In truth, when he saw that smiling-face symbol in the shelter within Limbo and began considering why it might be there, the first thing that came to mind was a Christmas gift he had once received—
A mirror.
That Christmas gift had been sent to him by Selina Pendragon on behalf of Gellert Grindelwald. She had also stuffed a card packed full of writing into the parcel.
The contents of the card were rather interesting, very much in Selina Pendragon's style:
[Happy Christmas! I'm saying this on Grindelwald's behalf. He only said he wanted to give you a mirror as a gift.]
[That's right! I thought you'd definitely examine it out of habit, but I've already examined it for you. It's just an ordinary mirror. I checked several times and confirmed that this was what he meant.]
[After all, that's exactly what Grindelwald said. He told me to send you an ordinary mirror, and I checked several times to make sure that was really what he meant.]
[The reason he gave was strange. Anyway, it made me feel as though he knew you very well...]
[But all the information you and he could possibly know about each other was passed through me. How could I possibly not know something like that?]
[Anyway, what he meant was that if he gave you something too expensive, you'd probably feel awkward about it. I think that makes sense, but I'd feel embarrassed just sending an ordinary mirror too.]
