Background / History
Early career and Tom Riddle
In the summer of 1937, Dumbledore visited a London orphanage as a Hogwarts professor to offer Tom Marvolo Riddle a place at Hogwarts. He recognized Tom's unusual ability to deliberately control wandless magic and learned that he used it to frighten and harm other children. 127 1412 1414
Dumbledore attempted to establish authority by setting fire to and restoring the cupboard where Tom hid stolen objects, then requiring him to return them before attending Hogwarts. He later regretted handling the meeting through suspicion and intimidation, believing his wariness may have reinforced Tom's cruel nature. 127 1415
He later refused both of Voldemort's applications to teach at Hogwarts. Although he recognized Voldemort's ambition and dangerous transformation, he did not yet understand the full purpose behind Voldemort's desire to return to the castle. 1417
He also considers his delayed confrontation with Gellert Grindelwald a grave personal failure, accepting that innocent people died while he postponed facing him. 1656
Headmaster of Hogwarts
As Hogwarts headmaster, Dumbledore intervened when Wizet Lovegood lost control of his Obscurus. He stalled the responding wizards, helped Wizet safely reabsorb the Obscurus, arranged treatment at St. Mungo's, and insisted that Wizet be allowed to study at Hogwarts. 2
To protect Wizet from the dark wizard connected to his past, Dumbledore concealed the boy's identity until Xenophilius Lovegood completed the formalities for the Lovegood surname. 23
Dumbledore treats Hogwarts as both a school and a refuge. He values students developing an individual understanding of magic based on their souls rather than merely copying a professor's methods. 74
During the Ministry's campaign against Hogwarts during the Chamber of Secrets crisis, Dumbledore allowed his opponents' impatience to expose their manipulation. He intended his temporary departure under pressure to weaken pure-blood influence over the Board of Governors and solve several institutional problems at once. 364 377 378
International leadership and reform
As President of the International Confederation of Wizards, Dumbledore has increasingly addressed the relationship between wizarding and Muggle societies. He researches the origins and political consequences of the International Statute of Secrecy while acknowledging that the rapidly changing Muggle world requires wizards to adapt. 915 981
He advocates international cooperation in response to Dark wizards using Muggle firearms, explosives, and modified weaponry. After presenting Wizet's defensive spell to international officials, he distributed its principles for wider adoption and left its formal name to an international vote. 1592 1593 1597
Dumbledore has also supported educational reforms intended to prepare young wizards for the changing world, including practical Disarming Charm instruction, examination incentives, and an exchange program between magical and Muggle schools. 1344 1641
Appearance
Dumbledore is an elderly wizard with silver hair, a long silver beard that can be tucked into his belt, bright blue eyes behind glasses, and a preference for vivid formal robes. 1
- Wore a purple robe trimmed in gold when he first intervened in Wizet's Obscurus incident. 1
- His usual half-moon spectacles can be conjured with lenses formed from flowing water. 322
- In his youth, he wore a striking magenta velvet suit and kept his beard carefully groomed. 1411
- His elaborate robes vary widely in color and design, including pine-green, dark green, purplish-red, and star-decorated formal attire. 74 1365 1458
Personality
Dumbledore is patient, gentle, and attentive when guiding students. He encourages Wizet to understand his own soul and magical inclinations, praises genuine insight, and considers education a means of preventing gifted children from being consumed by dangerous power. 23 74 681
His warmth is tempered by calculation. He keeps Quirinus Quirrell close to monitor Voldemort, retains Gilderoy Lockhart as a practical lesson in discerning truth from fraud, and plans to draw out Voldemort's secrets through Barty Crouch Jr. without the latter realizing it. 216 217 722
Dumbledore carries intense guilt over Grindelwald, Voldemort, Ariana, and his relationship with Aberforth. He is confident with magical theory but deeply uncertain when family is involved, tending to assume responsibility for every failure. 127 1656 1701
Despite this guilt, he is capable of decisive manipulation when lives or institutions are at stake. He uses opponents' impatience, public perception, and even enemy surveillance to shape events in favor of Hogwarts and the wider magical world. 364 1596 1742
He remains willing to sacrifice himself to protect others. During the Battle of Hogwarts, he prepared to block Voldemort's devastating attack despite knowing that he was exhausted and might not survive. 1964
Abilities & Skills
Transfiguration
Dumbledore possesses exceptional Transfiguration skill and teaches it as a process of understanding an object's nature while imposing the caster's will.
