Donnie didn't have any grand dreams. While others meticulously planned their life's grand ambitions, Donnie just wanted to be a truck driver and, one day, own his own truck. After graduating from university, he joined a transport company. After two years of traveling back and forth, he finally saved up some money and took out a loan to buy his own small truck. Donnie named it Optimus Prime.
This was met with laughter from his colleagues.
"Oh, Donnie's gone crazy, he's calling his new truck Optimus Prime!"
"If a minivan is Optimus Prime, then when you buy a big truck in a few years, will you call it Unicron?"
"From today on, my ride is called Megatron."
People laughed and chattered, each offering their own opinions on Donnie's actions.
Donnie, unconvinced, explained to his colleagues that although it was his first vehicle, he would be driving it for a long time. Even when he bought a new car in the future, he would still call it Optimus Prime. It was a sentiment, something others wouldn't understand, but he did.
His colleagues were dismissive. Many asked him what this sentiment was. Was it a childhood Transformers sentiment? Donnie never answered. When pressed, he would just nod or shake his head. So, his colleagues continued to tease him periodically, using it as idle conversation.
At first, Donnie would try to explain and argue, but he was always asked about his "sentiment." After a while, he simply stopped explaining. He knew his colleagues meant no harm; they were just talking and laughing. Donnie didn't argue, just listened with a smile. Gradually, his colleagues stopped bringing it up, tirelessly searching for new topics.
Another day began. As usual, Donnie set aside some time for maintenance and cleaning, a ritual he never missed. He stubbornly believed that an excellent driver should regard their vehicle as a comrade-in-arms, sharing the same journey, rather than just an ordinary tool.
Opening the door, starting the engine, Donnie set off on the road with a truck full of fresh fruit. To keep the fruit fresh and because this delivery was urgent, Donnie was driving faster than usual. By the time he sensed something was wrong, it was too late. A speeding luxury car from the side hurtled towards him, violently crashing into the driver's door of Optimus Prime. It was a wreck.
In Donnie's last fleeting glance, he saw the other driver's flushed face and drunken eyes.
This is a young man, definitely drunk. I won't have to pay for his luxury car, Donnie thought. Then he regretted the severe damage to his beloved truck, fearing it would be impossible to repair completely, and even if repaired, many parts would need replacing, making it no longer the original one.
His consciousness gradually faded, and everything in Donnie's vision blurred. His ears buzzed. He could no longer hear the screams and shouts of the passersby.
Evening news: "At 3:07 PM today, a car accident occurred on Sunshine Avenue, resulting in one fatality. The perpetrator has been apprehended by the police. Citizens are reminded to be mindful of traffic safety when traveling." the anchor said.
When he opened his eyes again, he was in a completely unfamiliar environment, surrounded by unfamiliar faces and unfamiliar relatives. His parents gently picked up the newborn him, cooing and doting on him with great affection. Donnie stared, his eyes rolling around, taking in this novel experience.
This was a new world, with the legendary deeds of Captain America, and cities like Gotham and Metropolis. After the initial shock, Donnie quickly calmed down. His most prominent personality trait was his adaptability. What will be, will be. Thinking too much is useless.
In this life, his family was also in the transportation business. They lived frugly, saving a lot of money through hard work. In the super-metropolis of New York, if you were willing to work hard and endure hardship, there were many opportunities to earn money. They took out a loan in New York for a down payment on a small apartment. It was a very small apartment, but it was enough to shelter them from the wind and rain. It was cramped but cozy.
Donnie grew up in this new city and family, not wealthy, but warm enough, which made him very content and even more appreciative.
Until the family of three was loading up their truck to go on a transport run again, and Donnie specifically came to help.
"What are you doing here, you rascal? Your old man is still strong!"
Donnie laughed, "I think you're not as strong as me anymore. I've been working out all this time!" He struck a bodybuilder's pose, drawing a laugh and a scolding from his father and a light chuckle from his mother.
But tragedy struck suddenly, without warning.
It was a sudden disaster. Countless cries and monstrous roars shattered all peace.
A colossal figure suddenly appeared nearby, flipping over the small truck that Donnie and his parents relied on, as if casually kicking over a toy blocking its path.
Everything went dark. The colorful world instantly turned blood red.
His head hurt...
Vaguely, he heard countless piercing screams and cries, and it seemed like the sound of gunfire and cannons.
