Background

Creation and purpose

Cell was one of Dr. Gero's earliest android projects. He was created by gathering the cells and energy traits of Earth's strongest fighters, combining their strengths into a life-form intended to surpass ordinary androids. He considers Androids 17 and 18 “nutrients” rather than equals, initially requiring their absorption to reach perfection. 207

His composition includes energy associated with Son Goku, Piccolo, Vegeta, Frieza, King Cold, and other powerful fighters. This gives Cell a mixture of Saiyan growth potential, Namekian regeneration, and a broad library of combat techniques. 207 219

Early emergence

Cell awakens far ahead of schedule in a juvenile state aboard a Kestosto research vessel. After escaping his cultivation tank, he slaughters the researchers and begins absorbing life-forms to grow stronger. 166

He rapidly learns to suppress his aura and conceal signs of life, allowing him to infiltrate warships and kill entire crews without immediate detection. 167 Son Gohan first identifies him after finding animals reduced to dried corpses and ash through Cell's absorption. 186

Two Cells

Two versions of Cell operate in the timeline:

• Modern Cell — the present-era Cell, who matures and emerges prematurely. He is killed twice by Gohan before returning through his survival measures. 201
• Future Cell — a Cell from a future timeline who killed that timeline's Trunks and used his Time Machine to enter the present. 201 233

The two initially cooperate, with Modern Cell offering to help Future Cell obtain Androids 16, 17, and 18. Modern Cell's actual advantage is that his modified program has freed him from the strict requirement of absorbing 17 and 18; he can evolve through enough equivalent energy instead. 208 214

Pursuit of stronger forms