- Repaired the ruined house surrounding Wizet's Obscurus incident. 2
- Created a route through the sea by raising two walls of water after a Transfigured bridge proved unsuitable. 681
- Transfigured discarded sweet packaging into an owl to carry it away. 1307
- Guided Wizet's understanding that Transfiguration requires harmony with, as well as struggle against, the object being changed. 681
- Creates animated armor and defensive statues, including frost-forged armor capable of intercepting Killing Curses. 118 1058
- Transfigured dust into a stone statue quickly enough to block Voldemort's Killing Curse during the Battle of Hogwarts. 1944
Patronus and Soul Magic
Dumbledore understands magic as an expression of the soul and is highly skilled with corporeal Patronuses.
- As a young wizard, he cast a silver phoenix Patronus and altered its form into a reindeer, bear, cat, horse, dolphin, and wolf to attack a Dementor in different ways. 784
- Uses memories and soul-based analysis to guide Wizet's magical development. 74 783
- Identified Wizet's Obscurus as evidence that his soul and talents incline toward Transfiguration. 74

- Used his Patronus to save Harry, Sirius Black, Ron Weasley, and Hermione Granger from werewolves and Dementors. 600
- Can manifest a powerful “Soul Power” field: a silent, colorless, contradictory world of heat and ice that attempts to assimilate opposing soul power. 1423
Animagus Transformation
Dumbledore can transform into a phoenix Animagus, drawing upon his powerful bond with Fawkes.
- The transformation grants him flight and the phoenix's ability to dissolve into flame and re-form elsewhere. 1946
- He used this form to evade Voldemort's Fiendfyre constructs during the Battle of Hogwarts. 1946
Defensive and Dark Magic
Dumbledore is capable of using Dark Magic defensively without adopting Voldemort's aims.
- Disrupted Voldemort's Dark Mark broadcast using a spellcasting technique invented by Voldemort himself. 1044
- Evaded Killing Curses with protective magic, an animated Angel Statue, mist, and transfigured defenses while duelling Voldemort. 1044 1058
- Contained Voldemort's Fiendfyre alone, then shaped it into a fiery prison that temporarily restrained and weakened Voldemort. 1048
- Cast a massive Salvio Hexia barrier that shielded the Centaurs from a concentrated barrage of dark-wizard spells during the Battle of Hogwarts. 1944
- Generated a large spherical magical energy field to contain several of Voldemort's crimson meteors, sustaining severe exhaustion while protecting the battlefield below. 1960
Magical Research
Dumbledore researches obscure fields of magic, especially souls, artifacts, rituals, and the relationship between magic and belief.
- Co-authored theoretical notes with Gellert Grindelwald on the Eye of Heaven and related magical traces. 75
- Studied the Ministry of Magic's history, political power structures, and the International Statute of Secrecy. 980 981
- Investigated the Deathly Hallows, identifying the Elder Wand as a coordinate connected to Limbo. 1687 1689
- Entered Limbo and sought Wizet's help to explore it further through their phoenix connection. 1689
- Concluded that the Elder Wand, Resurrection Stone, and Cloak of Invisibility share structural similarities with Limbo, and collaborated with Wizet to investigate their deeper origin. 1688 1690
- Developed the Deluminator using principles related to the Pensieve and Soul Power. 1425 1426
Strategy and Diplomacy
Dumbledore combines long-term planning with international influence.
- Monitored Quirrell because his trip to Albania and the Gringotts break-in suggested Voldemort's return. 216
- Proposed using Barty Crouch Jr. to reveal Voldemort's secrets unknowingly. 722
- Coordinated international responses to Muggle firearms by promoting a new defensive spell invented by Wizet. 1593 1597
- Publicly supported practical instruction in the Disarming Charm and linked proficiency to additional O.W.L. and N.E.W.T. marks. 1641
- Used Ministry pressure and the Board of Governors' impatience to undermine pure-blood control of Hogwarts. 364 1013
- Used Calchas's Eye of Heaven surveillance as a source of misdirection, allowing enemies to overestimate how directly he controlled Wizet's actions. 1736 1737
- Proposed using Hufflepuff's Cup to lure Voldemort toward Gringotts and compel the goblins to take responsibility for the resulting crisis. 1742
