Donnie's house was lively at the moment.
Several cars were parked at the entrance, and many men in black suits were coming and going from his house, carrying various documents.
S.H.I.E.L.D. Director Nick Fury was currently working inside Donnie's house with his team, attracting the curious stares of the neighbors.
Donnie was stunned speechless when he drove up to his doorstep and saw the scene. This was his house, where did all these people come from?! It was clear they didn't consider his house their own, treating them all like family.
The old bartender lay outside, leisurely sipping his wine, looking content.
Donnie dragged the glasses man over and demanded to know what was going on.
"I asked you to watch the door, and you're telling me you let the wolves in?!" Donnie suppressed his anger.
The old bartender looked up, his drunken eyes instantly blinded: "Whoa, you got a new haircut? It looks great!"
Donnie kicked him unconscious. He was most sensitive about compliments on his hairstyle. With a dark expression, he warned Pietro, who was laughing, that if he said anything, he'd beat him up like the old bartender.
Pietro instinctively crossed his arms and tilted his head, looking at people askance, which was very annoying. He sneered, still bothered by his defeat at Donnie's hands. He felt Donnie had been too opportunistic, and in a normal fight, it wouldn't have been so crazy; he nearly blew himself up while killing the enemy.
Donnie said, "If we're really going to fight, why worry about ridiculous tactics? Whatever can kill you is the best tactic. When the enemy knows they can't do anything to you, the best tactic is to go down with them. If I die, you won't live alone."
Pietro was arrogant and never liked listening to others ramble. He always believed his choices were correct. However, he did take some of Donnie's words to heart, only some.
To be honest, Pietro looked at Donnie with a bit of apprehension. He was genuinely scared by Donnie's "suicidal" attack. He wasn't injured, but Donnie himself was quite hurt. But Donnie really dared to go through with it; he was too ruthless, truly crazy enough to attack himself.
Unknowingly, Pietro developed a trace of awe for Donnie. This was a true warrior, daring to strike so fiercely...
Donnie's expression was grim. He walked straight into the house, forcefully pushing aside a few people who tried to stop him, heading directly inside.
Nick Fury sat calmly on the sofa, processing a pile of documents with fluid movements, issuing commands to his subordinates with an air of strategic command that was incredibly imposing. His remaining eye, unblinking, was fixed on the documents in his hand, as if the entire world consisted only of the papers waiting to be processed.
"One-Eyed Dragon? You're Nick Fury?! How dare you come into my house without my permission!" Donnie was furious, almost wanting to attack him directly. This house was his family's legacy, and he valued it greatly. He wouldn't allow anyone to damage or disturb it.
Nick Fury, the king of agents who had controlled S.H.I.E.L.D. for decades, was feared by countless people, striking terror into their hearts. He wore an eyepatch over one eye, observing people with his single eye, his gaze sharp. Combined with his tall stature and scarred face, he exuded an overwhelming pressure.
"I didn't come in without permission; your butler opened the door for me. Moreover, I've been waiting here for a full three hours! Three hours! Do you know how much I can get done in three hours!" Fury was calm. He knew Donnie would be displeased and had prepared a retort. Then he looked up, and his remaining eye went blind.
"Whoa, you got a new haircut? Looks great! But where did your eyebrows go?" Fury teased. Despite receiving the news, seeing him in person was still a shock to his eyes.
Donnie cursed loudly, developing a strong animosity towards Fury, the head of S.H.I.E.L.D.
Ugh!
Pietro reacted intensely. Seeing Director Fury's equally bald head, a black bald head at that, he was moved and promptly threw up again. He remembered the scenes from the battlefield, which had left some terrifying shadows in his mind.
This successfully provoked the director's hostility.
"Did you join the Brotherhood? Or the X-Men?" Fury asked. Having fought the Brotherhood for years, he recognized Pietro immediately, this ridiculously fast guy who had once given them a headache.
Donnie shook his head and said calmly, "I have no intention of joining either of them for now, so you don't need to worry."
Donnie took out a brick and, under the glasses man's terrified gaze, brought it down fiercely. It seemed the accumulated kinetic energy was sufficient, and this blow unusually landed a critical hit. The glasses man screamed and fainted.
The glasses man was desperate. He had been very well-behaved all along, fearing Donnie would find an excuse to deal with him, but he was still dealt with, and the process was so brutal.
"Alright, now we can talk seriously." Donnie's expression returned to normal. Dealing with Fury, the head of S.H.I.E.L.D., was undoubtedly a very troublesome matter.
Pietro finished spitting, casually wiped his mouth, said hello, and ran out. He was hungry and went to get something to eat.
"Is that kid going to follow you from now on?" Fury asked.
Donnie shamelessly nodded in acknowledgment, saying Quicksilver would follow him from now on.
Fury didn't comment but felt a bit envious. It was too difficult for official organizations like theirs to recruit powerful superhumans. Many people kept their distance just hearing about their origins; not fighting them was already a good thing.
"Let's talk about business. I'm here to see you about something important." Fury pulled out a thick stack of documents from the pile and handed it to Donnie, signaling him to look. "I'm assembling a special team and want to invite you to join us."
Fury told him that this team was specifically for dealing with supernatural crises. The team members could be considered semi-off-book personnel with high autonomy. When not busy, they could act freely. S.H.I.E.L.D. would not only refrain from interfering but also provide them with conveniences, such as various identification documents.
"'Semi-off-book personnel' is a good term, a versatile, vague designation. You can interpret it however you want later," Donnie said sarcastically, mocking Fury for playing word games at this point.
"If you don't join the X-Men or the Brotherhood, we are your best choice. We absolutely won't interfere with your private life. You should know that some people are always wary of you, especially since you live in New York City and need some form of restriction."
"A restriction on paper? Do they really think that if I sign a piece of toilet paper, my fate will be dictated by what's written on it? Tearing up agreements is what those politicians love to do the most. In their eyes, that agreement is probably worse than toilet paper."
"At least it can put their minds at ease. If you accept, it can at least convey to them that you are someone they can communicate with. Once we start, we can discuss things slowly. Aren't you going to deal with vampires? We can completely dispatch agents or help you contact a group of excellent vampire hunters. You can have more helpers."
Fury persuaded him. He was eloquent and analyzed the pros and cons for Donnie. Some of his points were indeed reasonable. Even though Donnie knew S.H.I.E.L.D. was a big pitfall, he was somewhat tempted.
Wearing the guise of an official could indeed solve many unnecessary troubles. The New York Police Department had already listed him as a person of high concern. Almost every time he went out and encountered police, he would be stared at, which was very uncomfortable.
"Actually, we have a very troublesome matter on our hands right now and want to hire you to help. Even if you don't plan to join us, you should be willing to accept employment like a mercenary, right? Our reward is very generous." Fury proactively revealed his intentions, wanting to seize the opportunity to assign Donnie a task.
"You don't need to do this right away; you can wait for a while because the target has a stable job in one place. I want to hire you to approach a woman and gather information on her. She is a very beautiful woman. According to our investigation, she is very strange, and we haven't dared to alarm her, only listing her as a person of interest."
