Background / History
Son Goku is the father of Son Gohan and husband of Chi-Chi. When Gohan recovers from a fever and unexpectedly asks to learn martial arts, Goku agrees to train him, pleased by his son’s newfound toughness and resolve 1.
Before Gohan’s own entry, Goku had previously attempted the Hyperbolic Time Chamber after defeating the old Piccolo. He fled in under an hour, unable to endure the chamber’s isolation and mental pressure 14. He later trains under King Kai and develops sufficient control to use fourfold Kaioken 40.
During the Cell conflict, Goku battles Cell directly despite having less energy, initially suppressing him through close-quarters experience and adaptive tactics. He uses Instant Transmission, Solar Flare, Kamehameha, a Senzu Bean, and Super Saiyan Third Stage in an attempt to overcome Cell’s evolving strength 238 239 240 241.
Goku faces Super Buu by first fighting in base form to assess the enemy’s strength and conserve stamina. He subsequently reveals Super Saiyan 3, whose explosive power suppresses Buu but whose extreme energy consumption becomes a decisive liability in a prolonged battle 326 327 329.
After the Buu conflict, Goku explains that he did not use the Dragon Balls to restore the Saiyan race or its planet. Instead, he chose to search for surviving Saiyan groups, believing that simply restoring the past would not resolve the race’s deeper problems 338.
Appearance
In his normal state, Goku has black hair and wears a Turtle School gi when preparing for battle 231 326.
- Super Saiyan — golden hair and eyebrows, teal eyes, and golden ki flames 125.
- Super Saiyan Third Stage / Power Mode — dramatically enlarged musculature, prioritizing raw strength 240.
- Super Saiyan 3 — greatly lengthened hair, vanished eyebrows, and an immense, violent aura 326 327.
- Super Saiyan God — adopts a divine transformation to battle Beerus 374.
Personality
Goku is driven by the enjoyment of combat and the desire to surpass himself. Even when Cell has a clear advantage, Goku continues fighting rather than retreating; Gohan describes him as caring more about enjoying the battle and improving than about victory or defeat alone 238 241.
He is confident in reading opponents and often tests their strength before committing to a higher transformation. This approach is partly strategic: fighting in base form minimizes stamina use and lets him determine how much power is required 326.
Outside battle, Goku can be simple-minded and awkward with domestic responsibilities. He struggles with caring for newborn Goten, but enjoys teaching martial arts to Son Fangfang and spending time with her 299.
Abilities & Skills
Martial Arts Mastery
Goku’s strongest asset is his combat experience. He can pressure stronger opponents through close-range exchanges, rapid adaptation, and an instinctive sense of an opponent’s intentions.
- Recognizes that Trunks has no killing intent and trusts him to stop his blade before it reaches him 173.
- Uses close-quarters skill to suppress Cell despite Cell’s greater energy 238.
- Continues adapting his tactics even while severely injured by Cell 242.
Ki Manipulation
Goku can conceal, unleash, and shape ki for offense, movement, and defense.
- Uses Kamehameha against Cell and Super Buu 238 327.
- Uses Solar Flare to blind Cell 238.
- Can condense ki around a single finger strongly enough to block Trunks’s sword 173.
- Limits his ki output during battle to reduce damage to the surrounding planet, though this restraint can be exploited 327.
Kaioken
A high-strain amplification technique marked by a crimson aura.
- Can activate Double Kaioken suddenly in close combat 39.
- Later demonstrates fourfold Kaioken 40.
- Fourfold Kaioken has a considerable physical burden, making it inferior to Super Saiyan’s greater multiplier for sustained combat 110.
Instant Transmission
Goku uses Instant Transmission to reposition instantly in combat.
- Evades Cell’s Final Flash through teleportation, though Cell anticipates his destination 238.
- Employs the technique as part of his tactical exchanges with Cell 239.
Super Saiyan Transformations
Goku possesses several Saiyan transformations, using them progressively to gauge opponents and manage stamina.
- Super Saiyan provides a major power increase but initially imposes substantial stamina and mental strain 125 127.
- Super Saiyan Third Stage / Power Mode greatly increases strength but enlarges his body and is used as a situational breakthrough against Cell 240.
- Super Saiyan 3 provides immense speed and explosive power but rapidly drains stamina and ki 326 327 329.
- Super Saiyan God grants divine power, though Goku must rapidly learn to control it during his battle with Beerus 374 375.
Equipment / Items
- Turtle School gi — Goku’s preferred battle clothing 231.
- Senzu Beans — used to restore his depleted ki during his fight with Cell and later to replenish himself against Beo 239 329.

- Chi-Chi — wife. Their family life is strained by Goku’s discomfort with childcare, though Chi-Chi encourages him to spend time outside with Son Fangfang 299.
- Son Goten — newborn son; Goku struggles with the responsibilities of caring for him 299.
- Son Fangfang — daughter whom Goku takes out for martial-arts practice and recreation 299.
- Vegeta — longtime rival and ally. Their rivalry remains competitive, but they spar together after the Buu conflict and recognize each other’s strength 324 341.
- Trunks — future ally who tests Goku with a sword strike, then places his trust in both Goku and Gohan after witnessing Goku’s strength 173.
- Cell — opponent in an extended battle that forces Goku to rely on strategy, transformations, and endurance 238 239 240 241 242.
- Super Buu — opponent against whom Goku unveils Super Saiyan 3 326 327.
- Beerus — God of Destruction whom Goku challenges as a Super Saiyan God 374.