In his daze, Donnie felt someone violently slapping his face, roaring something into his ear. Donnie struggled to open his eyes, a minute movement that seemed to take all his strength.
"...Wake up, hey! If you lie down here, you're dead... Kid, get up if you don't want to die!"
Donnie's eyes widened, and he looked at the stranger in front of him with some confusion, then turned his gaze to the familiar yet unfamiliar surroundings.
"I'm not dead yet...?" Donnie murmured softly.
"If you don't run for your life, you'll really die! Those two monsters won't spare you just because you're injured! Get up, run!" the man yelled, shaking his head desperately.
"Run!" someone else ran past them, shouting at them, but after a few steps, they were crushed by a large rock, their body shattering and blood splattering everywhere.
Donnie's face turned pale, his mind reeling. It was unimaginable for city dwellers living in peaceful environments to experience such shock. After all, many people felt nauseous watching a violent movie, let alone watching a person being smashed to pieces right before their eyes.
The occasional monstrous roars stimulated Donnie's nerves, warning him that this was an extremely dangerous area. People were running around in panic everywhere. Debris from various buildings, signs, and more were scattered on the ground. Many vehicles had collided, and some had overturned. It was clear that it would take a long time to clear them, creating a scene of apocalypse.
The man managed to pull Donnie up.
"What's going on?" Donnie asked. He tried to turn his head to see how his parents were, but failed. He was severely injured, his face covered in blood.
His heart was filled with panic, feeling that something important had left him forever.
"Two monsters are fighting," the man said. "Monsters that appeared from nowhere. Many people have died."
Donnie felt like he was going crazy, and everyone else was too.
With a loud bang, a colossal figure fell in front of them, cracking the ground and kicking up clouds of dust, along with a large amount of small stones that flew in all directions, hitting Donnie and causing immense pain.
The night was dim, and visibility was slightly impaired. He could only vaguely see a colossal figure, about three to five meters tall. He heard a roar, and the monster tilted its head back and howled at the sky.
Donnie's eyes widened. He clearly heard the monster roaring "Hulk" nearby!
It was Hulk!
Donnie's eyes gradually reddened, bloodshot.
"Damn it!"
The man beside him was also terrified, his body trembling, shaking with fear.
"You run, don't worry about me!" Donnie said quickly. "My family is still in the car, I have to save them!" He trembled, filled with fear. He was afraid of losing everything. He was afraid that terrible thought would become reality.
The man's face was ashen, and he remained silent, stubbornly pulling at Donnie, trying to rescue him. Ignoring Donnie's cries, he hoisted him up and turned around, shuffling forward step by step. This was a middle-aged uncle, with bloodstains on his face. Despite his fear, he remained steadfast, refusing to let go no matter how much Donnie yelled.
He had already checked the other two people in the truck; there was no saving them.
The once bustling city was now a ruin, with skyscrapers in disrepair and cars scattered haphazardly. Many people hid beneath vehicles, trembling and praying for divine favor. In the distance, indistinct figures of the military and civilians mingled, afraid to approach. Armed helicopters circled cautiously in the sky, unwilling to get too close. The surviving streetlights flickered along the roadside, seemingly trying to cast their last light in the chaos. This indeed offered a small, insignificant comfort to the survivors. Under this faint glow, Donnie and the uncle moved with difficulty but unwavering determination.
The Hulk roared, pounding his own head as if trying to clear his mind, too preoccupied to notice the insignificant insects before him, giving Donnie and the uncle time to escape.
But time was ultimately not enough. Donnie was too severely injured, and the middle-aged uncle was too exhausted.
A similarly massive figure, though its body color was dimmer, instantly leaped from the intersection to a spot not far from them, confronting the Hulk and roaring, "Hulk! I'm stronger than you now!"
Donnie felt as if he had fallen into an ice cave, an bone-chilling coldness rushing from his feet straight to the crown of his head.
Abomination! Another monster!
The middle-aged uncle beside him became surprisingly calm and said to Donnie, "These are two villains, monsters! They destroyed everything, they'll definitely go to hell."
Donnie looked at his family's small truck overturned by the roadside. Without time to wipe away tears that had fallen at some unknown moment, he pointed at it and shouted, "Go there! Even if I die, I want to die with my family! I can't lose them!"
