like points of light wandering inside. It flowed like a galaxy. A close observation revealed a sense of profound mystery.
When kept inside the blade pouch, it was easy to overlook if one didn't look closely.
Next was Ye Yuexin's third blade. The name of this third blade was Void Shatterer. Ye Yuexin's design for this one was for it to erupt from within the body like hidden energy, utilizing the formlessness and tearing power of the wind.
This point was invented by referencing the ultimate move of this world's protagonist—the upgraded version of that Rasengan he played with until the grand finale: the Wind Style: Rasenshuriken.
Of course, it was still far from having S-rank power. Although Ye Yuexin had already mastered both the nature transformation and shape transformation of wind, it still wasn't pure enough, and the amount of chakra he could control was relatively small.
Furthermore, because the flying knives were quite small, it was even harder to execute.
It was while learning Void Shatterer that Ye Yuexin took Hui Yeteng as his master.
The reason was fear of death. That's right. He clearly remembered the injuries Uzumaki Naruto sustained while training the Rasenshuriken.
He didn't have the constitution of a cockroach, nor did he possess Uzumaki Naruto's recovery speed.
Therefore, this move had to be performed using Shadow Clones. Otherwise, any slight accident would likely result in missing limbs or paralysis.
At the time, among the people Ye Yuexin knew, only this teacher had the potential to teach him this B-rank ninjutsu.
After demonstrating his talent, he learned the Shadow Clone technique during that period, and the bond between teacher and student at the academy began then as well.
This move had no requirements for the flying knife itself, because no matter the material, it would turn into flying ash once the knife was thrown and made contact with an object. The difficulty of compressing the tearing, flowing wind-attribute chakra to the thinness of a flying knife could be imagined.
Ye Yuexin didn't know if he was a genius, but regardless, he spent a year and a half cultivating the third blade.
There were many reasons for this, but the biggest one was likely a lack of chakra. He would run out of chakra after only a short while of training. This was a very chakra-intensive move.
