Background

Liu Yuniang was originally Li Chengfeng’s sister-in-law. Before his transformation, she regarded him as timid, frivolous, and easily influenced—someone suited only to odd jobs or day labor, not dangerous pursuits such as mountain hunting. She nevertheless tended carefully to his head wound when he was injured. 1 4

Her circumstances were precarious. Liu Hong harassed her and later threatened that she must become his concubine and pay protection money; otherwise, she would face consequences. The threats left her frightened enough to break down in Li Chengfeng’s arms. 4 9 As Li Chengfeng began providing food through hunting, she stopped working outside when possible and planned how their game could be exchanged for grain, salt, cloth, and shoe soles. 5

After Liu Hong’s death and the removal of Liu Yong as a threat, Li Chengfeng formally asserted that Liu Yuniang was his wife when Steward Wei of the Zheng Estate sought to acquire her for Master Zheng. 15 28 29 Li Chengfeng later confessed that his former self had intended to sell her; Yuniang slapped him through tears and asked that they live honestly without hiding things from one another. 36
