The King Kai's Final Trial [A second update, obtained by risking life and limb to slack off]
King Kai stood before the four of them, his face clearly full of reluctance.
At first, he had thought Bubbles and Gregory could make these four back down in the face of difficulty. Even if they passed the tests, it should have taken them a while, right?
But in the end, in less than three days, all four of these guys had cleared them, so he had no choice but to come out.
With a sigh, King Kai grumbled helplessly, "It's so hard being me."
The next moment, King Kai suddenly covered his mouth, turned around, and tried to hold back his laughter. In the end, he still couldn't restrain himself and burst into loud laughter.
Several black lines dropped over the foreheads of Son Gohan and the other three. What was so funny about that?
Ahem, ahem.
King Kai turned back around, coughed lightly twice, and said, "Since you have already passed the first two tests I arranged, you are now qualified to become my students and train under me."
"First, your first task is to temper your bodies properly. This is crucial for the test I am going to give you next."
Son Goku, Raditz, and Piccolo all looked puzzled. They had no idea what King Kai was planning, or why they still had to temper their bodies.
Only Son Gohan knew that this meant King Kai was about to teach one of the two great secret techniques he had created—the Kaioken.
Anyone who had watched Dragon Balls knew about this secret technique. It was an incredibly powerful secret art created by North Kai himself, and also one of the overwhelming BUG-level abilities in the Dragon Balls world.
To put its function simply, it could multiply the strength, speed, attack power, and defense of one's body. As long as your body could withstand it, the multiplier could be raised without limit.
How could Son Gohan possibly miss out on such a BUG-like secret technique?
However, the more outstanding the advantage, the greater the inevitable flaw. The burden the Kaioken placed on the body was simply too terrifying.
Even Son Goku, whose body had been tempered and baptized by the ten-times gravity of King Kai's Planet, could only develop it to a four-times Kaioken before his body could no longer take it.
Even later on, after training under gravity and surviving life-or-death crises, Son Goku could only withstand a twenty-times Kaioken and did not dare raise it any further.
And after transforming into a Super Saiyan, Son Goku did not even dare use the Kaioken anymore. He had only been forced to use it during his fight with Pikkon in the movie version, and even then, he had not dared use too high a multiplier.
Even in the Super storyline, after Son Goku advanced to the realm of Super Saiyan Blue God, he only dared to activate the ten-times Kaioken.
During his battle with Jiren in the Tournament of Power, after being forced into using the twenty-times Kaioken, his body had nearly collapsed.
As for that hundred-times Kaioken, Son Gohan was not sure whether it existed in this space-time or not, but according to the principle of following Akira Toriyama as the main canon, it probably did not exist.
All these examples proved that the Kaioken was not something one could just use whenever one wanted. Even someone as powerful as the protagonist, Son Goku, did not dare use it recklessly.
Son Gohan even suspected that if not for the incomparably powerful protagonist halo around Son Goku, his body might not have been able to hold up after using it for the first time in his battle against Vegeta.
Even so, the Kaioken was a secret technique Son Gohan was determined to obtain, because it could be said to be one of the protagonist's must-have secret comeback techniques.
To be honest, ever since Son Gohan had transmigrated into this world, aside from the moment when he had first learned this was the Dragon Balls world and his heart had started racing, this was the second time.
Just then, a rumble suddenly came from the sky. Afterward, a large airborne transport plane appeared beside King Kai's Planet.
"Perfect timing. The things I ordered have arrived too."
King Kai was very satisfied when he saw the plane arrive. He stretched out his hand and waved, directing the plane to land.
Very soon, ten strong, tall, burly ogres with twin horns on their heads walked down from the plane. After opening the cargo hold, they continuously transported the objects loaded inside.
Son Gohan could tell at a glance that it was a huge pile of fitness equipment. And judging from the way those ogres moved them, every single one of them was using all the strength they had, their faces strained into all kinds of colors.
One had to know that the auras of these big ogres were completely different from those little ogres in Hell whose battle power had only been within a few hundred. Their battle power was at least close to a thousand, or even over a thousand.
Son Gohan also noticed that every ogre wore the same style of necklace around their necks. It seemed this was the reason they could ignore the ten-times gravity on King Kai's Planet.
With such formidable battle power, they still had to work so hard to move this equipment. From that alone, it was clear how terrifyingly heavy the equipment was.
As for the purpose of this equipment, anyone with even a normal level of intelligence could guess it. This was specialized equipment King Kai had arranged for them.
After the equipment was moved, the ten big ogres returned to the plane one by one with expressions of utmost awe, then quickly left King Kai's Planet.
"These are professional pieces of equipment I had custom-made for you over in Hell. Once I feel that you have trained your bodies to be strong enough, I will come teach you again."
As King Kai spoke, he walked over to an iron plate that was even larger than he was. After patting it, he yawned and left the place.
The four people in the field all had different expressions. Son Gohan himself did not really mind, because he understood North Kai's personality very well. He truly lived on the schedule of a retired middle-aged to elderly man.
Son Goku was the first to step forward. He grabbed a barbell already loaded with weights and tried to lift it. He had thought it would be very easy, but the moment he exerted strength, his expression changed slightly.
Son Gohan also stepped forward. He did not choose the biggest and heaviest ones, but instead chose a one-handed dumbbell.
With that reminder from earlier, Son Gohan used even greater strength to try to lift it, and discovered that this thing was truly terrifyingly heavy!
With Son Gohan's current physical strength, one punch from him could easily pierce through a steel plate measured in centimeters of thickness, and the weight he trained with was calculated in tons.
But this thing reminded him of the feeling from his previous life, when he, an otaku, had bought a dumbbell and tried lifting it for the first time.
Son Gohan lifted the dumbbell up before his eyes and observed it carefully. He found that the material of these dumbbells was pitch-black and granular. It was clearly not ordinary metal.
Moreover, on the uneven, grainy surface, there were some extremely strange patterns engraved. Looking at them, they seemed quite mysterious.
Mystic-side powers existed in the Dragon Balls world. At the very beginning, there were mysterious beings like Fortuneteller Baba, and out in the universe, there was even Babidi's clan, which had inherited mysterious evil spells.
So Son Gohan did not find this kind of thing strange. As long as it could help train his body, he would welcome as much of this stuff as possible.
Next, the four of them began using these things to temper their bodies. Among the four people here, every one of them had a deep obsession with becoming stronger. It could be said that all four of them were the type of training maniacs.
Just like that, the days passed one by one. North Kai finally welcomed his leisurely middle-aged-to-elderly routine. Aside from the occasional clanging of metal being a little noisy, everything was actually quite nice.
Until a month and a half later, when Bubbles came to his side...
